I was asked to write this To tell you how we rate, So here goes the poem Of the class of forty-eight. He was basketball manager, A regular handy man, If you want something done, Just ask Carl, he can. One of the girls is filled With lots of humor and wit, When it comes to the Recorder, Gloria does her bit. We always called him Bud- Forest is his real name. He has journeyed with us Four years just the same. This girl is meek as a lamb, But if you want zeal and might When it comes to politics, Patty is ready to fight. Florence gets a lot of A's, When she can memorize it allg But when it comes to speed in typing She is liable for a fall. HI love ath1etics,H says Paul, nBut most of my love I am Giving to a junior girl By the name of Margaret Ann.u Mrs. Lanich was She ably led l r Anna has a temper She can't always keep in hand, She was in the student council, The chorus, and the band. Mary was our Recorder editor, She was good in studies toog After graduation is over, We think a wedding is due. Bob came here when a junior, He was our basketball starg In the field of professional ball He aims to travel far. Jay goes all out for sports, He was center of our team Always had something to say Friendly he did seem. He was on the basket ball team, Had them on the go, He has a joking manner, It's no one else but Joe. Jack sang in the chorus, Helped in playing ball, Filled his place in senior row In the good old study hall. Wilbur likes the fields and tractors, He'll make a farmer good, Helping to supply the world With the much needed food. our advisor, us through She taught us literature and English Led our activities too. flew UWM! gg .nf -4 wx.-gg g :snag -5.2 3.-1. gs. gf.: 5. Looking into his face, I perceived that he had such a benevolent, intelligent countenance that I stepped up to him and introduced myself. He received me pleasantly, and after conversing a few minutes, I re- marked upon the ribbons he was wearing. WWe1l,W said he, 'I'l1 tell you about them, I'm celebrating the anniver- sary of my graduation day. You see my class graduated from the Palestine High School on May 19, 1948, just fifty-six years ago, and that is why I am wearing our class co1ors.' 'Indeed,' commented I. 'And I suppose your class was quite up to the av- erage.' 'Up to the average,' he almost shouted. 'We1l, I should say we were. Why, it was the most remarkable class that ever graduated from the finest High School in the land. Now just listen while I tell you a thing or two about that class. 'I remembered 12 members were enrolled in the first grade of Palestine school in the year of 1936. Our teacher was Miss Myers. Among the students which remained in the opening class through twelve years are Jay Mikesell, Anna Dill and Patty Wilt. Joe and Carl Graham Joined our class during the lat- ter part of our first year. I imagine something Joe will remember for a long time about his school days, was the first day he attended our school. We went on a hike and when we arrived back at school, Joe was missing. So after going back to the place of our hike, we found Joe sitting on a tree stump crying because he was lost. Our second grade was so large that it had to be divided into two classes with one group under Miss Adavier and the other one under Miss Bayman. Mr. Noll was our third grade teacher. Although some of our classmates left during that year, Juanita Lindamood came to fill their place in our grade. Mrs. Dille was our fourth grade teacher. When we started our fifth year in school, we had a new teacher, Mr Stephens and some new pupils also. They were Gloria Stevens, Betty Laux and Joan Sharp. Mr. Stephens left about the middle of the year and Mrs. Elliott, who has been teaching hezesince then came. She was also our sixth grade teacher. CCont1nued on the next pagel I ' ' ' -r 1 A ,, . She remained to teach us during our eighth grade. Everyone will remember when we took our eighth grade test, because we took it a day earl- ier than we had planned. It was such a surprise, that we d1dn't have time to be nervous. On the test Joe Graham got first place, Anna Dill got second place and Patty Wilt third place. We were now on our way to high school. Our freshman year in high school was a very memorable year. NkLMcNemar was our class advisor. We had 19 members, among them were Wilbur Bevins, Jack Collins, Florence Garber, Paul Ayette and Forest Archie. On initiation day we came to school all dressed up. The girls wore their