“
As the river goes from a small stream out to the ocean, we move from high school out into the world. Although one of many, each drop in the everchanging stream has its own particular path to travel, just as each of us will follow his individual road after graduation. Like the river, we hope to advance undaunted, conquering all obstacles along our chosen paths, until our ultimate goals are successfully reached. 1971 Ebb Tide, Dedicated To J. G. Smith Principals are a special breed They live by a well-known creed. Some are short, some are tall Smitty is short but he is not small. Principals have to rule their flock While students play at making mock.” Finding peace in our own time Does not seem to have a rhyme. Principals share our real concern: Growing up without the burn. Smitty's halls reflect our glee - After all these years, at last we're free! EDITOR'S NOTE ... The 1971 Ebb Tide Staff feels that a yearbook should not be a record of dates and places. It should tell a story, and create a mood. This story will change through the years just as the faces change for time does not stand still. Consequently, we feel that the manner in which the story is told must also change. Many hours and much hard work is spent learning new methods and techniques, and how to use them. The 1971 staff has done its best to present an accurate and interesting picture of life in the halls of PHS. To me democracy is primarily the conviction that there are extraordinary possibilities in ordinary people, and that if we throw wide the doors of opportunity so that all young people can bring out the best that is in them, we will get amazing results from unlikely sources. If you will just open your eyes and look you will find that democracy works as above stated. This is why, with all its discouraging blunders, we must ever- lastingly believe in democracy. it CHARLES GLYNDA KERMIT LEON EDWARD VAN MARGARITA WIGGS FARROW GIDEON BULLOCK SCHULZE KIRKPATRICK RAY Coach Coach Choir Agriculture Agriculture Band Biology VIVIAN WITTE Typing; Shorthand EARL ICENOGLE VOE; Pre Lab DOROTHY SMITH Home Economics JOHN ROTHER Bookkeeping; W. Karol Crowell, Lynn Mayfield, Diane Greenawalt, Lydia Maxwell, Carolyn Novak, Consepcion Castanon, Diane Rodriquez Teacher of the Year Dear Students: My associations with you thus far have been pleasant and rewarding, and I am most grateful for the privilege that has been mine serving as your math teacher. Let me urge you not to waste time but to use your time in preparing for your adult- hood, to perform your school work and other tasks to the best of your ability so that you can say, My community is a better place in which to live because I have lived here . It takes very little effort to live in a manner worthy of the life which God has so graciously given you. Your opportunity for preparation for higher learning Is now. What you do to- morrow, and all the other tomorrows, depend largely on how well you use today. Your teachers are ready and willing to help you. Use this opportunity to your best advantage. I would like to leave one of my favorite thoughts with you: To thine ownself be true And it must follow as die night the day Thou canst not be false to any man. Sincerely, Allie Mae Whitley Dear Students: Mental alertness demands study. Winsome personality thrives on service. Physical strength demands exercise. Our society always needs more strong, energetic, long range thinkers that have magnetic personalities and good moral character. If you will take advantage of our school subjects, organizations and extra-curricu- lar activities that are offered, you will be prepared to meet the needs of our society. It takes a lot of self-discipline for a person to reach his potential. What is needed is fewer words and more real work. A lot of determination is needed to overcome the obstacles and reach objectives. Get on the Varsity Team of life. Face your tasks with the desire that is needed. Don't listen to the person who constantly tries to poison your mind by whispering, I'm afraid you won't be able to make it. ” Many people are good starters but poor finishers. The streets of society are full of people who started out but fell by the wayside. 1 beg you to challenge yourself with high goals and discipline yourself with the necessary courage to reacn them. Please allow, me to help you any time that I can be of service. Sincerely yours. V. J.
