Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1955 volume:

j’or word In a few years this, the 1955 Edd-Tide, will seem commonplace—if not old-fashioned. Right now. however, it means something special to all of us. We would like to put something special into it—something that says. This is our book: this is the story of our days in school—days that really mean something to each of us.” We would like to have pictures of all our activities—the football games, the basketball, volleyball, and tennis that we have watched with such avid en- thusiasm. the long band trips, the F.H.A. camps and F.F.A. exhibits, the pep squad's drill team in action, and thousands of things we feel we should never forget. There are specific pictures we would like to remember, too—the faces of the football boys after winning a game with an old rival, the band, marching briskly in Austin's 'Band Day” parade, the F.H.A. slumber party after a foot- ball game on a cold rainy night, the pride mirrored on the faces of the F.F.A. boys bringing their prizes home from the County fair, and the relief on the faces of the teachers on the last day of school. Since we could not get pictures of all our activities, we shall have to be content with the pictures of people who participated in them—here it is—the Ebb-Tide for 1955. CENTRAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Qaiplt CP Ylewdom Cil tScnCO l« To the Members of the Graduating Class: My Dear Friends: When the Roman Emperors sent out special proclamations, their emissaries 'rode forth equipped with sword and diploma.' the sword being carried as an emblem of power and the diploma as an emblem of authority. 1 hese diplomas written on prachment and bearing the seal of the government gave the bearer, as a representative of the Emperor, the right to free lodging, fresh horses, and the use of public servants. Hence, the diploma has come to signify a written document, conferring some power, privilege, authority or honor upon the person to whom it is con- ferred. The diploma which you received was given you as a mark of distinction. It confers upon you certain honors and privileges which the average citizen does not have. Those with whom you are associated and with whose life you come in contact have a right to expect more of you than they expect of the average. If you accept these honors and privileges without also accepting the responsibili- ties and obligations, you will have proven yourself unworthy of the diploma that has been conferred upon you. For that reason. I urge you to be ever mindful of your responsibility as a high school graduate and do your best to see that those who rejoice the most in your success will not be disappointed. With best wishes, Ralph Newsom Superintendent of Schools 5 iSmitU School ‘principal To The Students of Palacios Senior High School: I have been trying all year to fill the position left vacant by your last year's principal, Mr. W. E. Sullivan. This has been a very difficult task, since the example set was very high. To do a job successfully, you must have the complete co-operation of all people concerned. I can truthfully say that I have had the best from you. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your fine co-operation all year. As you graduate and leave this high school, always carry with you this same spirit of co-operation with your fellow man and you will be a success. 9 J. C. Smith, Principal eor fe junior School ‘‘Principal To the Senior Class of 1055: You have each spent the greater part of your life thus far in preparation for the future years. From your graduation forward your success will be de- termined by how well you have prepared for this future. Some of you will enter the business world: some will continue your preparation for the future by attending institutions of higher learning. Re- gardless of the road you take in the future your early preparation will always be the foundation on which you must rely for success. It is my hope that this all important period of preparation has prepared you well for the future. I know that all of your teachers, administrators, and parents have confidence your preparation period has been one of acquiring a great deal in academic skills, good habits, and proper attitudes. May these very important items bring you success in your future. I personally wish each of you a great deal of success, and sincerely hope you will let God be an important part of that success. 10 Myrle Burton Library I J. J. Harbison History — Math. It has sponsored several dances, the most important of which was the Homecoming dance. By sponsoring the coke machine and the Sports Queen race the Student Council has been able to purchase student awards and many useful things for the school. At Christmas the Council planned the program and bought apples for the students. Two of the most successful and enjoyable events sponsored by the Student Council were the Student-Faculty basketball game and Western Day On Western Day each student not wearing at least three items of western apparel was fined or put in jail (the south office). During the day the students and faculty participated in such activities as a tug of war over a mud pit. a spit- ting contest, and a greased pig contest. A semi-formal dance climaxed the day. 64 5 . 5”. c Bottom row: Left to right. (First row) : Harold Bowers. Joe Tanner. Keith Thompson. Rupert Hays. Eddie Peres. Jake Foltyn, Mr. V. J. Kahlich. But. alas, the million- aire aunt sends word that she will have to defer her visit for a few days. What is to be done? The dear young things would never visit the young men's rooms without a chaperone, but neither will the young men give up the opportunity of declaring their love. The problem is solved by forcing another Oxford undergraduate (Lord Fancourt Babberly) into a black satin skirt, a lace fichu, a pair of mitts, and old-fashioned cap and wig. As Charley's Aunt then, this old frump is introduced to the sweethearts, to Jack's father (who is advised to marry her for her millions), and to Stephen Spettigue. The sweethearts hug and kiss Charley's dear old aunt: the two men make love to her. Then the real aunt (Donna Lucia) turns up and assumes anothet name. In the confusion which follows. Lord Babberly gets Donna Lucia's permission to marry her niece (Miss Delahay), Donna Lucia falls in love with an old flame, Sir Francis Ches- ney, Jack and Kitty. Charles and Amy become engaged, Stephen Spettigue is foiled, and Bras- sett (the butler) is reduced almost to idiocy by the strange goings-on. 70 JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET AND PROM The Junior-Senior banquet and prom, held on May 14, was one of the highlights of the school year. The guests had a delicious meal of rose nectar (orange juice), moonlight and rose special (roast beef), little moons (English peas). crescent moon and stardust (rolls and butter). fleecy clouds (potatoes), rose petal salad, rose bud radishes, lovers' delight (strawberry short- cake). and rose water (iced tea). The Moonlight and Roses-' theme was carried out beauti- fully throughout the banquet. The prom, held afterwards in the gymnasium, was a huge success. 72 George Holst III Principal History Melba Sullivan Spanish History Mary Wagoner History Civics faculty Betty Rusk English Reading Spelling D.
