Senior High School Junior High School Elementary School FOREWORD This year the Annual Staff publishes the thirteenth edition of the Ebb-Tide. On the following pages we have attempted to picture your school life, activities, accomplishments and disappointments, friends and teachers. We hope that in the years to come this yearbook will be cherished as a book of memories of your days in Palacios High School. Editor DEDICATION We, the student body of Palacios High School, gratefully dedicate this publication of the Ebb-Tide to Mr. L. L. Stevenson, our former Vocational Agriculture teacher, who is serving his country in the Armed Forces. RALPH NEWSOM, SUPERINTENDENT To the Students of Palacios High School: It was the Roman Law in the days of Christ, that if a Roman Soldier in his travels met with a Jew, the Jew was required to carry the soldier’s pack one mile. It mattered not the direction in which the Jew traveled—upon request he must carry the pack one mile—no further. When Christ, Himself, heard of this and was asked for guidance, He spoke in His Infinite Wisdom, saying-“IF A MAN ASK YOU TO WALK A MILE-WALK TWO. As you leave school and enter upon the task of choosing your life’s work, remember that this great teaching is just as true today as it was when it was first spoken. To be able to go a little further—to WALK TWO—is the foundation upon which rests the success or failure of your life’s work. In a complex society, such as ours, it requires very little effort to live a life of comparative comfort; to be as good as the average holds no challenge to a high school student. But to be able to go a little further than is required, to rise a little above the average—to WALK TWO where the other fellow WALKS ONE—is a characteristic of tremendous bearing, and one that will pay high dividends. Regardless of what your life’s work may be. if you will make it a policy to WALK TWO where ONE would do, your life will be richer and your success assured. Best Wishes, Superintendent of Schools Palacios, Texas W. E. Sullivan, Principal TO THE STUDENTS OF PALACIOS HIGH SCHOOL Again we have reached the time when we turn to the publication of the Ebb-Tide. This book will serve to refresh your memories of Palacios High School on many occasions in the years to come. We hope that these memories will all be pleasant ones, and that there will be no regrets for things that might have been. Although you have felt that you have had many hardships in your high school days, you will realize that there were many happy occasions enjoyed by the entire student body. To those of you who are leaving Palacios High School at the end of this school year, I wish the greatest success and happiness inyour various walksof life. May your choice of a profession be made with wisdom and spiritual guidance. To you who will return at the beginning of a new school year may you ever strive to make our school even greater and a more inspiring place in which to live. May God bless you and keep you through the years of your life. W. E. Sullivan Principal of High School Palacios, Texas SYLVESTER CLARK Science I % W ARLIE CLARKSON Commercial J. J. Winnie Woof us, a wacky widow, and her friend Amelia Brown, a sen- sible widow, reside in Jane Malcolm's boarding house, just outside New York. During one of their trips to the city, Winnie leaves her red handbag in the ladies' room of a restaurant and by mistake picks up a similar bag left by Vera LaVere, the assistant to the great mind reader, Madame De- Faker. In the red bag owned by Miss LaVere is a code used by these Mental Marvels. Winnie thinks she has stumbled on an international code of a spy ring, so she consults the medium about it. Madame DeFaker is not only a fake as far as her seances are concerned, but she also deals in fake stocks and bonds, working this with a male assi stant. She di scovers that the wacky widow has forty thousand personal demonstration of her occult powers. She brings Vera along, who is entirely innocent of the Madame's sideline of fraudulent stocks and securities. To the boarding house comes a detective, Richards searching for a red bag containing fake stocks. Added to the red bag Winnie has, is an- other red baa bought by Egbert Smithers, as a present for Cissie, the maid, with whom he is deeply in love. Found with the bag on his person, he is accused of being the stocks and bonds thief. A rude constable, Jenkins Judkins, Is making lifemiser- able for Egbert. And the appearance of Winnie's bag, found by Mrs. Mont- gomery, a neighbor, doesn't simplify matters any. Learning that she is under suspicion, the Madame makes her escape in one of Richards' suits. She thinks that she has succeeded in selling $20,000 worth of fake stocks, but the tables are turned on the Madame. The identity of the three bags is established, and all persons accused are cleared. One of the persons involved is Bill Friday, an honest stocks and bonds salesman who is in love with Ruth Malcolm. An officer from the State Insane Asylum arrives and ties up the dangling ends by ex- posing Jenkins as an escaped lunatic. The Sharks scored on a 22-yard pass from Seale to Hamlin to keep a long winning streak alive, September 21—Palacios—6, Tidehaven—6. In one of the best games of the year, the Sharks spotted the Tigers a six-point lead in the first quarter when J, D, Tomasek scampered for 40 yards and a touchdown. Seale climaxed a drive that produced the tying tally in the third period, scoring on a three-yard plunge. September 28—Palacios—26, Crescent—6. Sam Seale’s passing and Pete Sardelich’s running proved too much for the Blue Jays, and the Sharks dominated them all the way. Seale tossed to Sardelich for 22 yards and the first score and to John Mercek for another. Sarde- lich broke loose and ran 38 yards for one touchdown and got the other on a three yard run. Seale and Sardelich each scored on an extra point, the first Palacios had scored in three games, October 5—Palacios—7, Kenedy—0. Billy Hamlin’s pass interception set up the winning touchdown in this one, Hubert Bowers going over for it from the four-yard line, Hamlin kicked the extra point, giving the Sharks their first District 27—A. victory. October 19—Palacios-2, Industrial-48. The District Champions showed no mercy in out-classing the Sharks in this debacle—perhaps the Cobras had too vivid a recollection of the frus- trating 20-20 tie of the previous season, Palacios scored two points in the final period. This game was the Sharks’ first loss in 19 games, October 26—Palacios—0, Goliad-14. Allen Jank’s two long fast runs upset the Sharks chances of winning this one. Except for those two touchdown plays, the Sharks played the Tigers a close game, November 2—Palacios-33, Yorktown-13. Sardelich had a good night for this Home- coming game on a cold, wind-swept gridiron. He scored four touchdowns as the Sharks blasted the Wildcats almost off the field, Ralph Clement made the other touchdown and Billy Hamlin kicked two points. It was the first time in years that Palacios had beat the Wildcats on the gridiron. November 9—Palacios—20, Karnes City—33, The runners-up in the district had no trouble winning this contest, for the Sharks were unable to tally until late in the game. Clements scored the first touchdown, Wratislaw, the second, and Hamlin the final. November 16—Palacios—7, Ganado-20, Palacios went into the lead in this game with a touchdown by Wratislaw and a point by Sarde- lich. But then the Indians came back in the third quarter to get into the lead. BASKETBALL The P.H.S. Basketball team had a very suc- cessful season. After losing our first two games, the Sharks won 14 in a row. We won the Blooming- ton Tournament, and placed Harvey and Sardelich on the All Tournament Team. We won second place in the Bay City Tournament, losing only to Bay City, and placed Harvey on the All Tournament Team. We won second in the Tidehaven Tourna- ment, losing to Needville, and placed Sardelich on the All Tournament Team, We tied for second in district with Industrial, We won 32 games in all and lost only 6.
