THE GALLEON I960 PALM BEACH J U N 1 jf V i i - i l LAKE WORTH FLORIDA As we the graduating class leave for senior college or our life ' s work, our future years, we take with us many memories of our accomplish- ments here at Palm Beach Junior College — and a few failures. How many times have we walked to the Student Lounge, spent hours in the Library, cheered ourselves hoarse for a volleyball team, waded through puddles, aimed an evading ar- row at an elusive target, or focused in vain for a squirming protozoan! These are small things — insignificant memories which we hope GAL- LEON has caught and recorded for future laughs and sighs. We cannot say what our future holds hidden for us and from us, but with the guidance and experience of Palm Beach Junior College, we face the new dawnings of our lives with assur- ance and trust. These are the reasons that we, the editors, proudly present GALLEON — 1960. — Connie Berry, Co-editor W ' -aC,.: MISS GALLEON LENI BOYNTON Miss Galleon, Miss Sophomore, Miss Freshman, and members of the Court of Beauty were chosen not only for their beauty, but also for their poise, charm, personality, and intellect. The judges were Judge and Mrs. Russell O. Morrow and Mr. Curtis Gentry. Pictures made at Bethesda-by-the-Sea Church by Mr. Ray Wendt of Sam R. Quincey Studio. COURT OF MISS LYNN BARTLETT f: ' ■ M)! ' ! ' MISS MARY ANN CARROLL i.f ' - ' «« BW j .:)f ' B rM a ' ' i BEAUTY MISS LINDA JACKSON MISS JUDY PETRO MISS SYLVIA PRINCE f GETTING ACQUAINTED First we got acquainted with registration: standing in line, filling out forms, making schedules, making out new schedules be- cause of closed sections, paying fees — but it finally ended and we were college stu- dents. BEACH-A-CUE The fall get-acquainted Beach-a-cue, spon- sored by the Intramural and Recreation Board, was held at Phipps Ocean Beach Park right after the opening of school. The largest freshman class ever to register at PBJC listens to orientation lectures in the Student Center. The All-Campus Dance, sponsored by the Student Government, gave us an early opportunity to make new friends. ELECTIONEERING AND VOTING Promises — slogans — speeches — politics filled the air when sophomores and freshmen once again pulled levers for the candidate of their choice. County voting machines aided PBJC ' ers in practicing the ideals of democratic government. 1 ' T TN ' ' wni ■ H| 1 1 f fl Hj is ' K Bhi sp V ' 1 1 Administration Building THE COLLEGE Hail to thee, our Alma Mater ! Your name we hold high with pride. Though we may wander far asunder Still you are by our side. Fond mem ' ries of friends Still linger on. You ' ll ever be our inspiration Long after we are gone. All our hearts are filled with gladness When we think of thee. Hail, Palm Beach Junior College ! You shall immortal be. We saw a beacon on the shore. It drew us with its flame. With eyes that sought an open door. With seeking minds we came. We found a fire that lit our own That kindled joy within our souls. And on a thousand vistas shone, That we might chart high goals. The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness. If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind. — Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet 23 MISS EDNA WILSON Administrative Assistant MRS. FALL After the early get-acquainted activities, social life got into full swing. These events ranged from the very informal square dance, skating party, and Sadie Hawkins Day Dance to the more sophisticated Harvest Moon Ball and Win- ter Mardi Gras Ball (see picture of young lady dancing without shoes). Drama had excellent offerings in the tragedy Death of a Salesman and the mystery-comedy Spider ' s Web. As 1959 ended, there came a series of concerts by the College Singers featuring Christmas music, and the Student-Alumni Dance the day after Christmas. Thi Del and Tri Omega had dances before Christmas. Alpha Fi ' s Coronation Ball came the week after Christmas holidays. Chi Sig had its dinner dance and Phi Da Di its Sweetheart Ball after semester exams. Then came formal rushing parties — but, oh, look at the pictures. SPRING A host of activities take place between the end of February and commencement, but the GALLEON must go to press too early to in- clude them the same year. Therefore, the activi- ties in this section really occurred in the spring of 1959, and this spring ' s events will be in GALLEON ' 61. There were banquets, dances, and picnics. Phi Rho Pi and Phi Da Di had banquets and Philo its formal Arch Dance. Happy Birthday (Hie!) was a rollicking comedy and Mr. Crane ' s original play Joan of Arc was very striking in the simplicity of its staging and the effective- ness of its lighting and sound effects.
