We, the Arc Light Staff of 1961, have tried to cap- ture the highlights of the 1960-61 school year at P. H. S. Before we launch- into our account, we venture a few words of explanation about the book and its features. Instead of the usual section of advertising at the end of the book, we have placed the names of our adver- tisers at the bottoms of pages throughout the Arc Light. Two complete pages of advertisements are included at the request of a few firms which prefer the old method of presentation. This change has given the Staff thirty pages more to use for pictures and copy about the school year. As you follow our typical -- and, thank goodness, sometimes not-so-typical!-- characters through the wilds of thirty-six weeks at Palestine High school, we hope that, forgiving unintentional errors, you will en- joy again all the sometimes ridiculous, sometimes try- ing, always memorable moments of P. H. S., 1961.

The Arc Light Staff of 1961 proudly dedicates its efforts for the year to Mr. M, D. Stewart, prin- cipal of Palestine High School. During the last few weeks of school, the student body was shocked and saddened to learn that Mr. Stewart would be forced to leave for medical rea- sons, and to resign his post as principal. Although they later heard the announcement that he would return as Latin teacher, giving up the post which he had held for thirty years because he could not ex- pect to be back ini' time to begin the registration work which takes place in the summer, the students were still sorry that he would no longer guide the school through its year. As thanks for the many years in which he served P. H. S. as principal, and in hopes that he will rea- lize the love and respect held for him by his stu- dents, whether he works as principal or teacher, we of the 1961 Arc Light salute Mr. M. D. Stewart by dedicating the 1961 annual to him.
