ALMA MATER Come and join in song together Shout with might and main Our beloved alma mater Sound her praise again. Lift the chorus, speed it onward Loud her praises tell Hail to thee, our alma mater Hail, Palatka, hail. High above the busy humming Of the bustling town Heard against the arc of heaven Looks she proudly down. Lift the chorus, speed it onward Loud her praises tell Hail to thee, our alma mater Hail, Palatka, hail. Palatka Senior Migh For your kindness . . . For your sincerity . . . From grades six through twelve they have fought, rejoiced, and shed tears together. Being the first complete products of Coaches Rabbit Smith and Billy Bennett, they compiled an impressive record of 17 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties in a period of two years of Varsity competition. Having finished their days of active participation in the sport, they can now fully appreciate the lasting values of working together as a team. Sharing both the hardships and honors which accom- pany football, they have created among themselves an inseparable bond. The greater the conflict, the more glorious the victory” is not always true. They have enjoyed many rich victories over con- flicts which could have been much greater had it not been for the consistently great coaching of Smith and Bennett. Now, with only memories to recapture the thrills of football, the seniors must join the ranks of the Has-Beens who sit on the sidelines now cheering, not playing, for the team which for so U-..U v.,u„ l°ng a time has been a large part of their lives. Whether they win or lose though, they can be proud of a fine season. “IS” Scores Five returning lettermen assured Coach Jim Holt’s Maroon basketball team of a winning season even before the first tip-off. The question how much winning was answered by the hands of Fate, hustle, and injuries. Fate took her toll by presenting them with six defeats. But hustle, lack of injuries, and an ample supply of ex- perience molded thirteen impressive victories. Therefore, the only established facts that we can print are the names of our opponents. The other facts that we give are purely speculation. Perhaps the greatest determining factor of success will be how well the pitchers come through. With no returning lettermen at this post, much will depend on our inexperienced pitchers. Probably, though, the six returning lettermen, Paul Williams, Art Nichols, Pete Rouw, Butch Willis, Gary Gondek, and Roy Livingston will take up any slack which the pitchers might make. Dash 880 Relay As the silken rustle of each purple curtain was pulled aside, we, the Seniors of 1959, found ourselves on the stage of life in a new scene each year. Twelve years ago we looked through the opening of these curtains for the first time. That was the September of 1947, and twelve long years loomed before our bewildered eyes. At first everything seemed to be confused, but we soon adapted ourselves to our new environment. The day had come when we had to leave our dear mothers and be under the rule of new faces. Remember our first books that we could read, Alice and Jerry? We put on a very nice Maypole play for Mr. Carter, our principal, who married one of our Senior sponsors, Mrs. Jo Carter. By the second grade, we were adjusted to our new life. We spent a lot of time on the slides and monkey bars. We had some pretty good rhythm bands that year. Suellen, Cupa Faye, and Suzanne had fun in them. Ralph joined our class that year. When the third year arrived, we were really growing up. Charles Hindman led a gang that was organized. It was discovered that we had some very good singers, so a boys’ choir was begun. Billy, Gene, and Dicky sang very well. Dianne joined us that year. As the fourth year rolled around Royce, Art. Hickie, Walter W. decided to do their bit for their country. They joined the school boy patrol. They planned our first hayride, and some of the couples were Richie and Charlotte, Gene and Jeanne, Reese and Levenia. Remember the time when we got our teeth painted? Jimmy was a newcomer that year. The fifth grade started like all the rest, with a bang? We all fought to be first in line to get our shots, didn’t we? Some of us started to work in the library too. Remember our trips to the naval base and to Gustafason’s Dairy? Hurrah! We finally got to go to the new school on Center Street. That year we started having boy and girl parties and dances. Ou.r new subject this year was square dancing. Royce and Gloria, Ralpfkand Maureen, Kenneth and Nancy Sue were dancing partners. Two new faces appeared on the scene—Edith and Butch, and from Hollister—Gwen, Jackie, and Bonnie. Our class was enlarged at the beginning of the seventh grade as Allyson, Georganne, Jim Bob. and Joseph joined us from East Palatka along with a few students