dresses wrong side out and backwards, no makeup, a lot of jewelry, hair in braids. The boys wore makeup, no shoestrings, shirts wrong side out and backwards. The initiation party was held at Helen Lowenslager's home. Mrs. McNemar was our class advisor during our sophomore year. Gloria Stevens came back to finish her school years. Another new student, Mary Fellers entered our class. We ordered our class rings the latter part of the year and were very anxious to receive them. When we came back in the fall to start our junior year, we found some new teachers one of them was our advisor, Mr. Frazer. We also received our class rings the first day, of which we were very proud. Some of our classmates had left us during the summer vacation. Our play was given November 19: it was, 'NOW Y0U'RE TM-KING . Everyone will remember what fun we had getting the play ready for presentation. After our play was over, two classmates left our group, Juanita Lindamocd, who decided to get married and soon afterwards Betty Laux chose the same course. But Bob Shields came to take his place among our class. We sold things at the basketball games, and everyone enjoyed doing that very much. Then we took the seniors on a trip, May 13, to Cincinnati. In the fall of '47, we came to take our seats by the windows, for which we had been striving for a long time. Our class advisor was Mrs. Lanich. We had our pictures taken on November 5rd, 1947, and received them on December 19. We cho ae our class play, the name was THE NIGHT OWL : it was given on April 16,E This last year was tinged with sadness by the thought of leaving the teach- ers with whom we had become such friends, and the dear old High School itself. It was at that time that I made my resolve always to wear my class colors on the anniversary of my graduation day. So, although I have forever Ieft the dear place in person, I always feel myself part of it in spirit on each ann1versay.' As he concluded, the old man gazed fondly at his class colors, and ssging him thus lost in memory, I bade him a kindly farewell and went on my way. 141' Z-A' It was the summer of l958 and on a beach along Lake Michigan we met. We had not seen each other for ten years, yet we, Mary and Glor1a, recognized each other as old classmates. We were very surprised and so we began asking questions concerning one another. Gloria asked, 'How are you, Mary? Gee, 1t's a surprise to see you in Michigan. What have you been doing for the last ten years?u Mary answered, nBob and I were married in June of '48, Bob has a hardware store of his own and I was his secretary for a while. Later I decided that my place was bit and I store for know that in the home we have at the edge of Greenville. I entertain quite a enjoy our twin daughters, Connie Lou and Donna Sue. We closed the two weeks to come to Michigan for our vacation. But, Gloria, I d1dn't you lived around here. What have you been doing with yourself?n Gloria replied, 'I went to college and learned to be a com ercial teacher and I taught two years in a school in Dayton. But then my dream man proposed and I couldn't bring beach. pared Mary, refuse, so we came to Michigan to live. I thought that I would my son, who is three years old, down to the carnival being held at the My husband is working, and after I get my house cleaned and dinner pre- for the evening, there is not much for me to do the rest of the day. Oh, I just remembered about the other eleven classmates we had in '48. Do you know what they are doing now?n 'No, really, I don't. You see I am kept quitabusy with my children and home. I've heard rumors that some of them are living around the vicinity of Palestine, but I don't know what they are doing. But say, Gloria, this morning I was wandering around the carnival ground and I noticed an extremely beautiful gypsy. We can n0h, Mary, can't Bob go and we can 'Oh no, Bob will keep the children So we took the children to Bob and It was a very strange tent and it had a what we wanted forty-eighters let us read it sit quietly so go and ask her about the rest of the class. Joe never found the girl of his choice but it looks as if he is still looking. Joe's brother, Carl, who was the general handy-man around Palestine during his high-school days, now lives in Washington D. C. with his wife. The school just about went out of control after Bonesy left, but finally managed to re- gain its control again. nBonesyn always wanted to be a draftsman. He