MR. GEORGE F. MCNAMEE MR. ALDEN B. CARDER BOARD OF TRUSTEE One of the hallmarks of American public schools is their close identity with the communities they serve. Chosen annually to preserve this distinguishing feature are thousands of laymen. These laymen serve on the governing bodies of school dis- tricts, called variously a board of trustees or a board of edu- cation . According to prevailing practice , members ofa school board of trustees are elected at large by registered voters living within each school district. They serve without pay, for varying terms, and meet regu- larly to pass final iudgment, within certain limits imposed by the State Legislature, on school business. Like their counter- parts throughout the country, the Board of Trustees of the Ante- lope Valley Joint Union High School District are laymen.
