The student at Palmer is many things: an athlete, a per- former, a lover, a scholar, a clown, a slob, a cheerleader, a Chicano, a honky, a Black, a leader, a follower, a freak, a straight, and much, much more. Above all, the student at Palmer is an individual, with traits and characteristics unique to him or her self. Colorado became the 38th state in the Union on August 1, 1876. The state's name comes from the Spanish word for RED, given to the Colorado River, which originates within the state. Colorado is also known as the Silver State, for the silver mined in it, and the Switzerland of America, for its mountains and valleys. But most important, especially this year, Colorado is known as the Centennial State, because of its entrance into the Union a century after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Colorado has done its share in celebrating the centennial-bicentennial by manufacturing the new commemorative license plate and by setting up bicentennial headquarters buildings throughout the state. ,fvf'-'-QX s PEAK OR BusT'ByX7 ,if HEADQUARTERS 6 X ,f 16 7 ' S l si A m E A academics palmer hosts six exchange students This year Palmer had the pleasure of hosting a group of six foreign exchange students from a variety of places including Japan, South America, Central America, and Europe. These students experienced our American culture and lifestyle, and usually found it to be somewhat different from their own cultures. It was a unique and rewarding learning ex- perience for all involved, and the exchange students proved to be a big credit to Palmer. The Youth for Understanding, and International Fellowship Organizations each sponsored three of the students. They in- cluded Jorge Azevedo from Brazil, Jari Tuomala from Finland, Illona Sommerfeld from Germany, Martha Lugo and Patricia Carrada from Mex- ico, and Hisako Miyashita from Japan. Jocelyn Hays, a senior at Palmer, was an exchange stu- dent in Quito, Ecuador, with the Youth for Understanding program. Hisako Miyashita J ari Tuomala Mr. Tony Selfe geniuses set record on it's academic The phenomenal team of John Reinitz, Mike Marx, and Katy Sullivan went to Denver last October to appear on Channel Eleven's It's Academic high school quiz show. While there, they blew their opponents out of their seats with their rapidfire answers and their awesome display of knowledge. Together, they amassed a total score that set a record on the show and surpassed their closest competitors score by over 200 points. Unfortunately, when they returned to the show for the quarter-finals, they didn't do so well. Out of the kindness of their hearts, they let another team gain a sixty point lead. Before they could rally back, time had run out, a sad situation indeed. These three excellent students were chosen from a multitude of others who tried out for the show. They were selected because of their superior performances. These three mental giants were coached by that pair of intellectual prodigies, known to the student body as Tony Selfe and John Barber. The dispute was between members of the Colorado Springs Teachers Association and the Colorado Springs Board of Education. The CSTA members wanted an increase in their yearly and educational advancement in- crements. The School Board, spearheaded by Jack Wiman, refused their request because of a so-called shortage of money in the budget. The teachers went on strike as a result. As the strike went on, each side presented proposals to the other in an attempt at a settlement, but these were usually rejected by one party or the other. Difficulties arose when the School Board refused to even talk to CSTA members. Finally, on December 19, an agreement was reached and the strike ended. Palmer teachers did their part by picketing from early in the morning to late in the afternoon. Students talked to picketing teachers and provided munchies. Principal Lujan and Vice-principal Roberts also con- versed with them. All the striking teachers at Palmer lost money, but it was the students who lost the most, and that was an education. Substitutes were brought in to teach, but rarely were there even 50W of the students showing up for class. A lot of the student population saw the strike as an opportunity to stretch a two week Christmas vacation into a four week vacation. The students that did show up for classes were mainly dissatisfied with what was being taught, and so the Acacia Park Anti- Strike Walk-Out resulted. Palmer students gathered at .Acacia in a protest of the strike, and expressed ideas. They were against the strike, not against either CSTA or the school board, in particular. Everyone involved with the strike learned from it. Vice-principal Roberts talks to teachers. One of them was the implementation of variable scheduling. This resulted from intensive study and curriculum planning. Students were enrolled in two, three, four and five hour courses. These classes met either five days a week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, on Tuesday and Thursday, or just one day a week. Variable scheduling was designed to offer