We W .- L ll- me cwwzf 6443010 DEPOT 16 74 P4Alf77fI1'E ILAXAIJAS With the Black Hawk war over, 8000 Indians gathered in Chicago to be dealt with by the Great White Father. After nine days of useless talks, the Potawatomis, Chippewas and Ottawas knew that they must leave the land between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi and go west. This was in 1833. In a year the Indians were gone, and settlers, chiefly English, came into the Palatine area. George Ela, the first, settled his family in Deer Grove in 1835. The Ezekiel Cadys, also from New York arrived in 1837. The first teacher in the area was Nancy Boynton of New Hampshire in 1838. The settlers found a country of unbroken prairie crossed by Indian trails. Prairie hen and quail were plentiful and so were deer and wolves. The settlers took to the groves that dotted the prairies. Eng1ishman's Grove, named for the nationality of its settlers, had the Wilsons, Swicks, Atkinsons, Bradwells and Kitsons. The Wilsons were Irish by way of Schenectady, and the Bradwells and Kitsons were from England. They came in the 1840s. Englishman's Grove is now Inverness. Vermont people in Plum Grove as early as 1837 came from Stock- bridge, and among them were the Slades, Porters, Putnams and the Durkees. Carsons came from Scotland The little communities in the groves grew. Then in 1850 when the state ordered the forming and naming of townships, the men met to choose a name. Suggested were Yankton, Deer Grove, Marion and Palatine. Harrison Koch, a Swiss from Palatine, New York suggested Palatine. It won over Deer Grove. When the railroad pinpointed a station stop in the middle of the township, the village came into being taking its name from the township. A proud name traveling long and far from the Roman hills had come to rest and grow. Another Gullett drawing: the depot sat between Plum Grove and Bothwell until its 1971 move. This brick Methodist church wasibuilt in 1895 replacing a wooden structure of 1857. The Rev. William H. Smith was pastor. It was refurbished and rededicated to community use this year. The W. G. Ost home served as village library from .lune 8. 1958 until November 1975.

Some others werejunior Kevin McKenna scoring the most in the MSL. Dawn Guthrie arranging carnations for distribution on Valentine's day. and choir's big moment June 1975 singing in Atlanta for Kiwanis International. Pictured are Frank McGee and Chris Burbidge standing on the bus on the way back to their dorms. But Mary Santy modeling the cap and gown chosen by the seniors was centennial. Mary. a member of choir and madrigals, was also in council. Both she and Jamie represented Palatine at the January rap session with the school board. Sneak gwtnctlk Plfiikf' For the centennial. this mural, one of three created by art students. was chiefly done by Pete Lowe and shows the wit of a cartoonist as well as the work of an artist. He placed four pieces in the Scholastic contest and one went national.
