5 iSmitU School ‘principal To The Students of Palacios Senior High School: I have been trying all year to fill the position left vacant by your last year's principal, Mr. W. E. Sullivan. This has been a very difficult task, since the example set was very high. To do a job successfully, you must have the complete co-operation of all people concerned. I can truthfully say that I have had the best from you. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your fine co-operation all year. As you graduate and leave this high school, always carry with you this same spirit of co-operation with your fellow man and you will be a success. 9 J. C. Smith, Principal

Qaiplt CP Ylewdom Cil tScnCO l« To the Members of the Graduating Class: My Dear Friends: When the Roman Emperors sent out special proclamations, their emissaries 'rode forth equipped with sword and diploma.' the sword being carried as an emblem of power and the diploma as an emblem of authority. 1 hese diplomas written on prachment and bearing the seal of the government gave the bearer, as a representative of the Emperor, the right to free lodging, fresh horses, and the use of public servants. Hence, the diploma has come to signify a written document, conferring some power, privilege, authority or honor upon the person to whom it is con- ferred. The diploma which you received was given you as a mark of distinction. It confers upon you certain honors and privileges which the average citizen does not have. Those with whom you are associated and with whose life you come in contact have a right to expect more of you than they expect of the average. If you accept these honors and privileges without also accepting the responsibili- ties and obligations, you will have proven yourself unworthy of the diploma that has been conferred upon you. For that reason. I urge you to be ever mindful of your responsibility as a high school graduate and do your best to see that those who rejoice the most in your success will not be disappointed. With best wishes, Ralph Newsom Superintendent of Schools

eor fe junior School ‘‘Principal To the Senior Class of 1055: You have each spent the greater part of your life thus far in preparation for the future years. From your graduation forward your success will be de- termined by how well you have prepared for this future. Some of you will enter the business world: some will continue your preparation for the future by attending institutions of higher learning. Re- gardless of the road you take in the future your early preparation will always be the foundation on which you must rely for success. It is my hope that this all important period of preparation has prepared you well for the future. I know that all of your teachers, administrators, and parents have confidence your preparation period has been one of acquiring a great deal in academic skills, good habits, and proper attitudes. May these very important items bring you success in your future. I personally wish each of you a great deal of success, and sincerely hope you will let God be an important part of that success. 10
