Latin Lives Though some think of Latin as a language that has long since disappeared from our everyday lives and culture, it is quite the opposite. Original Latin words are used in every aspect of daily life. Such common words as stadium, campus, exit and alumnus as well as most abbreviations letc., R.xl are taken directly from the Latin language. The Romans have also directly contributed to our modern civilization in the fields of government, law, medicine, architecture and astronomy Some of our modern sports events traces, wrestling and fencingj were first introduced by the Romans. Through the years, changes in pronounciation and spelling have occurred, but approximately eighty percent of the English words are derived from Latin.
