RALPH NEWSOM, SUPERINTENDENT To the Students of Palacios High School: It was the Roman Law in the days of Christ, that if a Roman Soldier in his travels met with a Jew, the Jew was required to carry the soldier’s pack one mile. It mattered not the direction in which the Jew traveled—upon request he must carry the pack one mile—no further. When Christ, Himself, heard of this and was asked for guidance, He spoke in His Infinite Wisdom, saying-“IF A MAN ASK YOU TO WALK A MILE-WALK TWO. As you leave school and enter upon the task of choosing your life’s work, remember that this great teaching is just as true today as it was when it was first spoken. To be able to go a little further—to WALK TWO—is the foundation upon which rests the success or failure of your life’s work. In a complex society, such as ours, it requires very little effort to live a life of comparative comfort; to be as good as the average holds no challenge to a high school student. But to be able to go a little further than is required, to rise a little above the average—to WALK TWO where the other fellow WALKS ONE—is a characteristic of tremendous bearing, and one that will pay high dividends. Regardless of what your life’s work may be. if you will make it a policy to WALK TWO where ONE would do, your life will be richer and your success assured. This book will serve to refresh your memories of Palacios High School on many occasions in the years to come. We hope that these memories will all be pleasant ones, and that there will be no regrets for things that might have been. Although you have felt that you have had many hardships in your high school days, you will realize that there were many happy occasions enjoyed by the entire student body. To those of you who are leaving Palacios High School at the end of this school year, I wish the greatest success and happiness inyour various walksof life. May your choice of a profession be made with wisdom and spiritual guidance.