certain educational advantages, such as a greater number of course offerings, more individualized programs, and the decrease of student frustration and boredom. This new type of scheduling, along with other factors, made orientation and registration interesting, to say the least. Orientation lasted forty-five minutes, for each section of students, and consisted of advice on making out a final schedule. Books were obtained. Registration was somewhat chaotic. Counselors were busy helping students. Students made final revisions on their schedules. Student pictures were taken. Closed classes caused more problems. The seniors got first choice of classes, the juniors got second choice, and the sophomores got what was left. Then came the physical examination. Students had to undergo a series of tests including blood analysis, urinalysis, hearing check, visual scan, and speech survey. .ll1ll'LlllGllllGE Vicki Lloyd selects one of her class cards for the coming semester. District 1 1 offers a summer travel program to Europe. Each year forty students are carefully screened and granted permission to participate in the program. It is an opportunity to learn, to travel and to experience. Palmer students J ancie Ellis, Lisa Bingman, and Laurie Blanz participated in the 1975 program. Their travels took them to Madrid, Rome, Florence, Salzburg, Berlin, Paris, and London. They encountered a variety of experiences: Spanish paellag escargotg the hovercraftg the Berlin Wall, and colorful people. To travel is to experience. It is the opportunity to reach out to other people and their culturesg to discover oneself. It was a beautiful experience. It was exciting. I loved it! I'd do it again. People are really wonderful. 25 many new courses offered to students As a result of Palmer's new variable scheduling, a multitude of new classes were made available to the students. Basic courses that would have been offered five days a week were broken up into more specialized classes that met two or three days a week. Completely new classes in a wide variety of subjects were also added. Some courses met for two periods twice a week instead of one period five days a week. In commemoration with the spirits of pioneer Americans in 1776 and 1876, this schoo1 year saw the educationa1 frontiers expanded at Pa1mer with the introduction of variab1e schedu1ing. Imp1ementation of variab1e schedu1ing required con- siderab1e p1anning, design and preparation on the part of the staff and this resu1ted in a wider variety of course offerings as we11 as a change in the schedu1ing. A major objective of variab1e schedu1ing is that it continues to provide students with the very strong academic program now a tradition at Pa1mer. This year was an auspicious one for the students at Pa1mer High Schoo1 for it saw a very distinct change in the attitude and performance of Pa1mer ath1etic teams. The fa11 season was notab1e for the first foot- ba11 win over Wasson High Schoo1 by a 22-20 score in a doub1e overtime. The gir1s vo11eyba11 team tied for the South Centra1 League Championship, won the District P1ay-Off and represented Pa1mer at the State Tournament. The gir1s swim team won the South Centra1 League Championships, the A11 City Meet and finished 6th in the State Tournament. The boys basketba11 team is having its first winning season in severa1 years and at the time of this writing, it is our hope that they wi11 represent Pa1mer in District andfor State competition. It is a1so our hope that the hockey, swim and gir1s basketba11 teams as we11 as the spring sports wi11 continue these winning ways. The year was marked'by a teachers' strike which made a11 peop1e aware of our constitutiona1 right to an education which is something taken for granted but perhaps we 1earned both as staff and as students that such a right is enhanced when both the 1earner and the educator work together to make this a rea1ity. Pa1mer is a1ways a p1easant p1ace to be because of the beauti- fu1 peop1e who are students and staff. In the words of the c1ass of 1974: Uwe sha11 a1ways be proud to have been members of Wi11iam J. The rest of the season was not to be the same, however. The Terrors began a losing streak with Mitchell which continued for four games straight. It seemed impossible for Palmer to close with a winning season. This hex, which seemed to have been placed on Palmer, came to an end on October 10. In a double over- time battle with Wasson on Palmer's homecoming, two slumps were broken. The four game losing streak was cut short and, perhaps more importantly, the fact that Palmer had never beaten Wasson in 16 years put the icing on the cake. It took an expert coaching staff headed by Bob Otto, about 40 Terrors and l game to restore Palmer's faith in a superior football team. i i i Palmer Footliall coaching staff. Their 7 Win and 2 loss record ties the J.V. team of '23. With a strong defense and offense it is practically obvious that the '76-'77 varsity team will be our strongest ever. Of the twenty or so athletes beginning in November, only eight or so saw the season out. Coaches came