Layton, A. B., A. M., University of M The editors and staff of the 1962 Islander wish to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. William S. Layton, who has served this School faithfully for ten years. During that period, he has taught grades five and six in the Middle School as well as serving as Head of the Middle School from 1953 to 1957. In September of 1957 he was appointed Assistant to the Headmaster. Along with administrative duties, Mr. Layton taught English and Music Literature in the Upper School. He has in the past been director of the glee club, and for the last four years, he has been a strong force in yearbook activities. It is because of his kind interest and unstinting service to our School that we sincerely wish to show our appreciation and gratitude. Niemann, Headmaster, with Lady Boots THE IIEADMASTEITS MESSAGE: The message from the I-leadmaster that is traditionally found in yearbooks is never a simple thing to write, and this year in particular I find it a somewhat difficult task. I shall be leaving Palm Beach Private on July lst, and this message therefore becomes one of farewell. After twelve years of association with the School, it is not easy to say goodbye. Perhaps I can best begin by expressing the pleasure I have derived from my work at the school during my two years as a teacher of English and Latin and my ten years as Headmaster. It has been a happy and rewarding experience, and in leaving I take with me a host of heart-warming and soul satisfying memories. It is naturally gratifying to view the growth and development of the School during the past ten years, including the increase in enrollment from 156 to 302 and the expansion of facilities through the interest and generosity of the parents. It is even more gratifying, however, to know that, through the inspiration and hard work of a dedicated faculty and staff and the enthusiasm of the student body, the high academic standards of the School have been maintained and even improved. This has been accompanied by a steady improvement in the athletic program and in the extra-curricular activities, of which The Islander is a significant part. To those of you who are leaving Palm Beach Private for prep school and college, I extend my best wishes for much happiness and success in the years ahead. It is my hope that through your academic work and your activities you will make an important contribution to the schools and colleges that have accepted you. It is also my hope that you will retain your ties with Palm Beach Private, returning to the School during your vacation periods and continuing your interest in its development during the coming years. To those of you who will be returning to the School in September, I express the hope that you will work together, with enthusiasm and seriousness of purpose, to make Palm Beach Private a school of which you, your parents, and the community can be proud. The good name of the School is in your hands. Treat it with the respect and devotion that it deserves. A word or two of congratulations should certainly go to the staff of TI-IE ISLANDEB and to Mr. Layton, their faculty advisor, for their efforts to maintain the high quality of previous yearbooks and to place this year's edition in the hands of the students before the close of the school year. And now it is time for Mrs. Niemann and myself to say goodbye - - to all those parents who have shown such a deep interest in the School and who have contributed to its growth through their generosity and their services, to all those loyal alumni and alumnae whom it has been our pleasure to greet as they returned to visit us year after yearg to the loyal and devoted members of the faculty and staff who have made our work so much easier and who are, indeed, the pillars to the Schoolg and finally to you, the students, who have filled our years in Palm Beach with a delightfully stimulating combination of enjoyment and exasperation and who, when all is said and done, will truly determine the future of the Palm Beach Private School. 5 D onald E. Under the direction of Mrs. Niemann, with the assistance of Mr. Aiken and Mr. Ten Eyck, the Privateers have learned the fundamentals of acting, lighting, make-up, costuming, and scenery construction. This year, in the first semester, the major production was the Prose and Poetry Readings. In the second semester, the main concentration was on George Washington Slept Here , this year's Spring Play. Congratulations to them for an outstanding year. SCULPTURE Sculpture is one of the most popular extracurricular activities which is offered at the Palm Beach Private School. Sculpture enables the student to express himself through several mediums, such as wood, clay, and stone. In addition to the enjoyment of creating, the student learns many of the basic techniques in sculpturing. We are fortunate to have such a gifted artist as Mr. ,Ienkings for our instructor. Through his competent instruction, the class has received many awards at the various art shows in this area. GLEE CLUB The Glee Club is under the leadership of Mr. Edward Palmer. Mr. Palmer also has a choral group of his own. The purpose of the Glee Club is to train students to use their voices properly, and at the same