colorado celebrates first hundred years As our nation celebrates its 200th birthday, Colorado will be celebrating its lOOth. Colorado became the 38th state in the Union on August 1, 1876. The state's name comes from the Spanish word for RED, given to the Colorado River, which originates within the state. Colorado is also known as the Silver State, for the silver mined in it, and the Switzerland of America, for its mountains and valleys. But most important, especially this year, Colorado is known as the Centennial State, because of its entrance into the Union a century after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Colorado has done its share in celebrating the centennial-bicentennial by manufacturing the new commemorative license plate and by setting up bicentennial headquarters buildings throughout the state. ,fvf'-'-QX s PEAK OR BusT'ByX7 ,if HEADQUARTERS 6 X ,f 16

palmer hosts six exchange students This year Palmer had the pleasure of hosting a group of six foreign exchange students from a variety of places including Japan, South America, Central America, and Europe. These students experienced our American culture and lifestyle, and usually found it to be somewhat different from their own cultures. It was a unique and rewarding learning ex- perience for all involved, and the exchange students proved to be a big credit to Palmer. The Youth for Understanding, and International Fellowship Organizations each sponsored three of the students. They in- cluded Jorge Azevedo from Brazil, Jari Tuomala from Finland, Illona Sommerfeld from Germany, Martha Lugo and Patricia Carrada from Mex- ico, and Hisako Miyashita from Japan. Jocelyn Hays, a senior at Palmer, was an exchange stu- dent in Quito, Ecuador, with the Youth for Understanding program. Hisako Miyashita J ari Tuomala