finally got his wish and now has a patent for a machine. Jack Collins went to aviation school and learned all about flying. Then under his directions, a small airport was set up between Longtown and Palestine. Now he's teaching some of the local farmers to fly their private planes and heli- copters so they can spray their farms with insecticide for bugs and they spray their farms with water when 1t's too dry. Because of Jack's shyness, it 1sn't surprising that he isn't married, but then there are rumors of his engagement to Trudy Cross from Battle Creek, Michigan. Florence Garber married a red-head: but wait, doesn't he look like one of the forty-eighters? His facial expression is so familiar, oh, so he's Wilbur Bevins. Florence had said that she wanted a red-head, but Wilbur was a brunette. Madam Zenda Vesta explained that Wilbur had dyed his hair to satlsfy Flossie Cher pet name.D Wilbur went to school for two years after he graduated and spe- cialized in farming. Florence stayed at home and helped her folks while she waited for him. When they married, Mr. Garber gave them his largest farm as a wedding present. Now they are getting along nicely with their cows, chickens, and little Bevins. The children were very cute with long curly hair, but good- ness, don't they have red complexions? Oh, now we remember they must have in- herited Florence's ability to blush. Mr. and Mrs. Bevins' little girl, Eileen, just started to Palestine and she must have inherited Florence's intelligence also, because Miss Adavier is considering promoting her to the second grade. Of course, the reason for this may be that she falls out of her seat when she looks at that cute little boy that sits in front of her. Forest Archie appeared in his same old happy-go-lucky manner, and evidently he's had success also, because he was dressed in finery and was driving a '58 C Buick. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that he'd taken a trip to California to visit his auntg and while on that trip he discovered that he en- joyed traveling, so he became a traveling salesman. He is still singleg but ta- king a peep in his address book, we still found towns such as Dayton, Muncie, and Q Continued on the next page 5 ..... ,-- ,. y... , ,,,,,,,4 ,,,4,,l,,-,A,, ,,.-...,.-,,. Maybe some time in the near future he may take his choice and buy a diamond for one of them. It looks as if Patty Wilt finally did win out and go to a beautieians' school. She now has a beauty parlor in her home in Greenville. Patty is mar- ried and has a little boy named Ronnie Lee. Anna Dill had been her helper, but Anna married and moved back to Palestine. Anna has a baby girl named Sharon. Patty and Anna always said they were going to be old maids and live together and have a dog. Oft times people change their minds and Madam Zenda Vesta said that they really did. Madam Zenda Vesta says that the athlete of the class of '48 is still going strong in athletics. He is playing in the outfield for the New York Giants. It looks as if he met a girl by traveling around the country. She is short and has long black curly hair. It also looks as if they have two small children, a little boy, Johnny and a little girl, Janie. We imagine you have guessed who this is. Yes, it is Bob Shields. Madam Zenda Vesta looks into her crystal ball to see what Jay Mikesell is doing. She says that he traveled around the country after graduation and fin- ally eame back to Palestine. Madam Zenda Vesta sees that Jay met and married a blonde-headed girl on his travels. They bought a farm near Palestine and they are living very happily with their two children, a little boy aged 5 years and a little girl 5 months old. Paul Ayette owns an experimental farm in Missouri. Of course, when he went he took Maggie with him and.they are getting along very nicely. They have a lot of hired hands on the farm so this permits them to take care of the business that goes with their 400 room hotel in St. Louis. Paul is also business mana- ger of several local theaters. They asked Santa Claus for a baby boy, so per- haps he'll bring it for Christmas. As we left the tent, we were very happy to know that our classmates had been successful. We strolled over to the Wilsons' beach umbrella so that Gloria could get her son. Mary promised to go to visit Gloria's home before leaving D for Greenville and we also promised to contact our other classmates soon. Ann Wesley, a young play wright, is