Hare Susan Colquitt demonstrates the art of persuasive speaking. The broad English curriculum at Pallotti High—Literature, gram- mar, and creative writing—affords the students the opportunity of studying the works of the master and to develop their own creativ- ity. The field of literature is grow- ing in its importance due to the complexities of our society, for it is the art of communicating with our fellowmen. From appreciation of the great novels, poems, and essays of the past, we gain an insight of humanity and the en- couragement to continue fighting for the rights of men. The satisfy- ing effects of literature will be seen in all walks of life, for it “is the breath and finer spirit of all knowl- edge.”—Wordsworth Diagraming is included in the Fresh- man Grammar class. Language German (upper) and French (right) language students broaden their knowledge through varied study helps and activities. Pallotti High offers two language courses to its stu- dents—French and German. There is an ever in- creasing need for understanding in the world today, and through the knowledge of another man’s language we can reach him in a common bond of friendship. Starting in his Freshman year, a student may take four years of either French or German, and thereby become fluent in the language of his choice. Social Studies One of the basic requisites for becoming a good citizen today is a knowledge of the world’s history. Here at Pallotti, the courses in social studies are so designed as to give the students a well-rounded conception of the world, its prob- lems and its hopes, that they will be better equipped to take over. From Ancient and Modern History students receive important knowledge of the past and gain the wisdom to guide their own future. In American History, they learn of the foundation and development of our country. Finally, the course on Problems of Democracy teaches the students the necessary understanding and knowledge that is essential in governing. American History fosters deep and abiding patriotism in the hearts of all our students. The Modern World History class takes an open-book test under the supervision of Miss Lane. Discussion Groups are a vital part of Problems of Democracy. 40 Science The facilities at Pallotti provide the student with an easier understanding of the fundamental principles of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Through experimentation and lec- tures, students learn to think scientifically, and get their first real introduction to inductive reasoning. For some, an excellent basis for further studies in this modern field is gained: for others, it is merely a new and different ex- perience. “Mumm—that’s good. May I have some more? The advanced biology students explore the realms of human anatomy. The figures held by Jean Crump are used to explain some of the theoretical aspects of Math. Math Pallotti’s Mathematics Department offers quite an extensive program in keeping with the importance of this field in our scientific age. After learning the basic principles of algebra and plane geometry, students may advance to a higher level. There they are introduced to solid geometry, trigonometry, an- alytic geometry, and calculus. Each level mastered in the science of numbers prepares the students for a better understanding of our mod- ern world. 41 Business The Business students at Pallotti enjoy a wide range of courses. Under the direction of Sister Constance they prepare for the ever-growing de- mands of the business world by learning the funda- mental skills of typing and shorthand. To balance these courses in turning out excellent secretaries, the students also receive training in business rela- tions, salesmanship, accounting, and filing. Future secretaries develop skills in their new language of shorthand. What are these students up to now with the calculating machines? These serious-minded young bookkeepers spend a normal period with Sister Constance. 42 Gym What's this supposed to he? Included in the curriculum this year is Physical Education. It is not only important to be sound mentally, but also physically. Twice a week the students head for the gym for vigorous exercise. Now that the initial aches and pains are past the students have plunged into the spirit of active participation. But scheduled exercise does not comprise all of gym. Healthy competition and good sportsmanship, developed here in gym, help to build a strong mind and body. Music The Music Class is a new addition to our course of studies. Now the halls resound with fragments of the clas- sics from Beethoven to Basie, and corales to broadway favorites. The students have learned to appreciate music and to compose simple melo- dies. Music is the voice of the soul, and many students have learned to express themselves through it. The musical talent of the students is brought forth by Sister Parvula. 43 ORGANIZATIONS C.S.M.C. Pallotti’s Catholic Student Mission Crusade, a chapter of the national organization, has as its threefold aim—prayer, study, and sacrifice for the missions. Students have the opportunity to aid the missions by supporting various activities. Pat Ray, Sec.; Johnny DiPietro, Pres.; Karen McCahill, Treas.; Tim Craven, V. Pres. C.A. Club The aim of the Catholic Action Club is to spread God’s love through mutual charity and to increase each member’s faith. Catholic Action is the overflow of Religion into our daily lives. It is the desire to spread the joy and happiness one has found through his faith to others. Paladin Club The Paladin Club is a study club instituted as the honor society of the C.S.M.C. Its purpose is to pro- vide the opportunity for interested students to learn more about the missions. Discussions of articles from the “Shield”, and of topics of current interest, along with guest speakers help to keep the meetings interesting as well as informative. Our principle field of study this year is “Ecumenism”. Sharon Smith, Sec.; Mike Morrison, Pres.; Ann Spears, V. Pres. 45 Der Deutsche Verein Kathy Deutsch Sec.; Michael Kuril wara. Treas.: and Mike Ryan, Pres. One of the oldest clubs in Pallotti, the Deutsche Verein is de- voted to promotin'; a deeper understanding of German customs and folk lore. The members, who must have taken at least one year of German, view films from the Embassy and play various games in German. The publication