f W --r' W-vu-W-'--W f--- -' Q! THE PALM ECHO THE SENIOR CLASS of PALMYRA HIGH SCHCOL, PALMYRA, PA. Volume V 1955 All activities of the school year are symbolized by the seasons: fall, winter, and spring. Fall suggests the Junior High School struggling to make its place in a new realm of interests. Winter represents the season of intense activity, with the Sophomore and Junior classes in the midst of it. The coming of spring and a new season bring to the outside world an anticipation of a new group of graduates-Seniors everywhere striving to fulfill these expectations. May the Palm Echo preserve for the students of Palmyra High School photographic and written glimpses of these most cherished memories. ...- X 1 2 X D ,JM . 45 f ' i t 1 vis' ' A Q it i X4 ' Q Administration - Fall Winter Spring Dedication We the graduating class of 1955 dedicate this volume of the Palm Echo to Mr. Frank L. After losing three out of their first ten games they swept through twelve straight Lebanon County League games to win the ch-ampionship for the eighth time in the last ten years. The team continued their winning ways in the playoffs by defeating Lampeter-Strasburg, Camp Hill, and Kutztown, before finally losing in the District 3 Finals to Donegal. Coach Shupper's cagers finished the season with a brilliant record of twenty wins and four losses. Recognition for this outstanding achievement must be given to Coach Shupper for his magnificient coaching displayed throughout this basketball season. Since coming to Palmyra as basketball coach for the 'season of 1948-49, his teams have compiled a record of H4 wins and 33 losses. During these seven years his teams have won five Lebanon County Championships and have gone on to represent the league in District 3 competition. Christmas Christmas, the season of feverish activity for the Seniors who invaded the town selling wreaths, brought to our classrooms decorations of familiar yuletide symbols-fir trees, St. Nick, the stockings hung by the chimney with care. The white Christmas never made its appearance except in our songs. The climax of the season was the annual choral pageant which presented to the student body and visitors the true meaning and spirit of Christmas. 56 -' 1 1 'E l ' 'H I I ' 1 I 'Swing and Sway with Fridy 1 . Because this was some time ago, and we do not remem- ber some things too clearly, the exact facts and details of our rise are quite confused. This document will do noth- ing to clear up these facts. Our introduction to education was made by Miss Turby, Miss Bixler, and Miss Green. Miss Bixler believed in speaking loudly, and carrying a small stick-her ruler. After three months of wear and tear on our parents, we entered second grade. The teachers were Mrs. Baer, Miss Stalk, Mrs. Witmer. This was the year that some Mickey Mouse books were missing from Miss Staiks library. The investigation kept us in at recess and after school for three days. They gave us the third degree, but they never did turn up, even after she called in .lack Webb. The maiority of us were acquitted and we passed on into third grade. Here we were tutored by Miss Baum, Miss Moyer, and Miss Groff. At this time the stars shown upon our little group, for Gloria Hartman and Naomi Bashore joined us. ln fourth grade Miss Evans, Mrs. Heisey, and Miss lmboden led us in our learning. Miss Evans's room did a booming grocery business that term. By sneaking in the door we reached fifth grade, only to be plagued by Miss Seltzer, Mrs. Eby, and Mrs. Bom- berger. This was the year that Naomi Bashore challenged all the boys in her room to a fight on the Lutheran Church lawn. She whipped a good many of them, too. ln the spring of that year we hiked up to Hershey Park for a class picnic. We survived the long walk pretty well but our teachers couldn't hold up, so they had buses for the return trlp. Then came the year when we were the upperclassmen of the grade school. Our 6th grade teachers were Mrs. Long, Mrs. Gill, and Mrs. Wagner. Mrs. Long took her class to the Farm Show that winter, and though we didn't learn much about the rural life in Pennsylvania, we did have some good tag games in and out of the crowd. Onward to Junior High School, where we first came in contact with Mr. Swank's martial discipline. There was quite a fuss when somebody set off a stink bomb in Mrs. Wahl's seventh grade history class. Although they never did find the culprit, all the boys got a taste of Mr. Boldger's paddle and passed in review before the faculty. There was the time Thelma Rodgers beat up Glen Hitz for getting out of line. Now we came to our eighth year. We had terrific amateur hour shows in music