76 XX l A land of marsh and Indians While the Palatines along the Mohawk were fighting for their lives 200 years ago, that area to be known as Palatine, Illinois lay virgin prairie and marsh land dotted sparsely with groves of elm, oak, plum and apple. It was home for the buffalo and white tailed deer, a stopover for waterfowl. It was home of the Potawatomi, last of the Indian tribes in the state of Illinois. Then 200 years later, Palatine High made obeisance to history. A Bennington flag flew daily in front of the school and on the football field for games. The Betsy musical set the tone in September even before David St. John, 1970, in revolutionary garb shot off his musket at the first home game. Williamsburg movies were showng two tours of Chicago architecture were made: and students became interested in the historical society. Orchesis had a Yankee Doodle number, and V-show was slightly irreverent with its bicentennial moments. Symphonic band touched the country's musical heritage in money raising concerts for its trip to Washington. DC for two Memorial day concerts. Home economics gave a fashion show, and a Cantata compiled by Mr. Trimborn was presented by band and choir May 26 and 27 in Cutting hall with Kenneth Ander- son, theater professor at the Fox Valley center of the Univer- sity of Wisconsin narrating.