of a newspaper, trips to places of interest, and the annual Christmas party are other activities of the club. U Alliance Fran aise L’Alliance Francaise offers to its members an excellent opportunity to more fully understand and appreciate French cultures and customs. The members are kept ahreast of the club's actions through its monthly newspaper, “Accent sur la France . Field trips, lectures, and films make membership in the club a memorable and profitable experience. Barbara Koontz. Treas.: Cheryl Marrow, V. Pres.; Ann Spears, Ed.; Jane Castiglia. Pres.; Frances Byrnes, Sec. 46 Smath Club The Smath Club, a comparatively new organization at Pallotti. is designed to foster a deeper interest in science and mathematics. Under the direction of Sister Karen, Club members find new uses and pleasures in these two growing fields. Mary Mundson, Sec.; Jane Castiglia,Treas.; Sarah Hocker, Pres. Business Club The Business Club of Pallotti High School is com- posed of students who are interested in the many opportunities offered in the business world. The aim of the club is to prepare for future employment, and to acquaint ourselves with modem day office equip- ment. Janice Anderson, V. Pres.; Kathy Cunningham, Pres.; Peggy Hyland, Treas.; Wanda Watts, Sec. 47 Student Council The Student Council is an organization representing the students of Pallotti. The aim of the Council is to promote better understanding and cooperation between the faculty and the student body. The or- ganization also raises funds for the school by publishing the Student Directory and the annual Inspiration, a yearbook com- posed of students’ literary works. Susan Colquitt, Sec.; Richard Janiak, Pres.; Sister M. Aurca, Moderator; Tim Craven, V. Pres.; Jean Crump, Treas. Library Club The purposes of the Library Club are to assist our librarian, Mrs. Cusick, and give students an opportunity to learn the pro- cedures of keeping books in order. It is a satisfying and rewarding experience. 48 Pallottinian Editor—Pat Brown Business Manager—John DiPietro Asst. Editors—Jean Crump Kathy Cunningham Rita Griffin Connie Johnson Joanne Lower Cheryl Marrow Kathy Thackeray In recording the activities and events of the ’64 school year, we have endeavored to present a true and interesting picture of Pallotti. We wish to express our thanks and appreciation to the Sisters and stu- dents for their co-operation in turning out the 1964 Pallottinian. We hope you will enjoy these remembrances of your high school years. Pal-O-Times “The Pal-O-Times” is the official publication of Pallotti High School. Linder the guidance of Sister Bernadita, the paper is issued six times a school year by a team of editors, reporters, and typists. Its aim or goal is that of any great newspaper—to present the news or happenings of greatest interest to the school. 49 Music Club The Music Club was organized at the beginning of this year’s school term. Its aims are to de- velop a better understanding of music in its many forms and from this to foster a greater appreciation for its different types. Beside our regular meetings there are guest speakers, op- portunities to attend concerts, and films on different phases of music. Mary Claire Prior, Treas.; Frances Byrnes, Pres.; Velma Nickens, Sec. The Glee Club, under the direction of Sister Parvula, provides our students with a chance to discover their mu- sical talents. This year, the chorus entertained the student body with old and new Christ- mas carols, and the members composed the school song. The Glee Club is a combina- tion of pleasure and learning. Heigh-ho! sing heigh-ho! unto the green holly; Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly: Then, heigh-ho, the holly! This life is most jolly! SHAKESPEARE Miss P.H.S. RITA GRIFFIN i' ' SHARON SMITH i it JACQUELYN CUSICK Rita makes a lovely Miss P.H.S., doesn’t she? Her crowning was the highlight of the annual New Year’s Dance sponsored by the Seniors. Starlit Fascination Last Year’s Prom was the social highlight of the entire school year. The theme was Starlit Fascination and the gym was transfigured into a realm of stars and moonbeams for the affair. The decorations coupled with the normal romance of prom night, made it one of the best formal dances Pallotti has ever had. The crowned Queen and King of the Prom were Gloria Macey and George Parks. In attendance were Pat Brown, Kevin McCahill, Frances Byrnes and Johnny DiPietro. All were lovely in the splendor of their court. It is for sure, however, that every couple there felt like a queen and king in the fascination of the night. Prom Committee The Juniors began early this year preparing for the Senior Prom. Planning dances, as a means of raising money, kept the Dance Committee busy and gave the school social life a wonderful lift. All of us look forward to this year’s Prom with interest and excitement. A new experience for all was participating in the Bizentine Liturgy. 54 C.S.M.C. Workshop One of the important activities of the C.S.M.C. this year was the workshop on Ecumenism held at Seton High School. Pallotti students joined with hoys from St. Anslems School in presenting a panel on Buddhism. The language departments contributed to the evening’s entertainment with popular songs from France and Germany. Here the French classes demonstrate their skill with “Dominique.” Among the various instrumentals, Mickey Baile entranced everyone with a delightful piano solo. Variety Shore Our deep appreciation to Sister M. Bernadita was shown by the presentation of a dozen red roses to her after the show. Many guitars appeared through- out the show. Among them Sharon Smith and Chris Clapper rated the best. Football Intramural football was introduced for tile first time into the sports curricula. The Thanksgiving Classic, offering a new experience for the students at Pallotti, brought the season to a thrilling close. Ready for Action! Boys' Basketball After a fast, exciting season the Celtics emerged the victors, displaying excellent team- work and fine shooting. All the boys are to he commended for their “All-American’' participation. The Wildcats finally took the championship after a long, hard battle. It was really inspiring to sec such excellent cooperation and fine sportsmanship which every girl displayed throughout the season. Snapshots No, I WONT get off this table! Oh!!! Fun. Fun, Fun . . .