trying to get inspiration for a new play from one of those trad- itionally haunted houses. On this night, she entertains several unexpected guests. Her first guest to arrive was James Gray, a producer. He liked Ann very much but could never seem to get around to expressing himself. Du:ing the course of the evening two men came in with a kidnapped victim. This was Ken Grant and William Wimple with their victim, Daisy Linden. They figure out a plan to make the other people believe that Ken and Daisy are man and wife. Then each one tells a different story and this makes everyone wonder just what is the truth and it takes a hard pull to get them out of it. Another couple, June Allen and Jack Benton, stop in to get out of the rain. They are engaged to be married. Patsy, a runaway from the circus, lives with Ann and falls in love with Ken. It is said that if the old clock ever struck twelve, someone would die. There was a mysterious trunk that led into a secret room. All this is dis- covered upon investigating some of the mysterious happenings. Mrs. Karley and her husband, George, help along the spooky atmosphere by prying into the safe. But all ends well and the mystery ends. Carl Graham, our stage manager, did a very capable job in producing all the intricate stage effects. His helpers were Wilbur Bevins and Forest Archie. Soon after getting started we had a class election. Herman Hammontree was elected president, Doyle Burns vice-president, Larry Fisher secre tary-treasurer, Betty Grim reporter, and Diana Wenrick and Russell Garber were elected for student council members. We have the same advisor, but her name has been changed to Mrs. Koons. Four weeks after school started the sophomores decided it was time to initi ate us freshmen. On initiation day the girls and boys of the freshmen class had to wear their clothes queer ways and be the sophomores servants. That evening the initiation party was held at Helen House's home. The sophomores really put us through!!! After we were initiated we were treated to hot dogs, potato chips and pop. We then played games the rest of the evening. When the basketball season came round the following boys went out for bas- ketball: Bill Rich, Raymond Ritz, Doyle Burns, Eugene Cloyd, Lowell Dill, Dick Mikesell, Herman Hammontree, and Lowell House. Bill Rich made the varsity team. In January, February, and March the high school and junior high had an inter-class tournament. The freshmen boys won over the sophomores by a score of 18 to 12. The freshmen girls lost to the seniors by a score of 15 to 9. We have some honor students in our class. Their names are: Diana Wenrick, Lora Lee Parent, Larry Fisher, and Russell Garber. A party was held at the school in April. Betty Grim--I want to be a housewife. Sally Davis--A beauty operator or housewife. Lora Lee Parent--I would like to be a stenographer. Mary Heffner--Housewife, I guess. Virgie Rehmert--Oh, I don't know. Kay Teaford--Airplane pilot. Patty Lindamood--I want to be a stewardess on Kay's plane. Evelyn Neal--A housewife. Diana Wenrick--Teacher, maybe. Doyle Burns--I'm going to be a farmer. Eugene Cloyd--Get married and farm. Bill Rich--I want to go to college to be a coach. Raymond Ritz--Help dad. Dick Epps--Try to keep out of work. Larry Fisher--Hmm. It's hard to tell but I'll probably farm. Herman Hammontree--I'm going to farm. Dick Mivesell--I think I'll farm. Russell Garber--It's hard to tell. Lowell Dill--I'm going to be a farmer. Lowell House--A farmer or a musician. Harold Laux--I think I'll farm. ..-....-...-...... .......-,..- fn --..-,,. First thing we students saw that we will all remember was a brand new superintendent, Mr. Innis. All of us had refreshed minds, different books, and new opportunities so things really began to happen. These incidents that follow have been recorded for fear that we might forget September 12 19 October 1 17 25 31 November 3 6 10 ll 26 27 k 28 December l We had our first assembly which consisted of showing moving pictures of the Junior-Senior Trip of last May. Those green, green freshmen were initiated. The boys were really hubba hubba in their high-heeled shoes and the lip- stick that was smeared on their faces. The girls definitely had a nNew Lookn in those dresses turned wrong side out and a big gum boot on one foot only. You would have envied them if you had seen their costly necklaces. CDon't you dare tell them that we let you know their precious jewels