THE 1966 EBB TIDE EDITOR: Margaret Herlin ASS'T EDITOR: Dorothy Hamlin SPONSOR: Mrs. Mary Friery Prologue . . . A school building is constructed of wood and cement, strong and permanent; but it is designed to accommodate an ever-changing flow of students. Year after year buses empty their loads each morning, and peo- ple stream in waves into the hallways and classrooms. To the rhythm of bells, tides of people wash in and out of the rooms and corridors and finally back to the buses, leaving the building empty. As each individual forms a part of this mass, so each personality contributes to the whole of Palacios High’s soul--that abstract thing we call school spirit. We salute every student and teacher that has added to this school spirit by giving that extra something to PHS during the school year, and we present some of them on these pages. Local citizens and students cooperate to have a Career Day. The Future Teachers give the faculty a tea. Members of the high school band form a stage band that performs ably at many school and com- munity functions. Talented students enliven school dances with their sing- ing. It is the men and women; boys and girls so poured in and out all day That give the building a soul of dreams and thoughts and memories. H Carl Sandburg Students participated in class demonstrations at the Open House. The cheerleaders work hard to give great pep A team listens closely to coach s instructions, rallies. 3 In Memoriam to Linda Dillard The 1966 Ebb-Tide is dedicated in memoriam to Linda Dillard, who was fatally injured in an automobile accident which oc- curred July 17, and died on July 20. Linda graduated from PHS in 1963 and completed two years of Wharton County Junior College and was plan- ning to attend Sam Houston State College, In high school she participated in -all activities. Her popularity is evi- denced by her being elected FFA Favorite her senior year. SENIORS PHS--You have given us determination- the determination to win You have given us inquisitiveness which leads to knowledge We have given you new ideas which come from knowledge You have given us leadership- - leadership which makes us responsible We have given you faithful service because we are responsible You have been with us in fear, struggle, and laughter which shows you care Now ... we, the Seniors, leave you ... PHS r 5 Seniors VS. Faculty Games Farmer John Dodson, Batman Shreve, Catty Card Beas- ley, Long John Wiggs; BOTTOM ROW; All-American Lowe, Old Lady Washington, Plain Jane Patrick, Round Man Robinson. These were the fierce opponents of the Senior boys in a wild basketball game that saw the Seniors fall to defeat. The women faculty members have a last minute strategy conference concerning their volleyball game with the Senior girls. It was to no avail; they lost. He says he won't play unless he can wear his batman suit. I've got it. No. I have. Hey. where's the ball? Did you see that? I made a basket! 6 VICE-PRESIDENT (PRES, of VICE) PRESIDENT Walter Bowers Senior Class 66 SECRETARY James Carl Dismukes Margaret Herlin WE, the Seniors '66, had a memorable and exciting year, starting with the first football game and ending with our honorabledischarge on May 31st. We have many happy memories of Senior activities-- the Senior parties, singing on the bus to Bandera, talking and listening to Sid and Lou at the Mayan Dude Ranch, and of course the all-night party. Among our sadder memories are leaving Bandera, and saying good-bye to our high school friends at graduation. We are proud of our class and its achievements and traditions—putting up a Palacios flag at Bandera, building pyramids in the swimming pool there, sending some of our members to the State Track Meet, and to Region UIL, and having dual valedictorians. We challenge future seniors to carry on our traditions and to be as great a class as the Seniors '66. SENIOR CLASS SPONSORS John Louderback Charles Shreves Dorothy Smith J. G. The girls began their athletic program in basketball, followed by volleyball, tennis, and track. The Junior Class was proud to have twelve of its members in the National Honor Society. They were also active in the band, pep squad, and other school organizations. The exciting climax of the year was the Junior-Senior Party, which kept all the class busy for awhile. Many of us did not leave the school build- ing when the 3:30 bell rang, but headed for a scheduled meeting. The organizations provided learning, light-hearted fun and relaxation for members. Any student interested in a club was free to join if he could meet requirements of the organization. The various clubs aimed for the future, opening the doors of new interest for many, and benefiting the school as a whole through their activities. We gained satisfaction in attending various club conventions, completingprojects, creating a work of art or earning applause on the stage in front of an audience during contest play. Sports has a broader aspect than merely winning games or cheering the team. It has a deeper and more significant importance to the spirit and life of a school. From