Never again will we be able to participate in any of the enjoyable activities at the good high school where we have spent three short years. Sports night, western day, slave day, homecoming, the senior plays, the senior trip, sports, and all the banquets given us are things to be remembered. Throughout the year we seniors have spent quite some time and energy in the pro- cess of acquiring enough money for our senior trip to Bandera, where everyone had a marvelous time. As the seniors did last year, we also presented three one-act plays instead of one three-act play. In this group of plays there was a comedy, Three on a Bench , a se- rious play, The Revolt of Mother , and a serious comedy, Double Date . We wish to thank Miss Belle McGlothlin, Mr. Glen Weimer, Mrs. J.G. Smith, and Mr. V. J. Kahlick for helping to make them all successes. Well, our long twelve years of school are over and we face work or college, hoping that what we have been taught will aid us in whatever type of endeavor we next engage. She holds up the mirror of human nature for Betty and Harry, quarreling over a another girl Harry has chanced to admire. She sends them happily on their way and is herself exposed to a bit of romance. As the comedy of the group and as the last play, this one left everyone laughing. For years Father has promised Mother a new house and now he has built a barn on the very site. The fact that daughter Nanny will have to be married in the kitchen rouses Mother to action. She revolts and achieves a fine house. Of course, this isn't as easy as it sounds and this serious comedy holds quite a bit of action. JUNIORS CLASS COLORS: Blue, Gold The Junior class had three main social events during the year. They were the Christmas party, the class picnic, and the Junior-Senior party. The Christmas party was held in the junior high cafeteria. A skit to the well-known Christmas poem The Night Before Christmas was presented. Tracy Thompson made a darling Santa Claus. After refreshments were served and gifts exchanged, those who wanted to danced. We broke our tradition this year and had our picnic at the Gypsy Wagon on May 14. Everyone enjoyed swimming, eating, and a reckless game of drop-the-handkerchief. Everyone who went had a wonderful time. The Junior-Senior party was a lovely affair in the theme of a nightclub, complete with a doorman, waiters, a bartender, and cigarette girls . It was held at the pavilion on May 1, with music furnished by Tee Tieman and his orchestra. The Sapphire Room was beautifully decorated with silver palm leaves , blue lights, and white table- cloths on the tables. Favors for the evening were little champagne bottles filled with confetti. The program consisted of the reading of the Senior Will by Butch Bowers, and the Junior Prophecy by Roy Lee Hogg. Pugh Dismuskie, the great violini st, honored us by his presence. Refreshments of cake and punch were served. SOPHOMORES President Axel Haubold Vice-President Julian Jenkins CLASS COLORS: Pink, Green The Sophomore class of 1958-59 had three major activities throughout the year; they were: the Christmas party, Sophomore Sock Hop, and our class picnic. Our Christmas party was held in the high school bookkeeping room. We first had refreshments and then the exchanging of gifts. The Sophomore Class gave a sock hop at the East Side Elementary School with music provided by the High Fives . The gym was decorated with green and pink socks, balloons, and streamers hanging from the ceiling. The total amount collected from the dance that night was approximately forty-six dollars. The scene of the class picnic, towards the end of the school year, was Boling's Ranch. Everyone had fun swimming, playing baseball, and, of course, eating their lunches. April 28, Sports Night, started out with a bang when Butch Bowers, senior class president, crownedShirley Hogg, Freshmen candidate, as Sports Queen, and Barbara Ross, the Sophomore candidate, as Princess. The Sophomores won that night with a total of eighty-seven points. Throughout this year we have had a lot of fun, as we will, I hope, in the years to come. Miss Sharkette Becky Brandon, daughter of Mr . and Mrs . T.S. Brandon, was chosen by the Drill Team as the 1958-59 Miss Sharkette. Becky is sixteen years old, and has blue eyes and brown hair. She is five feet and two inches tall. The Sharkettes elected Becky as rep- resentative of their group because of her friendliness and cooperation. Becky is holding the trophy the Sharkettes won marching at the Rice Festival in Bay City last October. Mascot Shelia White, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney White, was chosen by the cheer- leaders for the Sharkettes' 1958-59 mascot. This five-year-old miss with blond hair and blue eyes worked as hard as any of the drill team or cheerleaders helping to inspire school spirit. She stole the show from the older girls at many football games with her flawless performance of all the yell routines . The whole school admired Shelia for her pep and energy during parades and pep rallies . In the words of the Cheerleaders, who worked most closely with her, Shelia was aperfect mascot! Julian Jenkins Harry Hulen Billy Douglas Aurora Gonzales Shirley Hogg Student Conduc. President V. President Secretary Librarian The High School Band, conducted by Charles Roberts, marched during half-time shows at all of the Shark football games. The band (in new uniforms) was led by our drum major, Cooky Maddox and four twirlers, Ann Cooper, Carole Raasch, M. Wilson, and George- anna Cartwright. The band attended the annual Rice Festival in Bay City on October 4th. The highlight of the year was the 7 mile parade at the Buccaneer Festival in Corpus Christi. Ann Cooper acted as drum major for this long parade. The year was climaxed with an awards party in the Junior High Gymnasium. The presentation of the John Phillip Sousa Award was made to Billy Douglas, a senior. We wish to thank everyone of you for your outstanding support of our band; we couldn't have done without you! ! Homecoming The 1958 Homecoming Queen, Senior Patricia Rogers, is escorted onto the field by Russell Law, a Senior, during the half-time of the Palacios-Needville game. They will walk to the throne between two rows of Sharkettes, kneeling to honor the Homecoming Royalty. Trainbearers are Karen Johnson, Kenny Ramsey, Renee Smith, and Chris Carr. Dennis Bowers is carrying the crown. Senior Class president Verner Bowers is crowning Queen Patricia while Sophomore Princess Judy Hunt and Junior Princess Georgene Stubblefield, with their escorts Jon Claybourn and Johnny Penland, look on. Carol Ann Partain, Homecoming Queen of '57, is waiting to present a dozen red carnations to the new Queen. The band stands behind the throne playing The Coronation March. Western Day These people are watching the 1959 Western Day events on March 20, which took place on the football field. Western Day was sponsored by the Seniors, who also served as guardians of the law. . - On the right Coach Newbill is timing the boys' hot coke drinking contest. Hensley won. Below left are the girl hot coke drinkers. Little Del- phina Perez won that. Look at Becky's frown as Peggy guzzles ! Below right are the con- testants for best dressed cowgirl. Florence Clardy, in her hoop skirt, won first Here we see the boys' fast drawing contest. Val Mac- Donald beat them all. Norris didn't win any prizes for the most unusual hat, but only because none were of- fered. The seniors took the Western Day trophy with 69 points. Sophomores were second, and Juniors last. More Western Day pictures on the next page---- Eating crackers is what's going on here, in the picture at the left and the one below right. Each contestant has to chew up 10 crackers and swallow them, then whistle. Harold Jenkins got through first for the boys and Thelma Kutach was the quickest girl. Kathryn Rodgers turned out to be the female Wyatt Earp of P.H.S. These, of course, are the girls' fast draw contest- ants . Slave Day Slave Day was February 10. These Seniors ( and a few who didn't make the picture) were auctioned off for a total of $195. Russell Law brought the highest price-$12. Was he worth it, Becky, Georgene and June? Notice Tommy's sign and Linda's makeup. Lacey's wearing his makeup, too. Queen Shirley and Princess Barbara admire their trophys. From their throne the girls watched the evening's games, most of which were won by the sophomores. The seniors were second, the juniors third, and the freshmen last.