were straight from Mother Earth's sources. In fact they were in the form of raw material yetlj Kirk Bennett gave a very dramatic presentatio entitled 'The Man Who Knew L1ncoln'. After the show he displayed articles of the Civil War and the most famous article was the remnant of the boot which John Wilkes Booth wore when he assassinated Lincoln. Glen Martin, the magician, was here and on this day we dis- covered our talented musicians, Jay Mikesell and Eugene Cloyd. They played their instruments to try to get Phoebe, the snake, to rise out of the basket. Results ------------- Phoebe arose but goodness gracious if you could have heard that music you'd have risen and flew. The Annual Bean Supper was held. Mrs. Elliot, our fifth and sixth grade teacher had the lucky chance on the desk. Bingo was played and the first basketball game of the sea- son was played wlth the Alumni. Sob---They won. Mr. Innis married Dorothy Downey of Lebanon, Ohio. The dignified Seniors came to school dressed in their Sunday- Go-To-Meetin' Clothes and ventured to Versailles to Riggs Studio so they could get their graduation pictures taken. The boys really proved their dignity by allowing the girls to find them on the curb of Main Street with little red tops, whistling balloons and two quarts of a--er--uh--a CIDER. Junior Class Play, 'Say It with Music' Mrs. Reigle had charge of the Armistice Day Program. Rev. Schlechty gave us a talk and we had a silent prayer for those who were killed in the armed forces during the war. Donna Fellers gave her Prince of Peace Declamation. By the way, Donna won the contest from here, too. School holiday for Armistice Day The fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades presented the Thanksgiving program. They gave a play and we all agreed that those Indians were very frightening. Hm mm m ml Thanksgiving Vacation Movie entitled nCorr1gedor'. lContinued on next pagej r .f IH V f I.. ,. Ev E, 7. Mr. Frazer was appointed acting superintendent, Mr. Brown from Arcanum took over the physics and mathmatics classes, and Mr. Slagle became coach. Movie entitled 'Turf Boyn. Our Christmas program was given by the first, second, third, and fourth grades. They gave an operetta entitled nSanta Saves A Day . We also had group singing of carols and then we exchanged gifts. The seniors got a big Christmas present this day, too. Do you want to know what it was? Well, those graduation pictures they received today drove all of the mice away By an act early for so surely they're entitled to driver's licenses. of the school board, school was dismissed three days the Christmas vacation. School re-opens from Christmas vacation. Movie entitled uwilliam Telln. Mrs. Lanich organized the first Latin Club of P. H. S. The general science and home economics classes went to Greenville to tour the Co-op Dairy. A picture of these students appeared in the Dayton Daily News. Mr. Innis returned and we all were happy because of his speedy recovery. We had a puppet show entitled 'The Tinderboxn. I'm sure we found nmastery of the strings' very interesting. Mrs. Koons had charge of University gave a speech Archie gave a recitation Patricia Wilt and Janice a program and a student from Miami about forecasting weather. Marilyn named nThe Youngest In The Family . Deeter presented musical selections. The Farmers' Institute was held here in the school auditorium. We were excused from classes to go to the first session. Mrs. Brownfield of Columbus, Mr. Evans of Cedarville, and Marie Wright, the Home Demonstration Agent for Darke County gave us some very interesting talks. Movie ent1tlednHeart of New Yorkn. We had an animal show given by The United States Society of Zoology. Many rare animals were shown to us and among these was a pony that really had good nhorse sense'. He proved this to us by counting and answering yes and no questions. A Chicken Supper was held in order to.help raise money for band suits. After supper there were basketball games. S159 and many bruises from falling plaster were cleared. Movie entitled nLittle Miss Mollyn. The Latin Club sponsored a play named URomin' With The Romans? A minstrel was given also to raise money for band suits. Q226 was cleared and anyone who saw it agreed to its success. The basketball tournament begins and we played the opening game with Union City. We won 59-40. We played a tournament game with Jackson. We won 55-46. Tournament game with Arcanum. We lost 44-42.
