Glam September 2, 1947 - Seventy-eight Freshmen entered the portals of Pal- myra High for the first time. During the ensuing four years 21 members have left our ranks for marriage, the armed forces or jobs but we added eight more mem- bers to our group. Beginning our freshman year we participated in all of the usual school events, freshman initiation and parties and then our sophomore year we had our change for retaliation. These two years passed and we had our share of honor. Then our Junior year we began to accomplish bigger and better things. In the fall we gave our Junior Play, Faith, Hope and Flarity and breathed a real sigh of relief as the final curtain fell. In the spring we entertained the seniors with an Evening at the Circus? Prom. Music for dancing was furnished by Carl Landrum's Orches- tra. lt was a gala evening with every one looking their best in white shirts and beautiful formals. On Sept. 11, sixty-five seniors started their final year in Palmyra High. We were the largest Senior class in the history of Palmyra High. We elected as our officers-Oney Shade, Presidentg Jane Yarborough, vice- presidentg Marjorie Million, secretary, Catherine Bode, treasurerg and Teresa Shade as our reporter. Our sponsors are Joe Dull and Margaret Maize. The Seachlight was our biggest task of the year and as soon as classes were organized we elected Edna Barber as our Editor in Chief. The book was financed by sales, advertising and various money making activities. Of course we are all looking forward to Baccalaureate and Commencement. Our class has been prominent in leadership, loyalty, and school spirit and have proven themselves in every way to be fit and fine citizens of the community. We leave our school with many fine memories and many fine friends. We want to take this space to wish the classes that follow our steps all the success and happiness possible. Palmyra came back to score their first touchdown from the 33-yard line by Shade. Palmyra lost possession of the ball on the 8-yard line and Macon failed to make the necessary yardage, and was caught behind the goal for a safety giving Palmyra an 8 to 6 lead. Again the Panthers scored with Feaster carry- ing the ball for a 66-yard run, ending the game with a score of 14 to 6. The Panthers edged a victory over Louisi- ana Bulldogs by a victory of 6 to 0, and spoiled another Homecoming. The touchdown was made by Shade carrying the ball from the 3- yard line. The next game was the Mighty Panthers Homecoming, which was played with Mc- Cooey Shamrocks. We defeated McCooey 12 to 0 for the first place title of the Quint City Conference. Palmyra came back to score in the second quarter with Los- son carrying over from the 2-yard line, and Shade went over for the extra point, tying the score 7 to 7, which it remained until the third quarter. just after the half St. Peters marched 80 yards for another touchdown and later scored again from an intercepted pass. With only five minutes remaining in the game, Los- son scored again and Shade made the extra point good. Two plays later Losson faked an end run and threw a 27-yard pass to Shade, tying the score 20 to 20. Due to interference by spectators Palmyra was called back and the second time failed to make the extra point. Palmyra Kiwanis Club sponsored a Flow- er Bowl game that was played at Palmyra be- tween the winner of the NEMO Conference which was Moberly and the Quint City Con- ference which was Palmyra. The game was played in near zero weather in a two-inch snow that had fallen the night before. Mober- ly won the game 20 to 6, with Shade making the only touchdown for Palmyra. This was a night everyone will remember, for even the spectators almost froze, and we know it was a great sacrifice for our boys to continue to play in such Weather, and we would like to tip our hats to them for doing it. We started the season with little practice, because of the Flower Bowl Came, but a lot of spirit. We got off to a good start beating Shelbina and Lewistown. In the Monroe City Tournament we lost a good game to Shelbyville, who went on to tie for first. We lost the Consolation Championship in a close game to Madison after we heat Holy Rosary. ln our own tournament we ruled over Phil-Emerson, but lost a good game to Edina who went on to take the tourmanent. VVe used set shots till they came out to get us then we broke into their middle. On defense we used a very effective zone. On February 14 we went to La Plata to play in their tournament. VVe stayed tl1e week losing to Ewing the first night, then winning two games Friday, one from fluntsville and one from llurdland. Saturday afternoon we romped Shelhina to win the Consolation Trophy. The 1950-51 basketball season started out with 33 girls going out and about 10 being dropped after several days. We started the season out very successfully under the good leaderhip of Mr. Morse. We entered the Monroe City Tournament on December 5, 1950. We lost our first game to lloly Rosary but went on to beat LaGrange and Lewistown to win Consolation. Then the supreme event of the year, A'The Palmyra Tournament. VVe won over llasco and Edina, but lost to LaP1ata by a very close score. VVe won our last game from Center taking third place in the tournament. It was a wonderful experience for the girls to play in the LaPlata Tourna- ment from February 13 to 17. We won our first game over Novelty, but lost to Memphis the second. VVe had a very pleasant time during our stay there, even if the weather was bad. The graduating players would like to wish The Best of Luck to the play- ers of the coming year and also to thank our coach, Mr. Morse, for his loyalty in helping us through a successful basketball season. The Palmyra girls were hostess for the sub- district F. H. A. meeting this year and planned a day to be remembered a long time for the girls from the visiting schools. This year the club had a bake sale and sold Christmas cards, and ran the lunch stand at the Tournament as money-making projects. We also ran the stand at the Thanksgiving Bowl game and served the Homecoming Foot- ball banquet for football boys and alumni. The biggest responsibility of the year was the Tour- nament and we found when the smoke had cleared away that we had made about 3500. The annual Formal dance was held dur- ing the Christmas holidays and amidst holiday decorations everyone danced to the music of the Blue Notes. Plans have been made for the annual Mother-Daughter, Father-Son banquet to be held in March. The F. H. A. had the largest enrollment so far in the history of the Palmyra Chapter. In September the enrollment for the year of 1950- 51, was 85. Of this number twenty-eight were new members. These were initiated at the September meeting to which all of the moth- ers were invited. Preceding the initiation a cov- ered dish supper was held. At this meeting, two more club mothers were selected to help Mrs. Shade. They were Mrs. Leo Briss and Mrs. Boy Courtright. The same night the new officers were installed by the out-going of- ficers. 4. 67. 74. -vnqtriill i ws-we 5 . If manila e , , A. ' -'MS . Y E . if . R . 1 X ' Ls . can ,... W.. SUMMARY With the organization of a club as the first order of business, the Library staff started the 1950-51 season with enthusiasm. Working with the efficiency of a well-trained football team, we began the re-classification of the books. It was necessary to close the library for four days before Christmas vacation to get the fiction books in order. Although we have had only our party, a slum party, we are planning sev- eral more this year. We are sponsoring book reviews to be given by townspeople and for the benefit of any student who is interested in reading. Mr. G. W. Cummings and Mr. Bob Lemons donated books from their own personal libraries, and the school bought several new books for the library.