athletics evolve qualities of sportsmanship, determina- tion, loyalty, and initiative that are building factors of strong character and sound conviction. Individuals with these qualities become stars, not only among their friends, but also in society. Included in the many branches of the ath- letic department are football, basketball, vol- leyball, track, and tennis. Palacios High is proud of its fine sports department, proud of its victories and proud of the star athletes it pro- duces. We especially remember how PHS students excelled in track this year--with Palacios win- ning the Region track meet, sending a record number of students to the state meet, and setting a new mile relay record at that meet. Remember how our faculty was always busy, but never too busy to help a student or to sponsor an activity? Remember how Mr. Linton’s math room always had students, even during his lunch period ... or how you could always find a senior in the English IV room making up a report or taking a test? Remember coming to school Monday mornings and seeing the teachers in a faculty meeting, and wondering what new thing they were plotting? The freshman, tall and casual, has long ago conquered Junior High and she is eagerly anticipating her High School years. The seventh grader, small and stiff, has just entered junior high and everything is new and exciting. The faculty is symbolized by Mr. Holst, the principal, as he sits at the public address system ready to give out the day’s announce- ments. The Stinging Hornet symbolizes all the activities of Junior High and that intangible thing called school spirit. This spirit was es- pecially evident during football season when the building echoed with their noisy and en- thusiastic pep rallies. 99 Freshmen Face: Mike Aguilar Patti Anderson Leon Anthis Ilia Raye Austin Vicki Baird Ronnie Bexlay Willard Boone Noah Broussard Gloria Brown Joe Buckley Mary Anna Buffaloe Forrest Chanik Felicidad Contreras Carolyn Corporon Carolyn Cotton Andy Cox James Davis Tony De Leon Richard Dobson Billy Dolezal Marcille Dollery Brenda Dove Eddie Dumas Freddie Eggemeyer Donna Eilbeck Carol Espinosa Connie Espinosa Diane Flores John Flores John Frankson New Subjects Charles Garcia Robert Garcia Ricky Garza Robert Gatica Eileen Gideon Lupe Gonzales Sherri Greenawalt Phyllis Griffin Stephen Hamlin Earlene Hardung Susan Harper Holly Harrison Herman Hartsfield Terry Harvey Shirley Hebert Sharon Highberg Dennis Hill .Mary Ann Holloway Billy Jackson Joe Jenkins Galen Johnson Betty Jones Robert Koch Derrill Kocurek Thomas Kocurek Betty Koening Sylvia Laslie Donnie Lenz Cecilia Loff Juanita Lucio 101 New Barriers Paul MaGouirk Phillip Manning Maty Martinez Larry Maulding Kent Mayfield Mark Mazack Sandy Moore Lucy Morales Steven Morrison Karen Neal Arthur Oliver Larry Pearce Stanley Perkins Dale Porter Sherry Rice Edwin Richey Bruce Remlinger Cecil Ringo Adam Rivas Josephine Rivera Linda Rocha Mary Rocha Rosita Rodriguez John Rowton Donnell Roy Hope Sanchez Mario Snanchez Robert Sanchez Charles Sanford Cynthia Seaman 102 New Ideals Emily Shake Charles Shelton Gene Solomon Phyllis Tanner Jimmy Thompson Pamela Vacek James Venglar Virgil Vernon Michael Viets Ruben Villarreal Ernest Volek Helen Wall Bennie Wallace Donnie Wallace Henry Washington Ronnie White Margie Wyatt Emily Gonzales 103 Eighth Amparo Alamia Kathy Arndt Linda Arnold Chris Auzston Paulette Baldwin Wilma Bass David Barnett Jennifer Beaty Wayne Bowers Buddy Brhlik Cynthia Burkett Diane Caravajal Ruben Caravajal Lupe Cano Hope Castanon Martha Chanik Donnie Collier Jesse Constancio Lupe Constancio Charles Corporon Herbert Davis Curtis Ellis Elaine Evans Brenda Farris Mary Flores Pilar Flores Jasper Garcia Jesse Garcia Mary Ann Garcia Tommy Garza Edward Gillett Rosemary Gonzales Ruben Gonzales Rita Hartzell Herschel Harvey John Henry Haynes Fletchie Heard Daniel Henera Judy Hildebrandt Claudia Hill Bettie Holloway Chipper Holt Eighth Carroll Huffman Yvonne Hunt Lawrence Hunter Mike Jenkins Kenneth Johnson Barbara Jones Karla Kilgore Emilie King Gary Kocurek Ronnie Kubecka Bobby Kunefke Vicki Kunefke Melvin Ladnier Carl Lawson Elvira Longoria Joseph Lothridge Consuelo Luna Elias Luna Jr. Vincent Maniscalco Johnny Martinez John McClary Kenneth Meyer Paulette Miller Dolores Morales Jo-Ann Morales Mary Morales Braxton Morton James Morton Alice Nordin Elvia Ottino Fabian Perez Mike Perez Mozetta Polk Bill Price Calvin Ragusin Angelo Ramirez Abigail Rangel Paul Remlinger Albert Rendon Dolores Rendon Harvey Ringo Jack Richard 105 Eighth Adam Rodriguez Frank Rodriguez Mami Rodriguez Mario Rodriguez Michael Rodriguez Ralph Rodriguez Jr. Wayne Roy Irma Rugerio Mary Alice Salinas Rita Segovia Cathy Sells Ysidro Servantes Lynda Simons Carol Ann Simpson Willie Simpson Carolyn Smith Larri Lin Smith Renee Smith Mary Solis Craig Thompson Paige Thompson Eli Tristan Ollie Vargas David Wallace Craig Wallis Ralph Webb Dennis Whitfield Karl Wickham Danny Wilderbrandt David Yaws 106 Seventh Lois Anderson Martha Aoughsten Charlotte Arrington Larry Baird Sharon Banner!
