It seemed so long that she had strlven for that prlze the scholarshlp wh1ch was her only means of goxng to college There was only one glrl 1n school who through xt all, had made grades equal to Margaret's, and thls one g1r1 Barbara Freeman, was very wealthy and had made a statement that she would not accept the scholarshlp even should she get It Th1s put Margaret at the head Then suddenly, about a month prev1ous Barbara had announced her 1ntent1on of trylng for the scholarshlp Barbara was naturally br1ll1ant and Margaret knew that however hard she worked she could not surpass her It meant so much to Margaret wh1le to Barbara-of course It was a prlze well worth havrng but Barbara would go to college anyway wh1le Margaret aga1n the unfalrness of It all swept over her as she saw for herself only an endless V1St3 of pots and pans and k1tchen floors She sat up sud denly It was wrong of Barbara Freeman to take that scholarshlp when she knew that 1t was the only means of Margaret 's gomg to college, when she knew how hard oh how very hard she had to1led for It Sud denly by some 1ntu1t1on she turned around and there a few feet away stood Barbara Freeman gazmg down upon her. George zmh 2515 fgtrl When I settled down on the bleachers near the west slde of Wash burn F1eld the f1rst s1ght that met my eyes was a number of players 1n brown and wh1te sults on the d1amond The m1ghty Trgers, decked 1n the1r strlpes of orange and black, were restlng on the bench at the foot of the grandstand My attentlon was next drawn to a very fme tlower garden Just below me But lt was not the hat Qfor such th1s gorgeous d1splay of fmery really wasj that 1nterested me so much It was rather the person under It who attracted my gaze Io be sure I could not see her face, but I could hear her vorce dulcet and rnno cent, Just such a vorce as you hear trom a Q0 ed bhe was talk1ng to a young fellow, who, I notxced, was lmmensely rnterested 1n the game Oh, George, aren t those brown and whrte su1ts beautlful? But, George, why do the hxgh school wear brown and whlte and the college gold and black? Oh, those are then' school colors, he rnformed her I thmk the new dormltory IS Just perfectly lovely from th1s v I do so hope I can stay at the halls when I go to college, she remarked Yes, I hope so, he answered 1n a vo1ce that showed he d1d not hear her, or at least d1d not take any 1nterest 1n what she was sayxng You know, I thlnk Gladys 1S Just terubly sllly about 14 rank, and Grace makes so much fun of her From th1s remark I gathered that the speaker would l1ke to 1n dulge 1n a b1t of gOSS1p, but 1n th1s she was drsappomted, for Just then one of our players threw the ball to f1rst base and put the college runner out Pretty peg! pretty peg! yelled George George, oh George, what are pegs? Oh I see, she burst out know1ngly, after a pause They put pegs so the players wlll know where to stand George seemed somewhat vexed bv th1s fme dlsplay of baseball knowledge but held h1s peace I wonder what they are domg now? Why dont you go after h1m, George, you could make h1m take It back, she contmued 1n a doc1le femlmne tone George's reply was drowned 1n a sudden burst of cheenng' The 1nn1ng was soon over and as one of the college players was tak1ng h1s place at bat one of h1s supporters crled out Smash that ball over the fence Just then the batter struck v1c1ously at the ball However he only succeeded 1n touchlng lt, and It went over the backstop 1nto the park then mto some small boy s pocket They always do Just what they are told, don't they George?
