People of these different occupations come and talk to the students about their particu- lar type of job, and this gives many students a better idea of what type of work they want to do. Many of the speakers are local towns- men; others come from different towns. Stu- dents from the 9th - 12th grades take part in Career Day. Vocational Office Education is preparation for lifetime careers in office occupations through a pro- gram of instruction to provide the initial skills lead- ing to employability and advancement in office car- eers. The training of future office workers in effi- cient skills will help them meet the needs of a chang- ing world of work. Vocational Office Education is an opportunity to put students' classroom instruction into operation, and the student is paid while learning. Also, the student earns two credits for classroom and supervised work experience. Students receive individual and group classroom instruction related to their occupa- tional training 55 minutes every school day and train on the job a minimum of 15 hours per school week. Statistics show more than 60 per cent of the boys start their careers in office work following high school graduation. This program is designed for students that plan to attend college as well as those who do not. Palacios High School has participated in the Vo- cational Office Education program this school year. Students have been employed at 14 work stations by the following businesses: 1. Blessing Dryer Warehouse, Inc. 2. Campbell-Huitt Insurance 3. County Commissioner, Precinct 3 4. GEORGE HOLST Principal. High School Principal, Jr. High School To the students of Palacios High School This year we all seem to be faced with indecision - world unrest, national problems, and the idea that whatever we do makes no difference. This makes all of us want to “Quit”. Over the door of the laboratory of a great automobile company is this sentence: “No one would ever cross the ocean if he could get off in the storm”. More often, I think the battle can be won by just sitting tight as expressed in this poem, author unknown. “When things go wrong, as they sometimes will; When the road you are trudging seems all uphill; When the funds are low and the debts are high; And you want to smile--but have to sigh; When care is pressing you down a bit; Rest if you must--but DON’T YOU QUIT!” Palacios High School Palacios, Texas Dear Students: Do you have a dream about the future? 1 have a dream which concerns every student who enters the halls of Palacios Junior High School. It is based upon the great American dream of equality and opportunity for everyone. In the dream all students are working to the capacity of their abilities, develop- ing their special skills, and practicing fundamental Americanism. The dream then moves to the students becoming adults in a world of opportunities for a good life, the good life including such things as good job opportunities, happy family life, and serving our nation as good citizens. Our senior year is especially filled with memories of such things as the senior play, The Wizard of Oz , and the parties given us by the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Catholic churches. The senior trip holds many memories, especially of the gorilla whose aim was per- fect, the peacock hunts, the donkey carts, the pool and slide, both flag-raising cere- monies, Sid's singing, and Lou's 'T hate girls badge. So we sadly leave Palacios High School, realizing that we are about to begin a new chapter in our lives. We will face the future with courage and determination. Going to parties, dances, football games, track meets, and basketball games have really made it a fun-filled year. The Juniors have studied hard and worked hard to give them one more year of knowledge. The Junior boys struggled through long hours of football and basketball practice followed by track season which climaxed the year. The girls have worked hard in basketball, volleyball, and track, trying to do their best all through the year. The Juniors have donated time to school organizations such as the band and pep squad. We were proud to have nine members in the National Honor Society. The Juniors worked hard to make the Junior-Senior Party a success. All the laughter, tears, anxiety, and happiness have made our Junior year really great. We are proud of both the happy and sad moments of the past year and hope the senior year will be the greatest of all. GLENDALE TEXACO Your Texaco Dealer MUTT, HOMER, BEN Debbie Schulte, Features Editor, assigns her assistant, Karen Kirkpatrick, to draw up a page to near the com- pletion of the annual. Mrs. Mary Friery, Sponsor Editor-in-Chief Dorothy Ham- lin and Assistant Editor Yolanda Baldwin relax with a sigh of relief as they mail the final copy of the 1967 Ebb Tide. AiuiuaA Ctof CoMfslks Longest Book The Ebb Tide staff would like to take this oppor- tunity toexpress our appreciation to the many people who have made this yearbook possible. This publi- cation would not have been possible if it were not for understanding teachers who were lenient and thoughtful enough to excuse students to work on the Ebb Tide when a deadline was near or pictures were to be taken. Business Managers Gwen Wallis, Susan Barnett, and Sandra Harrison draw up the ads which they have sold to finance the Ebb Tide. Without this ad staff the an- nual could not be printed. Assistant Senior Editor Helen Lawson helps Senior Editor Dianne Johs (left) pick the class editor packet from the file cabinet? Yes, we said SENIORS! Junior High Editors, Lynda Simons, Paulette Baldwin, and Craig Thompson were first to begin work this September. Dorothy Hamlin, Editor-in-Chief Athletic Editors Jeanne Koerber, Gary Hunter, and Mary Sanders. Real Sports! £v A A special thanks to Mrs. Friery, our advis- or, and to Mrs. Mae Paxton of Paxton’s Studios for her hard work in rushing pictures to meet our deadlines. Phyllis Tanner and assistant Bonnie Corporon examine examples for their Sophomore section. PHOTOGRAPHERS Danny Gibbs Tony Kana Activities Editors Sherry Gal- lien and Janice Vacek work closely together to complete their section. Sandra Linton and her assistant Alta Standley contribute a well arranged Junior Class section.