time to permit them to enjoy the activity thoroughly. So far this year the Glee Club has sung two choral arrangements-one at Parents' Night and one in Christmas Caroling at the various hospitals throughout this area. We certain- ly have enjoyed this year with Mr. Palmer and greatly appreciate what he has done for us. ATLANTIS Q K i'QiE'T4M5'if gg, ,.::. E p .. ,,,, ff-:fa The Atlantis is the literary magazine of the Palm Beach Private School. Its first publication was in 1937. The main purpose of the Atlantis is to strengthen the knowledge of its readers through interesting reading. The best short stories, poems, essays, and articles are se- lected from the writings of all the students in the various grades of both the upper, middle, and lower schools by the editoral board. The editor of the Atlantis is Leila Richards, and the editoral staff includes Georgia Riley, ,Ioli Von Rebhan, Sandra Hardeen, Florence Seeley, Bill Burroughs, Will Rasmus- sen, Bob Rooth, and Mike Garvan. The faculty advisor is Mr. Skinner. YEARBOOK if . A i Deadline after deadline, cancelled meeting after cancelled meeting, quarrels, squabbles, headaches, bruised knuckles, but we finally finished our yearbook. We, the staff, hope that this yearbook will be considered one of your treasures now and in the future. PORTFOLIO The Middle and Lower School newspaper, The Portfolio, is a publication which appears throughout the school year. Compiled entirely by a staff of Middle Schoolers, headed by Barbara Bayless, it includes poems, stories, articles, and the gossip from the Nursery School through the Sixth Grade. We wish to congratulate the entire staff and the faculty advisor Mr. Bayless for the excel- lent job they have done this year. ART In Art Class, the students have a chance to express themselves freely. Whether in oil or watercolors they have learned to show their creative senses. Under the guidance of Mr. and Mrs. George Jenkings, the students are taught many valuable points toward a practical knowledge of art. Art is a definite addition to the more pleasant side of study at the Palm Beach Private School. x. I ii? l A cr: .w If Q 1. ig CERAMICS Ceramics is a field in which students learn to express their feelings through clay and glass. It is an activity which teaches the hands to be creative and imaginative. Under the direction of Mrs. Kort, this has become a popular and rewarding course. The Leaders' Club was founded three years ago when it was felt that the Girls' Athle- tic Association was of no effect. Miss Gloria Bryant, Girls' Athletic instructor, is the faculty advisor. The purpose was to give example to other girls, to give aid to those girls who might need itg and to expand the present athletic program or improve it. The girls were chosen from the seventh to the twelfth grades for qualities of leader- ship, honor, integrity, courtesy, loyalty, initiative, self-sacrifice, and cooperation. There were fifteen charter members chosen. Since then, new members have been chosen by the girls themselves, and the maximum number of members has been kept at fifteen. Each girl has a job within the athletic program. The girls have sponsored many projects: among them have been cookie sales, booths in the bazaars, a student-faculty volley ball game, and, of course, pep rallies. The present members are: Dora Dixon, Nina Seely, Peta Paull, Ann Weldon, Page Lee Hufty, Georgia Riley, Ann Biggs, ,Ioli von Rebhan, Denise Anderson, Spency Love, Lisa Thayer, and Leslie Mitchell. STUDENT COUNCIL This year the Student Council has been very busy planning many different events, the first of which was the Christmas Dance which proved very success- ful. They are also planning an Honor System which will go into effect next year and will be a definite asset to the school. We will always remember the Bus Bazaar and consider it one of the highlights of the year. Yes, this has certainly been a busy year and many thanks to the group of students who helped to make it possible, headed by: Mike Burton, our President, Nina Seely, Vice-President, Ann Garvin, Secretary, and Ann Weldon, Treasurer. Safety Patrol Left to Right: Mary Hufty, Barbara Bayless, Lela Love, Paul Maddock, Captain, Prior Powers, Harold Holmyard, Michael Tiernan. SPORTS r 1, fa LZ X1 FOOTBALL This year the 7-12 Grade varsity football team played a rugged five game schedule. The team won two and lost one. The varsity was led by the quarter- backing of Bobby Bayless, while the line was led by Bobert Moser. Uther out- standing players were Mel Riley, Bevoe Bassford, and Jamie Wakem. Even though a few on every team stand out, the team, as a whole, played well to- gether. This accounts for much of their success this year. They were greatly inspired by the coaching of Mr. Bouclas and Mr. Bayless. . .M - 1512 'xr- n9ms2,4 J 83 MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL The Middle School varsity football team played an undefeated three game schedule this year. Though not a member of the staff, you were always willing to help whenever your presence was needed. Whatever we wanted a bee to do, you did it with finesse. Without your school spirit, the yearbook would have lacked the added humor and color. We, the staff, are very grateful for your contribution.
