HISTORY ' E, as members of the graduating class of 1948, have more to remember about the expansion of Palm Beach Junior Colle ' a;e than any other class, for we took part in it. We saw our col- lege emerge from a small two building institution to a college whose many buildings are en- hanced by a beautiful and spacious campus. We began our college career in September of 1946; and, as the first phase of our educational program, underwent a period of orientation. At our first class meeting we elected Bob MacDonald to serve as our president. A peppy Virginia reel at the first dance, September 27, gave us an oppji ' tunity to get acquainted with one another; and, as a follow-up, the student body sponsored a Hallov, ' een dance at the Armory. Teams of baseball, basketball, swimming, and tennis were organized and in the course of the year proved to be outstanding. For the first time in PBJC history, che?rieadeis were elected to stir up school spirit. Social activities were increased by the addition of the Thi Del Cluo, .vhile the Philo Club and the Phi Da Di Fraternity, each well established, expanded their activities to meet the enlarged en- rollment. The Esquire Club sponsored a Negro Football Game, all proceeds going to the athletic fund. In the latter oart of December, we attended the annual Christmas Dance at the Norton Art Gallery. This was a gala occasion which afforded pleasure for all. Returning to school in January, the entire student body prepared for some tough exams. Soon afterwards the Co-Eds gave a patio party and dance at the SUB following the Orlando basketball f;ame. In the early months of 1947, the Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsored a campaign to sell Junior College basketball tickets. The campaign was climaxed March 7 with a dance at the Lake Worth Casino. On April 11 the Philos gave their Spring Formal at the Norton Art Gallery and at this time initiated their traditional Arch Dance. Activity Day was the big day of the year. That day the entire student body traveled to Grey- nolds park in IVIiami where everyone had a marvelous time eating, canoeing, swimming, and .iust loafing. The last month and a half of the college year was crammed with hurried activities. The highly successiul BLACKLIST OF 1947 was produced; the Freshman Class was host to the Sophomores at the annual Freshman-Sophomore Banquet held at the George Washington Hotel; the queen of PBJC was crowned at the Esquire Dance; and the final Commencement Dance, sponsored by the Thi Del Club, was held at the Norton Art Gallery. THE big year for us, our Sophomore year, came on with a bang and with a steady stream of activities from the first. Bill Chickering was elected president of the student body. Again the Philo Club, Phi Da Di Fraternity, and Thi Del Club were active and eagerly partici- pated in all the college functions. A new social ciub. The Egalite, joined the other three on the campus. It was during this year that the student body so capably handled, with the assistance of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Florida-Georgia Football Game. On November 29 the Esquires were hosts at their first beach party of the year at Manhattan Beach. This was followed by a Sadie Hawkins Fjeld Day given by the Co-Eds at the prospective SUB at Morrison Field. Christmas came again and along with it another student body dance at the Norton Art Gallery and banquets at the South Ocean Club by the Philo and Thi Del Clubs. But happy vacations were soon forgotten to concentrate on mid-semester exams. These in turn were forgotten when on Janu- ary 16 the Gene Krupa Dance was held at the Morrison Field PX. The proceeds from this dance helped to furnish our new SUB. Second semester rolled around and found us moved to our new campus at Morrison Field. Rat Week was replaced by Rat Day, at which time the freshmen were made quite unrecognizable. The PBJC Minstrel was presented on the 19th and 20th of March; and, on April 11, open house was held in order that the people of Palm Beach County could familiarize themselves with our new college site. February 14 the Thi Dels gave a St. Valentine ' s Dance at the SUB, this dance being followed on March 12 by the annual Philo Ball. The Co-Ed Club sponsored a successful style show, using Junior College girls to model the latest fashions in resort wear. Pre-commencement activities were climaxed by the Lettermen ' s Sweetheart Dance, April 16; the Esquire Dance, May 14; the Phi Da Di Banquet at Leon Eddie ' s, May 17; the Freshmen-Sophomore Banquet at the South Ocean Club, June 7; and the Sophomore Breakfast at Howard Johnson ' s, June 7. And then graduation was here. Baccalaureate Services were held at the Memorial Presbyterian Church and the Commencement Exercises in the quadrangle at the college. Commencement was fol- lowed by a reception in the patio and a dance in the SUB honoring the 58 rrjemtoers of the graduat- ing class. We all hate to say goodbye to Junior College, but we ' ll take with us wherever we go the knowledge we have received here and a memory packed with the fun we had at GOOD OLE PBJC.
