Business Manager Gerald Merwin, Editorial Asst. Bonnie Beth Frye, Business Manager Our Guest . . . Elpi Karayannopoulou —no matter how you say it—is love of life, love of country. From her first football game to the last farewell, she has enriched our lives. Those who have come to know her have also come to know themselves. Her love for her own country has made us re-examine our own love of country. During her brief stay she has lived her philosophy of life: live and love every moment of life; always be happy never sad. Somehow Elpi— this year's foreign exchange student from Greece—has left this spirit of life with us. LIBRARIANS: SEATED: Mrs. J. M. El- rod STANDING: Mrs. John R. Waters 115 The Smoke Signal went into its first full year of publication with a brand new look. Under the direction of Mrs. Banks, the journalism class produced a paper with new makeup, more art, and even better coverage than in its first year. And it was work. And report- ing's just a part of it. Ads had to be sold, pictures taken, records kept, leads written, copy read, and proof read again before press time. In between, the editor and as- sistant editor set up the pages of the paper. They had to determine placement of stories, sizes of pic- tures and check heads. But there was fun, too—get- ting out of class to sell ads, trips to the printer, groans for our mistakes, pride in a good story or a head with zing, and the longing to print some things which good judgment squelched. Few people realize the cost of one edition runs around $155 for six pages. Sales of the paper itself account for only about one- fifth of the return. The rest had to be made up in the sale of ads. Most of all, though, there was a certain pride in seeing a good paper published, and excitement in that first glance to see your own story in print. Left, Kathy Gale and Faye Allen look at copy with Bobby Bush, Editor ROW 1: Bobby Bush, Kathy Gale, Elpi Karayannopoulou, ROW 2: Brynn Newton, Pat Crews, Sandy Cason, Terri Roche, and Linda Carver.