from other areas. Remember Mrs. Byrd, the teacher who tried to teach us discipline? Frank couldn't seem to learn any; he went to the office 27 times. We welcomed Bob and Anne that year. In the eighth grade Katy and Pete joined us. Oh! We did have our troubles with Mr. Lane and Mrs. Elrod. Some couples that year were Freddie and Prissy. Joseph and Maureen. Royce and Dianne. It was that year that Butch took Peggy to the Sweetheart Banquet. We were really big shots because our football team had passed a small milestone—we were undefeated. Our activities throughout our high school career were neither dull nor slow. The four years of high school seemed to fly by. Our Freshman initiation didn't seem to go fast though. That day Mistory we were the best dressed students in the school. Some of us were cowboys and little boys and girls, while others thought they were in a circus or living in the 1920’s. Better times followed, however. All the girls waited anxiously to see who the Freshman waitresses would be. Jackie was our Freshman representative to the Junior- Senior Banquet. That year Carol joined us. Finally we were not the lowest” anymore. We were sophomores. We had some pretty rough classes. Do you girls remember the frogs in Biology class? Jim Bob was our Sophomore representative to the Junior-Senior Banquet. Since we were now beginning to come to know everybody, the love-bug came around. It hit Joseph and Helen, Maureen and Donnie, Peggy and George, Gail and Edward, and Gene and Nancy. That year four new girls came to our school—Marilyn. Kay, Joyce, and Janet. During our junior year we worked hard. Wc sold cookies, had a chicken supper, and put on a minstrel. Remember Silver Lake, Dianne? Lynda took on a lot of responsibility. Our theme for the Junior-Senior Banquet was Southern Moon. Jim Bob and Nancy were elected Mr. and Miss Junior. New students began attending classes with us, among whom were Blanchine, Thelma (Tex), Joyce, Cathy, and Jimmy. With feelings of fear, excitement, and joy we were fast approaching our Senior year. We watched the seniors of 1958 leave their Alma Mater, and the day came when we changed seats in the auditorium. Wc realized that we were the seniors now. The last of our twelve years of school dawned for us on August 27, 1958. We were to spend nine short months within the halls of our school as a united Senior group. As the year started we found ourselves rooting for our football team for the last time as high school students. Russell moved back from Georgia; during the Homecoming game he broke his leg. Kay was our Homecoming Queen. A few of the couples were Kay and John, Walter and Marilyn, Nancy and James, Cathy and Wayne, Penny and David, and Royce and Janet. Ruby and Ellen joined us. Now with mingled feelings of joy and sadness we will come to our Class Day—the day when we give up our position as Seniors to the long-awaiting class of I960; the day that tells us our high school days are almost at an end, and we shall be scattered to the four winds after graduation. There are a few events, such as our Prom and the Senior Class Play, that we can look forward to as we close this history and place it in the hands of our printers. Thus the curtains will fall upon a loyal class June, 1959. We shall go forth from our Alma Mater, but our spirit will live on at Palatka Senior High School. COMMITTEE Cathy Nebraske Joseph Hughes Art Nichols Maureen Emerson Frank Bush 21 Prophecy Here we are, the class of ’59, at our tenth reunion banquet. Many famous celebrities are here including ROYCE HOOD, mayor of our city. He is emcee for tonight, and will be introducing our guest speakers who are BILLY WALKER, President of the United States; REESE ALLEN, Governor of Florida; and ANNE HAMILTON, woman senator. In the background we hear soft music played by the famous PETE WRIGHT orchestra. Playing with Pete's band are JIMMY VAUGHN on the trumpets (two at a time) and LEE YEOMANS on the drums. Singing with the band is JEANNE BREWER. Also entertaining with the band is DAVID GRAY and his well-known bagpipe act. Seeing the newly weds, WALTER and MARILYN, in that dark corner is enough entertainment in itself! (You remember them—always holding hands in the hall.) Looking around the room we see that designer LEVENIA JENKINS has returned from Paris. She has just created the latest fashion, the sunken waist line, which looks devine on models RUBY MEISTER and LYNDA LITTLE. Hark! Who is that coming in the door in that slinky black majorette outfit? Why, it’s BETTY BROWN, that famous Conover Model! And following her is YVONNE CURRIE, famous burlesque queen. I wonder why WALTER WHI TAKER and KATY DEYO are looking at their meat so strangely; maybe their jobs as veterinarians have spoiled their appetites. Here's something we didn't expect!