and went, as much as the wrestlers. Ron Dally had the team until the teachers strike began - from there the Dean of Men, Jack Silas, took over. In January, Mr. Ben Madril, a Spanish teacher, gave it a try to finish up the 76 Wrestling Season. Most of the staff did not really know what they were doing and they did not really care. After many goof-ups in the various steps of producing ayearbook, we were just about ready to quit, but we managed to rally back. Our end- product is this fine literary masterpiece you now hold in your hands. We think that the following maxim quoted from nobody in particular, best described our predicament: We the unwilling, led by the unqualified, have been doing the unbelievable for so long, with so little, that we now attempt the impossible with nothing. Photographer Rolf Whitley and ex-student Darrell Shave-y hike up the Peak. The Retrospect staff, from left to right: Jenny, Debbie, Kellie, Squeak, Lisa, Barry, Kelly, Lee, Sally, Kirk, Don, Stevie, Rolf, Gene, Theresa, Robin. , 1 , -'X' Peggy Wicker demonstrates one ofthe many techniques used by the Retrospect staff to get their work done. Special thanks to Verlene Potter, and Ron Smith, our ad- visors, who managed to whip our somewhat disorganized photo staff into shape. We cou1dn't have done it without you both. Spencer 152 By JACK MAGRUDER Gavette Telegraph Sports Writer PUEBLO QGTD - You don't tug on Superman's cape. You don't spit into the wind. You don't pull, the mask off the Ol' Lone Ranger. And, as the Palmer Terrors found out the hard way Tuesday night, you d0n't mess around with Dave Netherton. Pueblo East's towering Neth- erton blocked nine Palmer field goal attempts and intimidated the Terror offense all night, enabling the Eagles to post a 54-44 victory in the South Cen- tral League's championship bas- ketball game. The state's fourth - ranked East club qualifies for the state tournament, which begins March 10 in Denver. The Terrors will join Pueblo schools South and Centennial and Widefield in a four-team si b-district playoff for the SJL's other state berth. Palmer will entertain Centen- nial at Doherty while South will .host Widefield at the Centennial gym. Both games will tip off at 8 pm Thursday. GAZETTE TELEGRAPH Wed., March 3, I976 Ter or F ll 'n itle Gameg Plat 0ffsA Next The difference in the game was the fact that we were in- timidated inside, said Palmer coach Dan McKiernan. We worked all week on get- ting the big guy up in the air and then shooting around him. We just didn't do it. We were ready for himg we just didn't do the job. He shut down our inside game and we weren't hitting from the outside. That hasn't happened to us before this sea- son. The Terrors shot an anemic 26 percent from the field in the first half, partly due to Nether- ton's inside pressure. ' ' It was a cold night, MnKiernan said. Netherton opened the game with a three-point play to put the Eagles on top before com- ing up with three blocked shots in the opening stanza as the Eagles took a slim 16-13 lead. The 6-9 junior kept working in th e second period, blocking th re e more shots and in- timidating several others, and the Eagles loosed a fast-break attack on the Terrors which gave the hosts a 32-19 lead with 2:05 left in the half. John Ellis worked free under- neath for a pair of easy two- pointers to send the Eagles on their way before first Dan Ro- sales and then Eddie Mohar scored on breakaway layups to raise the score to 32-19. Jari Wills hit a foul shot, Marty Jones hit a pair of chari- ty tosses and Kenny Moore scored on a goaltending call on Netherton to close the gap to 32- 24, but Eric Goettel ended the half with another fast-break layup to make the halftime score 34-24. B r u c e Gerster hit four straight jumpers from the 18-22 foot range to bring .the Terrors, back to within five, 39-34, after- three periods. But East tallied the first four points of the final quarter to in- crease its advantage to nine, 43- 34, and Palmer couldn't get closer than five points the rest of the way. East went into a delay game with 4:47 left and hit seven of 10 foul shots down the stretch to hold off the Terrors. Gerster took game scoring honors with 18 points - 14 in the second half - while guard Rosales led the Eagles with 16 points and Netherton addedf12. But it was the East big man's play under the Terror basket that told the difference. He's just a hell of a ball player, Eagle coach Norm Colglazier said. We wanted to play tough defense underneath, and the kid sure did the job. Palmer 13 11 io io-is Em is in s is-sg LMER - Jones 1-2-4, Wills l'-2-lt, Gerster 9-2-18, Moore 3-O-6. Fouled our-Noni, er o Bul 3 gage ou or State By CHRIS JENKINS Gazette Telegraph Sports Writer A guy, or an entire team for that matter, can be embar- rassed for only so long before: the time comes to fight back. Such is the history of Palm- er's Terrors in general, and Thursda ni ht in articular Y 8 P - I For several years prior to the 1975-76 basketbell season, the Terrors were for the most part s e c o n d-class citizens in the tough South Central League. Deciding