.01.«,  - - r - s EBBTIDE 1968 Palacios High School Palacios, Texas EDITOR: Yolanda Baldwin ASS'T. EDITOR: Phylis Tanner SPONSOR: Mrs. Mary Friery Prologue . . . Dynamic is the word for campus life: Today’s teenagers are caught up in a continuous whirl of achievements and activities ranging from the creative to the colorful. There are the everyday oc- currences—chatting with friends in the hall, fighting the lunchtime crowds, term themes and final exams. And there is the continual striving for achievement in lit- erary and artistic pursuits. But the core of a school is perhaps best capsuled in all the glamour, excitement and enthusiasm of a spirited crowd-streamers flying in the wind, cameras flashing, cheers, the Alma Mater. This is campus life, ’68.” Dedication The 1968 Ebbtide is dedicated to peace in Viet Nam, in the hope that in the years succeeding, an understanding among the peoples of their nation and all other nations may evolve, bringing about the unity of mankind. In this year of 1 968, it is particularly appropriate that the Ebbtide express ap- preciation to the American soldiers who are still fighting in Viet Nam. Many for- mer students of Palacios High School are serving their country in Viet Nam. They are our bulwark against aggres- sion, our hope of a free tomorrow. We feel the entire community of Pala- cios joins us in a salute to our soldiers who are making such a courageous and determined effort to gain the ultimate victory. SMITH To the Students of Palacios Senior High School: Congratulations to each of you for a wonderful year. As each school year goes fleeting by it seems to me that you, the student body, improves and I find it much more difficult to say adieu to the Seniors and welcome to the Sophomores. During this past and wonderful year, amid our trials and tribulations, each of us have found time to work, study, and play. My best wishes to all classes of 1967-1968 and may you be blessed with success in all your ventures. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL MR. VICTOR KAHLICH Dear Students: An uneducated person or society will find it more dif- ficult as time goes on to live in this country of vast knowledge. At no time in history has the need for classroom education and proper training of skills been greater. In order for you to reach your total education potentials, it is necessary for you to see the school classroom early in life as a privilege and opportunity extended to you through the foresight of your forefathers. Look at ed- ucation as a responsibility you have to yourself, your family, and your country. Students, your educational needs are too great to be taken lightly. It is my sin- cere hope that each of you will set high educational goals for yourselves and that I will play a part in helping you to reach your objectives. xJ$7 Ul L V. J. G. Smith. Mr. Loud- erback. Coach Shreve, Mr. J. G. Smith. As we, the Senior Class of 1968, leave Palacios High School, we take with us the many wonderful memories of our twelve ex- citing years in school. This past year we have shared many thrill- ing and happy moments together. Our senior parties; the Method- ist Kid Party, the Presbyterian Hobo Party, and the Catholic Ban- quet, are events all the Seniors enjoyed and will remember. They also will remember the three flat tires, the water pistol fights, and the water balloons that the senior boys gave the senior girls on the hayride. After much effort and hard work, the senior play, Blithe Spirit, added many more fond memories. The senior trip, when Palacios invaded Bandera, is an event especially remembered by each and every senior. The wild pea- cock hunts, getting caught at Ghost Town, the flag-raising cere- mony, the pool with the groovy juke box, and all the other exciting happenings will always be treasured by our class. Al- though it rained during the trip, it did not dampen the spirit of the Class of 1968. So now we have to leave Palacios High School. We thank our wonderful teachers, and especially the senior class sponsors, for their never-ending patience and kindness. We leave sadly, but with warm hope and courage for our future years. Be- ginning the Homecoming activities Thursday night, cheerleaders led the student body in cheers as flames leaped high from the huge bonfire constructed by the senior class and willing helpers from other classes. The band played with spirit and vigor despite the sweltering heat. Friday night, bright reds, blues, pinks, and beautiful girls graced the gridiron of Palacios High School. Sur- rounded by the band in the shape of a heart and the pep squad, the 1967 Homecoming Queen was crowned. The Queen was elected by popular vote of the student body. This year Miss Ber- tha Vargas was chosen to reign over the Homecoming festivity. After receiving a bouquet, she and her court returned to the side- lines to reign for the first half of the game. Roland Flores, Halfback - off. and def. D. Schroeder, C. Fitzmorris, D. Luna Football '67 As we look back and remember the year of 1967, we will not remember it for our great football victories. Although they won only one of the nine games played, the team showed great effort and perserverance. Despite its rec- ord, the student body is still proud of the team and showed it by the great spirit displayed at the games. Herminio Chop Rodriquez, T. off and def. Robert Lewis, QB. and Def. HB. Another year has passed in the life of Palacios High School and so ... another edition of the Ebbtide. Few know the actual work of publishing a book. It is not, as some would think, a number of pages bound in a cover. A real book is something more. It is made to harmonize in style, continuity, and design. All parts of the book are con- structed to complement each other. Consequently, this takes much planning and hard work on the part of the staff. Not only does the entire book have to be planned but also each page is individually designed to captivate the at- tention of the reader. This year the annual staff has doubled its efforts to publish a book that will be the pride of its owner and a com- pliment to our school. I would like to thank all the members of the staff who have made this possible. Now we pass the job on to the 1968-69 staff with the hope that they will be successful in their efforts to improve on what we have done. Yolanda Baldwin, Editor-In-Chief It” with 1967-1 Ebbtide w Staff In Memoriam to Adam Rivas and James Buzzard 'Adam Rivas passed away after an auto- mobile wreck on May 6, 1968. James died on April 2, 1968 in a motor scooter wreck. He was active as a mem- ber of the Palacios High School Band.
