get grahuahnn The last d1sh had been put away the cat had been fed the floor wept clean Wlth unusual efractness Margaret placed the pots and pans 1n therr accustomed places Then calmly puttlng on a b1g shade hat she walked slowly out of the door and down the path toward the orchard It was there that she always went when she w1shed to be alone She remembered the last t1me she had gone down there It was 1ust after Professor Grlswold had told her conf1dent1ally that she had a surer chance of wlnmng the Morton scholarshlp than any one else ln school And now now She dropped down 1n the shade of a gnarled apple tree and burled her face 1n the fragrant blossoms at 1tS foot It was all so unfalr so ungust she thought brtterly She had worked so hard so falthfully and now the coveted years of college l1fe seemed snatched out of her reach forever She sat and thought It all over One th1ng was certa1n She must now put away all those dear dreams of college wh1ch she had encour aged for nearly four years Only a month ago how real they had been! It seemed so long that she had strlven for that prlze the scholarshlp wh1ch was her only means of goxng to college There was only one glrl 1n school who through xt all, had made grades equal to Margaret's, and thls one g1r1 Barbara Freeman, was very wealthy and had made a statement that she would not accept the scholarshlp even should she get It Th1s put Margaret at the head Then suddenly, about a month prev1ous Barbara had announced her 1ntent1on of trylng for the scholarshlp Barbara was naturally br1ll1ant and Margaret knew that however hard she worked she could not surpass her It meant so much to Margaret wh1le to Barbara-of course It was a prlze well worth havrng but Barbara would go to college anyway wh1le Margaret aga1n the unfalrness of It all swept over her as she saw for herself only an endless V1St3 of pots and pans and k1tchen floors She sat up sud denly It was wrong of Barbara Freeman to take that scholarshlp when she knew that 1t was the only means of Margaret 's gomg to college, when she knew how hard oh how very hard she had to1led for It Sud denly by some 1ntu1t1on she turned around and there a few feet away stood Barbara Freeman gazmg down upon her.
