53 tgexqzzfcenfefzfzmfaf Xie Qzscazfefly ln thts year of 1956 the Ptkes Peak Regton ts commemoratmg the dtscovery of the famous Blue Mountatn by a year long sesqutcentenntal celebratuon In 1806 Zebulon Ptke ftrst stghted the Grand Peak whtch towers 14 110 feet above sea level and now bears has name Zebulon Montgomery Ptke was born tn Lamberton New Jersey January 5 1779 and at the age of ftfteen was servtng as a cadet tn has fathers regtment of the Untted States Army ln 1806 durtng Jefferson s term as ,Jrestdent Lteutenant Ptke was ap potnted to be nn command of a party to explore the southwestern part of the Loutstana Purchase whtch was acqurred tn 1803 In July Ptke left St louts wtth a company of twenty two men He followed the Mtssoun Rtver unto Kansas and then headed south unto Colorado On November 15 at a dtstance of one hundred and ftfty mules Ptke ftrst stghted the lofty Grand Peak that ts now Amertca s most famous mountam He ftrst tdenttfted the speck tn the dlstance as the Blue Mountain of the Mextcon Moun tatns Hts trek through thus pratrte Country was slowed down but on November 24 he was able to construct a small fort on Fountatn Creek on the stte that as now the ctty of Pueblo On November 26 1806 Ptke near the foot of the lofty mountam Chrtstened tt Grand Peak The massnve Blue Mountann now stands as a mtghty monument tn the memory of students and restdents of the Ptkes Peak Regton and all Amenca to one of the explorers tn the development of Amertca P W ' A ktlfum Mrs , N, v S, - ' f 1 , N' f 'YdL 71- A? 11, .
