L. Hamlin (graduates of Palacios High School) and in commemoration of those who also ventured to meet the enemy in Vietnam ... the annual staff of 1972 proudly dedicates this edition of the Ebb Tide with hopes and dreams of world peace for all mankind. MICHAEL PIERCE Bless You! From ashes to dust so shall they depart 'Til we but behold remembrances of them in our hearts. Cold winds of tempered seas blow o'er their graves Whilst men we've not known die amply brave. With wings of birds sealed in their chests And hearts of glory with each small conquest They'll cast upon each other's shoulders Packs upon packs of those small deadly boulders; And for their fellow friends and foes Fight the enemy in their adult woes. But no! What friction this must be To live from loved ones across the sea contemplate right from wrong to this world you’ll never belong To turn to the sky with new opened eyes Because you've answered all your whys This is the fee you've earned Something valuable others shall never learn Yet, each day a flag is raised to the sky; The bodies of thousands will die Just as thousands will joyfully give birth To a new generation of men like these Who will have their chance to make pea Amongst a world of people with differe; And also many, many countless griefs 3 Personal self-control of one’s attitudes and sense of values is a measure of maturity. Self-discipline, the ability to assess one's own moods, and the sensible control of gratifying feelings are further evidences of proper mature development. People are not bom with these abilities. Their education, training, environment, and circum- stances are responsible for their developing and maturing. Parents, teachers, and the community all share in the responsibility for young people's learning to cope with their personal and social conflicts within society. I am personally very proud to have been a part of each student's maturity. I look TO THE CLASS OF 1972: Congratulations to each of you on your completion of the first step in life. The choice now is up to you as to what your next step will be. I believe that you will make the most of your decision and whatever step you decide on, remember the Palacios High School and as for me, I will always be behind you in each endeavor you might tty. Again, congratulations and may you always have the best in life. Sincerely, Dear Students: As students of Palacios Junior High School you should support your school by striving to do your best scholastically and by participating in all phases of the curricular program. In schools, as well as through life, you should assume responsibility, develop initiative, conduct yourself with dignity, and respect, and cooperate with others. I hope your school life will be filled with achievement and satisfaction. Please take full advantage of the opportunities offered by wholehearted participation in school. Changes are on the rampage not just in the area of school but throughout society. The measure of any item's worth is how well it meets the needs of the people it serves, and needs are changing every- day. Take a look around - at the clothes, the cars, the buildings, the roads. Some of what was traditional for many years has already been updated because of new interests that today's students have. I feel the yearbook should move along with this new era of young ideas. The yearbook staff cannot simply sit down, begin brainstorming, and incorporate into the yearbook a number of innovations just be- cause they are new and different. In order to be successful, a year- book must be accepted by the students. I have used new techniques and styles in the 1972 Ebbtide in hope to show the real PHS. Pictures must tell the story. We have tried to use pictures that tell more than the obvious. I have sought to show a deeper message through a casual mood - one that is filled with shouts of emotion, and to show action along with faces. More emphasis was given to the people in action than to the people in poses. Being Ebbtide editor has been an unforgettable and eventfui ex- perience. I hope all of you like the 1972 edition of Ebbtide. My special thanks go to Mrs. Keel for helping to meet those dead lines, to the staff members for their work, to the photographers for their time and effort, and to my assistant editor Fred Perkins for agree ing with me. They just play with more gusto and determination. They never give up! 91 Fall is a time for walking through crunchy leaves, getting a chance to wear that sweater you bought in the summer, and FOOTBALL! To some football is just a game, but at PHS it is a spirit that hovers over students from September through December. This spirit comes in many forms and fashions. To the band it may be marching in a straight line, to the cheerleaders it may be yelling until their voices are gone, to the fans it may be a good game whether the team wins or loses, but to the team it is a hard fight to please the crowd, coaches, and to satisfy the urge to win. Victory was sweet for the team as well as the supporting fans. We didn't always win, and when we lost the team accepted defeat with good sports- manship and a promise to try harder next week. 92 Coach Seale, H. Anderson, G. Kubecka, B. Farris, J. Heard, J.
