Young people wanted a place of their own to gather. however. and they campaigned through local newspapers and raised funds for a youth center. ln I946 the Pirate's Cove. sponsored by the Lion's Club. opened its doors. This fat little Pirate appeared on the cover of the 1959 Spotlight and through the pages of that book. He has remained at Palatine on book jackets and posters. a permanent gift from the staff of 1959.

Although the space in front of school and cars have changed drastically in the past I5 years, the attraction to them hasn't. RIGHT: A car in 1960. as well as today, was often a necessity for getting to work or going places with friends. BELOW: Last year brought lengthened lunch periods, and shorter days forjuniors and seniors. The main entrance was often cluttered with people taking advantage of a sunny day to go out to eat or leaving early for home or work. BOTTOM LEFT: Students relaxing on the large stretch of grass in front of the school, now covered by the newest addition. The tranquil scene of 1966 would be upset the next year by construction. An addition to the north side in 1888 added two rooms. High school continued in this building 38 years until a brick school was built in 1913 on the same block. The high school moving to a district of its own rented three classrooms. a laboratory and assembly C57 by 25 feetl room. The modern building had steam heat. modern plumbing and 40 watt tungsten electric lights. This building isgpresently the Joel Wood. The 1928 class was the lst to graduate from it. Only three dpercent of Palatine graduates attende these two schools. The sketch is the work of Dick Alcina, 1973. who is now a landscape architecture student at the University of Illinois.