class. Mrs. Cobello made Paul Hibschman sing solos because he wouldn't sing with the rest of the class. On into our Freshman year! Here we received our first tutoring from Mrs. Kreider. Although her room was No. ll6, some of us spent most of those classes next door in the office. lt was at this time that Naomi Bashore became famous for her sleigh bell solos which she played for the English class. With only 95 more shopping days until Christmas, we began our Sophomore year. About that time Lois Kreider and Jack Steckman began perfecting their methods of playing hookey. They both set new records for the most days absent. Speaking of setting records, one of our homerooms drove four teachers to distraction in one year. Onward we staggered into llth grade. This year Miss Adams, our English teacher, just happened to find a snake in her desk drawer. In chemistry class Johnny Gingrich made remarkable progress in the art of boiling water. There was the time we made chlorine gas and Scotty was nearly asphyxiated. Thus we come to the great climax, the culmination of our high school education-l2th grade. Ted Lerch finished up in a blaze of glory when he made his famous bicycle tour through the halls. We are looking forward to Baccalaureate Services, Commencement, and our exodus from Palmyra High School. We only hope that you whom we leave behind will hold for us the same happy memories that we have for you. 71 , C..-1!........ .. ,. ,.- ........!u-- V JH.. . . , Senior Class Officers Richard Moore labsentl, Janet Swartz, John Fridy, Thelma Rodgers. On May 22, 1955, the Baccalaureate service was held at the Palmyra High School Auditorium. The service was begun with the Processional by the Junior-Senior Orchestra, under the direction of An- thony J. Gerace. The Invocation by Rev. Warren E. Adams was followed by the Scripture by Rev. Joseph W. Schober and Prayer by Rev. Chester B. Starr. Selections by the Mixed Ensembles under the direction of Mrs. Phyllis Cobello preceded the sermon by Rev. Melvin E. Patrick. One Golden Moment was the title of Rev. Patrick's sermon. This theme pertained to the importance of the time of graduation. He left the graduating class with the thought that lite is filled with Golden Moments ot which graduation is only the beginning. Rev. Charles E. Chamberlain pronounced the Benediction after which the orchestra played the Recessional. 94 Commencement Row 1-Mary Ann Wenger, Mary Jane Mummau, Faye Smith, Carol Ford, Janet Hetrick, Gloria Hartman, Thelma Rodgers, Mildred Nelson. The fifty-third annual Commencement took place Thursday evening, May 26 at the Palmyra High School. While the graduating class of '55 was busily preparing to go on stage, the orchestra played several classical selections. The Invocation was given by Rev. Charles E. Chamberlain. Following the Invocation five senior boys played a trumpet march, The Armory. Philip Loveioy, world traveler and well known speaker, presented a grad- uation message entitled Make Way for Tomorrow. He brought out the question, What would you be if you could be anything you wanted to be? With this question as an illustration he indicated that in present times anyone can realize his ambitions if he shows certain qualities: intellectual inquisitiveness and ability to surmount obstacles. He also spelled the word success: S-simplicity, U-understanding,C-character,C-courage, E-endeav- or, S-sincerity, S-service. This message was forcefully given and full of inspiration. After Mr. Loveioy's talk a fine arrangement of Trees was sung by the Senior Girl's Ensemble. When the audience's applause ceased, the the big moment came. Mr. Hartz introduced Dr. Forney who presented the diplomas. After every senior had been recognized the Benediction was given by Rev. Chamberlain. lt's hard to realize, but some of the people who left the stage that night as the orchestra played would never see each other again. 95 '-W-1 ft Class Poem One day in '43, innocent, no more gleefully free, ,We embarked upon our school career, hopefully, expectantly All the answers we thought we knew, But as the days sped on our disillusionment grew. After the passage of six years, we entered Junior High, And O! the problems that we met as time flew quickly by! But the fun, the merry pranks, the happy harmonies Filled our stay at P. H. S. with happy memories. At the end of our first big adventure in life We pause, reflecting on the fun and strife That we've encountered along our way In those mad moments of each day. Yet we never can forget the happy days at P. H. S. For they are the foundation of our anticipated success. Carol Ford, Marilyn Kreider ' fi. ? u lylfsw..-m-as .an . .l...., L .