it was time for af GAZETTE TELEGRAPH Friday, March 5, I976 change, they came on strong this year to capture the Century Division cage title. A g ain Thursday, Palmer arose from a point of embar- rassment to defeat Pueblo Cen- tennial 53-49 at the Doherty gym. In doing so, Palmer land- ed a spot opposite Pueblo South in tonight's sub-district finale. The two will meet at Doherty at 8 p.m., with the winner ad- vancing to the state Class AAA tourney in Denver. The night could have been disastrous for Dan McKiernan and his Terrors. After dominat- in g Centennial's timber-like starting five in the first half and early in the third period, they found themselves out- scored 18-2 in one stretch by five Bulldog substitutes - all but one of which stood less than six-foot. But the Terrors, possibly th a n k s to Centennial coach Fran Coxen's decision to put his starters back in, reeled off eight straight points. And again off the bench came those pesky little Bulldogs. But Coxen had pushed his luck, and Terrors Bruce Gerster, Howard Lawson and Jari Wills sealed Centennial's fate with clutch baskets. The entire affair left McKiernan, among others, a bit bewildered. I really don't know how to react, he said. Defensively we were tough - anytime you hold a team to 49 points you're doing v:ell,We were sluggish of- fensively, and yet the kids kept their composure three or four times when they really needed to - and that's the sign of a good team. And we were playing a team that next to Pueblo East has been the toughest for us to play against. Centennial just does a lot of things that hurt us. Like coming up with a bench with enough spunk to outclass not only Centennial's starters, but Palmer's as well. It was -almost as if Coxen had been waiting all season for just the right time to spring his sec- ond string into action. That same group of subs - Ken Hite, Norm Aragon, Bill Gower, Rande Newhard and Gary Wolf - also did some- thing no other team has man- aged to do all season. They pulled Palmer out of the zone defense, which has been the Terrors' bread-and-butter. Leading 42-35 as the final pe- riod opened, Centennial came out with the intent of killing the clock with a four-corner offense. A bit early, most thought, but not according to McKiernan. 'tl thought it was a good move, he said. They pulled lus out of the zone with it, and that hasn't happened all year. And we had to stick with the man-to-man until we got the lead back. Centennlal's strategy was in- deed effective, at least it was until Coxen benched his bench in favor of the starters. After Steve Prater and Ger- ster brought Palmer ba ck to within one point, Kenny Moore put the Terrors back in front at 4 54 4 . Centennial rebounded with two straight buckets, but Gerster hit a shot from the cor- ner, Lawson sank a free throw and Wills notched a three-point play to hand Palmer the lead it never relinquished. Centennia1's Dennis Genty canned two free throws with two seconds left on the clock, only to have his effort neutral- ized by Lawson's layup at the final buzzer. Prater and Wills each fin- ished with 14 points for game honors and the distinction of being the only players in double figures. Wills was most impres- sive on defense, though, limiting Rod Mclnnis of Centennial to a harmless four points. South's Colts loom as a giant obstacle in light of their 77-57 thrashing of Widefield Thursday night, but McKiernan expressed confidence nevertheless. We ohly met South once this year, and they killed us with the zone press, he said. Since then, we've killed every zone press we've met. By JACK MAGRUDER Gazette Telegraph Sports Writer was Bruce Gerster's night agmficent outside shooting the senior backcourt man bled Palmer to shred a eblo South defense that had miliated the Terrors earlier season as the Tribe clipped eblo South 55-51 in overtime earn a state basketball tour- ment berth. Gerster was at the pinnacle of s game Friday, scoring 29 ints including four clutch llies in overtime --to lead an McKiernan's club to its rve Jangling, heart-wrenching iumph in the finals of the uth Central League's sub-disk ict cage tourney at Doherty rlday. The Tribe will advance to Vednesday's first round of the tate AAA playoffs in Denver iy virtue of the decision. It will ie the Terrors' first state ap- nearance since the 1958-69 sea- .on. I honestly can't believe it, raid a limp McKiernan outside he winner's locker room follow- ng the game. It's almost like a dream -I can't believe it. We've been ready for South and their press for a long time. The Palmer win was predi- cated on the team's ability to break South's full-game, full- court trapping zone press. Using quick in-court passes tt shifty guard Mike Urig, the Terrors turned theColts' strate- gy awry, consistently moving the ball without duress into the South offensive zone. In fact, Palmer had three-on-- two offensive opportunities nu- merous times. Ann that's where Gerster came in. ights. a er Shock th in CT Stationed deep in Colt territo- YY, he frequently was open from the 15to-20-foot range and con- sistently capitalized on the three-on-two situations to con- vert long-range jumpers into Palmer points. We set our offense up to get Bruce the ball, said McKiernan. Once he gets his confidence up, he's something else from outside. 