To us of P. H. S. it is a reality of today. To the grade schooler it is a vision of tomorrow. As the years pass it will become but our dream of yesterday. We, the staff of the 1957 Ebb-Tide, turn over to you, the reader, the fruits of our labor. Thumb through it with care; ob- serve it with diligence; cherish it with reverence; recall it with Best wishes always Tommy Brandon Editor-in-chief TOMMY BRANDON BOBBY GUTTENBERGER Editor-in-Chief Asst. Annual Staff The 1957 Annual Staff is to be com- mended. No longer was the job of gathering and assembling the annual left entirely up to the editor-in-chief, for each editor did their part. Special thanks go to Pat Christy, Dana Pore, and Billie Hayes for doing such a wonderful job selling ads. In deep appreciation for his kind understanding, his teaching ability, his willingness to serve, and his interest in his pupils, we the staff of the 1956-1957 Ebb-Tide dedicate this issue to one whose deep modesty should be a shining ex- ample to all of us, S. H. Clark, educator, scientist, friend. Modesty is to Merit as Shades to figures in a picture; giving it strength and beauty. -La Bruyere Left; Mr. Clark examines a Nutria brought in by one of the students. It will be put on display so that all of the science classes may examine it. Mr. Clark will also ex- plain in each class to those who are interested just what type of creature it is and also other interesting facts about it. This is one of the reasons Mr. Clark's classes usually are filled and have much enthusiasm in them. Dedication School Board LEFT TO RIGHT: Woodrow Wilson, George Stubblefield, Joe Ressler, Supt. TEXAS May 24, 1957 TO THE MEMBERS OF THE GRADUATING GLASS My Dear Friends The time has come for the closing of your high school career and the beginning of another phase of your life. As a parting message, I would like to remind you that the success or failure of your life does not depend on genius. Any young man or woman of ordinary intelligence, who is morally sound, honest in his dealing, and not afraid of work, can succeed in spite of obstacles and handicaps. If you have the right characteristics, your success or failure will not be measured by superior ability, but by the determination and effort you are willing to put into whatever you choose as your life's work. In bidding you good-bye, I want to assure you of my sincere appreciation of our association and thank you for the privilege that has been mine in serving as your school superintendent. I am most grateful for the many courtesies you have extended me, and will always count you among my friends. ABOVE: RALPH P. NEWSOM Superintendent of Schools Best regards, Ralph Newsom BELOW: J. G. Mr. Harbison has always left more than just whatwasin the text books for his students. Such things as honesty, forthrightness, patience and perserverance cannot be measured in terms of grades on a report card, but only in the affect on our future success. Note the double E and double P. At the RIGHT is a snap of the Sophomore Christmas party held, naturally, at Christmas and in the Junior High Cafeteria. Fast Count Powell kept records of the small number of fines that the court was forced to levy. Sheriff Henson directed the enforce- ment of the law. The Senior Class was able to realize a small profit on the day's activities. MA h H , J s Sports Night On Sports Night, following the after- noon's preliminary tug-o-war events (won by the senior boys and the sophomore girls) Miss Georgene Stubblefield, freshman re- presentative, was crowned queen with Mis8 Mary Ramsey, sophomore representative, asprincess. Miss Stubblefield was crown- ed by Irvin Henson, Sr. class president, and both were presented trophies by Bobby Guttenberger. Following the coronation the battle for the trophy started with the Freshmen taking a quick lead in the events. It looked for a while as if the practice at field day and the superior numbers of the freshman would pay off in victory, but they were gradually overtaken by the superior quality of the senior manpower (woman power too). The Seniors ended up with an overwhelming victory for the second consecutive year. Some of the events that were scheduled were the following: tug-o-war, centipede race, caterpillar race, skin-the snake race, dodge ball, horse rider, pony ex- press, kangaroo race, dizzy bat race, billy goat race, three legged race, sack race, and the three man race. iff Drill Team and Cheerleaders TOP ROW: Gwen Smith, Sue Ramsey, Mary Ramsey, Joyce Brune, Dorothy Roach, Mary Jean Roach, Sue Ruth, Rosie Janes, Betty Tanner, Betty Friery, Betty Anderson, Pamela Green.
