Old prejudices were put aside to form a new tradition of unity and pride to be handed down. 5 OPENING Accustomed to yesterday’s tra- ditions . . . now traditions must change. From wisdom and knowledge of the past .... we build new traditions. 7 9 10 STUDENT LIFE 12 13 STUDENT LIFE 14 For the Seniors at P.H.S. three years of hard work and good times are coming to a close. Memories of friends, pep rallies and moving to a new school will never be forgotten. The class of ’78 is proud to he the first graduating at P.H.S. We Seniors are the beginning of new traditions for future students. Our Senior class officers are Cara Morgante, president; Jerome Wilkinson, vice-president; Beth McMath, secretary; Wynelle Tarte, treasurer. Five years ago the friendly characters of Walt Disney World initiated Grad Night in honor of the Graduating Seniors. Disney World opened its doors to all grads on this one and special night. Clos- ed to non-graduates and older tourists, the attractions were open- ed from Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. to Sunday morning at 2:00 a.m. Grad Night is very memorable experience for Seniors, one of their last memories of high sc hool life. The officers worked very hard planning projects to raise enough money for grad night. Beginning with a Valentine’s Dance in February, a midnight movie, paper drive, and the traditional Senior Show are among the pro- jects for the class. Study, study, study, was a senior way of life. Preparing for the future faced each member of the Senior class. College has always been one of the major concern of many Seniors. Problems about where to go, finances, scholarships, and SAT scores were only a few of the problems facing Seniors who wanted to enter college after high school. Whether it was deciding on a job or going to college Seniors needing advice found it readily given in our Guidance Office. The school year 1977-1978 has proved to be a unique and exciting one for Seniors. Indeed the best way to describe it was a new ex- perience for the Senior class. The class in ’78 is great and second to none. Greg Williams acts as if he could care less while, Ken W iggs goes to Mrs. Crouch for help in class. uniors The Class of ’79 spent their year in the traditional manner by earning money to spend on the annual Junior Prom. Their first project was selling Christmas ornaments in December. Among the other projects planned are decal and magazine sales. Planning the project this year are Bryan Alford, president; Kelley Right, vice-president; Felicia Seabury, secretary; Shelia Bennett, treasurer. In every Junior circle questions about class rings were asked. The first deci- sion Juniors made was whether to buy a ring or not. Some students chose not to buy a class ring, but most did. After weeks of waiting, the rings arrived. A long standing tradition was revived with the delivery of the rings. To complete this ritual a person found seventy-nine different people to turn his ring. The Sophomore class at South and Central started working together last year as Freshmen. Resulting from their hard work last year the Class of ’80 brought S1200 dollars to the new school, making them the richest class. This year they plan to have a dance on Saint Patrick’s Day. They are earning money now so they can have a super prom in their Junior year. They had a little more freedom than they did as Freshmen. But unlike upperclassmen, Sophomores had to get required courses out of the way before choosing electives. Among the required courses were English II and a math and science credit. For the first time the members of the Sophomore class became of age to drive and they packed the Driver’s Ed classes. Freshman were forced to fit the patterns of high school life which included quite a bit of razzing from upperclassmen. Changes and Challenges was picked by Student Coun- cil to be our theme. We started the week with a parking lot pep rally on Monday morning. Monday was also Halloween Costume day. Witches, goblins, and Mar- tians were seen everywhere on campus. Tuesday was 50’s day. Both students and teachers pull- ed out their old jeans and jackets and joined the nostalgia. W ednesday was the only day in the entire school year a student could wear a hat legally. Black Day was Thursday morning, the slaughter of the Deland Bulldogs. That night was the Pep Bally for the Panthers and a funeral for the Bulldogs. Hot dogs and cokes were given to students who donated to UNICEF. Friday the big day had come at last. Downtown Main Street was full of floats and chaos. Tri-Hi-Y won first place with FHA second and Interact third. The Panthers stomped the Deland Bulldogs 14-0 Friday night. Sandee Becker was crowned Homecoming Queen. Linda Hayes, junior attendant; Deanna Davis, sophomore attendant; and Kim W'atts, freshmen atten- dant. Catura played at the dance afterwards. Thanks to the hardwork of Student Council and the cooperation of the faculty. In a few short weeks the Council brought a successful Homecoming to the students of P.H.S. They collected S65 from students on campus for the UNICEF Drive. A Christmas Banquet was held in December for Council members and their dates. Tararies played at the dance after the dinner. In January the Council donated their time and money to the county- wide cancer society. A lot of work goes into just this one project. Members also put together the Student Directory. The club is made up of 90 members. Sec. 173 VICA Can Do and Know How Vocational Industrial Clubs of America is a national organization to help young people develop leadership and skills. VICA members compete from area to national levels in timed trade-skills contest. In competition a VICA member may rebuild brakes or grind valves, tear down and reassemble a gasoline engine, lay a brick wall, hang a door, weld a frame, trouble shoot a television set, or enlarge a houseplan to scale. These students usually graduate with honors. The National Honor Society sponsors two students each year to com- pete for a nation wide NHS scholarship which amounts up to one thousand dollars. Palatka High School has more members than any other high school in Florida. Varsity Club raises money to buy jackets for lettermen in all sports at Palatka High School. Members then proudly wear their hard-earned emblems. 1) The offense of the Palatka Panthers foot- hall team tries to gain yardage for a first down. 2) The 1977-78 Varsity Club members. 178 Training Students for the World Ahead There are two programs of Vocational Office Education. One is Secretarial Administrative Management, a three hour block. The purpose of this course is to train students in secretarial skills so that they may get and hold a job as an administrative secretary. The clerical management group is a two hour block in which students learn the necessary basic business and employment ability skills to help them find jobs as clerk typists, file clerks, bookkeepers, etc. 1) The Secretarial VOE class of 1st, 2nd and 3rd period. 2) Mrs. Smith's 1st and 2nd period. Clerical class. 3) The 4th, 5th, and 6th period Secretarial VOE. 4) The 3rd and 4th period class of Clerical VOE. After several years with no chorus classes offered. Choral music has returned. Three choral (passes are now available with more classes being planned. One class of theory is also offered to students who wish to pursue more deeply the fundamentals of harmony. The performing group is composed of students from the three classes offered. The chorus plans to present several programs this year.
