Augustus built his palace on the Palatine and began the palace system that claimed the hill. Older even than Rome is the rootword PA, meaning to protect and nourish, and a high military officer of the emperor became a Palatine. And the name traveled north to an electorate of the Holy Roman Empire, to a fertile area west of the Rhine where the administrator or ruler of a royal territory be- came known as a Palatine and the area was a Palatinate. Soon the people of this area were known as Palatines and they prospered. Later buffeted by wars not of their making and suffering per- secution because they were Protestants, the Palatines were ready to try the good life in the new world as promised by England irlagropaganda scattered along the ine. The Palatines sought refuge in England and help in getting to America. They were naturalized English citizens before they sailed for America, but they were not treated as such. Palatines began to arrive in New York in l708g and where they settled, they left German names. Unhappy with the unkept promises and the unproductive land given to them, they moved in 1712 and 1713 to the Schoharie, where they survived with help from Indians. There is a story that Indians of the Schoharie had given land on the Mohawk to English Queen Anne for the settlement of the Palatines. These people suffered greatly in England and New York, but in the Mohawk valley, they cleared land, built houses, schools and churches of logs, built mills and factories, raised cattle and made cheese. As they prospered, they built frame and stone structures. They lived in peace and prosperity for 40 years. Palatines became solid farmers and good soldiers when they were needed, and they were not the ones to leave New York after the Revolutionary war. It was their name that travelled to northern Illinois. The drawing depicts a spot along the Mohawk as Kathi Orr thinks it must have looked when the Palatines reached the Schoharie area.