1've said all long that he's the best shooter in the league. Gerster was at his best when the chips were on the table. After scoring six of his 25 regulation points in the fourth period as the teams battle fu- riously, Gerster canned an 18- footer just nine seconds into the overtime session to give Palmer a 51-49 advantage. Then the 6-0 guard who was 13 of 21 on the night closed out the scoring with 54 seconds left in the extra session when he cashed in on a pair of pressure- packed foul shots, making the score 55-51. Earlier in the overtime peri- od, the ferocious 1-3-1 Terror zone defense had forced the Colts into a missed shot, after which Steve Parter had canned two charity tosses to give the Tribe a 53-49 lead. After Mike Maguire trimmed the gap to two at 53-51 with a 25-footer at the 1:02 mark, Ger- ster sank his foul shots and the game was Pa1mer's. South got only one more shot at the basket in the final 54 sec'- onds while the joyous Terro fans ringed the court in antici- pation of the big victory. The Colts had a chance to win the game in regulation time after taking possession of the ball with 1:29 left in the fourth period and the score tied 49-49. South coach Bobby Graham ordered his club into a delay game and the Colts killed 1:10 before Jim Golob's attempted layup after a lob pass under- neath went amiss. The Terrors tipped the ball out of bounds and South re- tained possession with seven seconds left. but tight defense by Palmer's Ken Moore and Mike Urig forced a turnover and sent the game into over- time. Gerster was super, said a disconsolate Graham after the tilt. He didn't cool off. When you've got a kid hitting like that, there's nothing you cari do. I can't believe the feeling, Gerster after the game. That's the best I ever played, but I couldnft have done it without the rest of the guys. They were all great. We were ready for them tonight, said Terror pivotznan Jari Wills, who spiked a pair of early Colt shots and played an intimidating role underneath throughout the game. We just got into 'em. GAZETTE TELEGRAPH Saturday, March 6, I976 Fa S, n GAZETTE TELEGRAPH Thursday, March Il, I976 Smother Terror By JACK MAGRUDER Gazette Telegraph Sports Writer DENVER KGTJ - Wheat Ridge had the best defensive team in the Class AAA ranks going into the state basketball tournament. Wednesday at Denver's Audi- torium-Arena, the Palmer Ter- rors found out why. The Jeffco League champions smothered Palmer's offense in the first half, limiting the Ter- rors to just eight points, and coasted to a 62-32 first-round triumph. Wheat Ridge will meet Boul- der, a 66-36 victor over Grand Junction Wednesday, in the AAA quarterfinals at 6:45 p.m. They're the best defensive team we've played all season, said Palmer coach Dan McKiernan. I think they're the best team over-all in the tour- namentf' Wheat Ridge scored the first 15 points ofthe game, with big men Drew Head t6-103 and Craig Austin 66-95 doing most of the damage, before Steve Pra- ter finally put Palmer on the scoreboard with only 17 seconds remaining in the first period. The Farmers then outscored Palmer 13-5 in the first seven minutes of the second period. They got us down so fast we had to get out of our game, said McKiernan. We started hurrying out shots, and that hurt us. Our wings were getting the ball and taking the shot be- fore trying to penetrate. Our offense was just stand- ing around - we didn't have much movement. We were ner- vous. sure. but we have no ex- cuses. We just got beat. Wheat Ridge held a 28-8 half- time advantage before spurting to a 49-22 advantage after three periods. Both teams substituted liberally in the last quarter as the Farmers opened their lead- to as many as 34 points. Farmer big men Head and Austin were the top scorers. Austin tallied 27 for game honors while Head chipped in with 14. The two also helped Wheat Ridge for a 35-24 edge in rebounding. In addition, the two combined to demolish Palmer's trapping half-court press. Down 18-5 early in the second period, McKiernan ordered his club to go into a trapping 1-3-1 align- ment. But lob passes to Austin and Head enabled the Farmers to effectively cramp the Terrors' strategy. i'We were playing pretty good defense for a while, but that trap can only work so long, said McKieman. If we could have come down and scored and had a good exchange early, I think we could have stayed right with them. But they were cool - they got off to a good start - and we panicked. lt's hard to come up here for the first time and play against a team with such state tournament experience. Tourna- ment games are different than any game in the season. There's nothing like it. Junior forward Prater led the Terrors with- 10 points while sophomore forward Howard Lawson added eight. Bruce Ger- ster, who hit 29 points against Pueblo South in the subdistrict finals, took only five shots and scored four points.
