George zmh 2515 fgtrl When I settled down on the bleachers near the west slde of Wash burn F1eld the f1rst s1ght that met my eyes was a number of players 1n brown and wh1te sults on the d1amond The m1ghty Trgers, decked 1n the1r strlpes of orange and black, were restlng on the bench at the foot of the grandstand My attentlon was next drawn to a very fme tlower garden Just below me But lt was not the hat Qfor such th1s gorgeous d1splay of fmery really wasj that 1nterested me so much It was rather the person under It who attracted my gaze Io be sure I could not see her face, but I could hear her vorce dulcet and rnno cent, Just such a vorce as you hear trom a Q0 ed bhe was talk1ng to a young fellow, who, I notxced, was lmmensely rnterested 1n the game Oh, George, aren t those brown and whrte su1ts beautlful? But, George, why do the hxgh school wear brown and whlte and the college gold and black? Oh, those are then' school colors, he rnformed her I thmk the new dormltory IS Just perfectly lovely from th1s v I do so hope I can stay at the halls when I go to college, she remarked Yes, I hope so, he answered 1n a vo1ce that showed he d1d not hear her, or at least d1d not take any 1nterest 1n what she was sayxng You know, I thlnk Gladys 1S Just terubly sllly about 14 rank, and Grace makes so much fun of her From th1s remark I gathered that the speaker would l1ke to 1n dulge 1n a b1t of gOSS1p, but 1n th1s she was drsappomted, for Just then one of our players threw the ball to f1rst base and put the college runner out Pretty peg! pretty peg! yelled George George, oh George, what are pegs? Oh I see, she burst out know1ngly, after a pause They put pegs so the players wlll know where to stand George seemed somewhat vexed bv th1s fme dlsplay of baseball knowledge but held h1s peace I wonder what they are domg now? No Margaret she answered hghtly ' I've declded not to go to college next year there don t ask questlons I must go now I I ve left a note for you plnned to the old apple tree It w1l1 tell you somethmg that I can t She was gone before Margaret could say a word As soon as Margaret reached home she started stralght for the orchard By the moon s br1ght rays she had no d1ff1culty 1n f1nd1ng the note Str1k1ng a match wh1ch she had brought she tore It open and read Margaret Dear Thls note IS only to say good by to you We leave at 11 tomght for the west Papa faxled 1n buslness a month ago, and although we have kept lt qulet so far by tomorrow every one w1ll know lt all Margaret I don t want you to thmk me selflsh and horrld as you d1d the day I found you here 1n the orchard You understand now don t you Why I tr1ed for the scholarshlp what It meant to me? No You see, the college IS gorng out 1nto the f1eld and the hrgh school 1S commg 1n to bat, he began 1n a much bored manner, but she cut h1m short by askmg What f1eld ! Why dont they keep the h1gh school boys t there to chase the balls? Just then some one below her yelled, Get a h1t Dad! Van can't pltch he w1ll have to hang a br1ck on that ball before he can get xt d wn to you George, why do they want Dad to get h1t7 And I know h ldn t throw the ball w1th a buck on It ' In a few m1nutes Dad started to steal second base and George 3 mped up and yelled frant1cally Hlt the d1rt! Hlt the d1rt!' D1d he h1t the d1I'lZ? was the meek 1nqu1 y Y s, don t you see h1m brushmg lt off h1s Sllltln My but he stole that base sl1ck Ty Cobb couldnt have done better h1mself, was the next comment from George lt back? Why dont you go after h1m, George, you could make h1m take It back, she contmued 1n a doc1le femlmne tone George's reply was drowned 1n a sudden burst of cheenng' The 1nn1ng was soon over and as one of the college players was tak1ng h1s place at bat one of h1s supporters crled out Smash that ball over the fence Just then the batter struck v1c1ously at the ball However he only succeeded 1n touchlng lt, and It went over the backstop 1nto the park then mto some small boy s pocket They always do Just what they are told, don't they George? He s have smashed It too, because they are play1ng Wlth a new ball I then became so 1nterested 1n the game that I d1d not notlce George and h1s enterta1n1ng fr1end unt11 the e1ghth 1nn1ng, when one of the fellows made a home run, and George Jumped h1gh 1n the alr, shout1ng at the top of h1s vo1ce Go home! Get there! Go home After George had come back to earth she asked Why d1d you want h1m to go home?
