FOREWORD It has been the aim of the Ebb-Tide staff to create a yearbook of the activities and school life of 1950-51 which will be cherished by each student in school. This could not have been made possible with- out the cooperation of the faculty, student body, and members of the annual staff. The Editor DEDICATION In appreciation for the advancement of higher learning made possible by the scholarships given to the school, we wish to dedicate this issue of the Ebb-Tide to the Trull family. In your daily contact with your teachers and fellow students you have acquired much that will be your possession in life hereafter. It would be idle to hope that each of you has achieved his ambition for the year; however, it is hoped the year has not beeq a total loss. To you who are graduating, I offer my hearty congratulations. You have achieved much thus far in your educational career. I hope that your success may inspire you with confidence in your ability to achieve even more in the life that lies ahead. To you who are undergraduates, may I say that we have enjoyed working with you, and we are looking forward to seeing you again next year. We hope that your summer vacation will be both pleasant and profitable and that you will come back next fall with a renewed determination to make the most of your opportunities. Best regards, Ralph Newsom 4 W. E. Sullivan, High School Principal To The Senior High Students The Student Body of Palacios Senior High School of 1950-51 has been one of the most con- genial groups with whom I ever had the pleasure of working. You have accomplished things that seemed hopeless at the beginning of the year. Through your willingness to work and your ability to succeed you have scaled every obstacle put before you. These qualities, if came into your professional career, will pay hugh dividends in all walks of life. To the Seniors, who are leaving us with the close of this school year, I say. Keep your chin up, your shoulders back, and meet the world with the same assurance you have exhibited to the lower classmen of 1950-51.” Juniors, we shall expect great things of you as Seniors of 1951-52. The members of the class of '51 will be looking back to see how well you are filling their shoes and will be pulling for you and Palacios High School wherever they may be. To the Sophomores I say, We are proud to have such a lively group of individuals assem- bled with us this year. Your energy has been something at which to marvel. When you have moved on to become Seniors of 1952-53, that energy should be directed along lines that will make Palacios High School proud to point to great accomplishments by you. W. E. Miss Mary Lee Bell was elected Homecoming Queen by the student body with Misses Phyllis Holsworth and Barbara Gayle as attendants. Miss Dianne Stevenson and Master Freddy Markwardt were train-bearers. E. H. Falks presented the queen with roses and crowned her during the half of the Crescent football game. A Homecoming dance was held in the gym after the game. The Masquerade dance was held Halloween night in the Palacios High School Gym. All of the witches, goblins, and black cats were there. Can you .recognize any of them? Left to right: Roy Markwardt, M a r i 1 y n Johnson, Johnnie McDaniel, Sam Seale, Donny Kitchens, George McHaney. Seated: Buddy Crawford, President. The purpose of the Student Council is to provide activities and interests other than school work for the student body. The council this year has done its best to do this. Two of the main activities for the year were the Homecoming Festivities and the Sports Night. Also the council sponsored a Halloween Dance and a Christmas Party. An intramural program was undertaken with awards being given to the winners. This included tennis, horse shoes, washers, archery, shuffleboard, and ping-pong. This is the first year that this has been carried on in the school system. The Student Council also raises money to give awards for the basketball team, track teams, and the volleyball team. The girls had a surprisingly good basketball team this year. I say, surprisingly” good because it was the first year for most of the girls to play. There were just three teams entering for district competition. They were Van Vleck, Tidehaven, and Palacios. Tidehaven gave our girls good competition, but Palacios always came out on top. By each team winning one game and losing one game it put Palacios and Van Vleck into a tie for District Champion- ship. The determining game was played on a neutral court, and Palacios was defeated by a heartbreaking score of 16 - 19. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Vocational Agriculture was reinstated as a subject in Palacios High School in 1948. Mr. L. L. Stevenson has been the Agriculture teacher ever since that time. The Palacios F. F. A,. Chapter has made a good showing in the three years of its existence. It has sent judging teams to state contests twice and has a pick-up truck which was presented to the Chapter by Mr. Charles Luther. The F. F. A. boys have also done well in the Matagorda County Stock Show. The Chapter hopes it can make as much progress in the next three years as it has made in the past three. The Palacios High School band under the direction of Mr. O. A. McGuffee has accomplished very much during the 1950-1951 school term. The band started its activities of the year with the Roy Miller B vs. Palacios football game. They were present to boost their football team at all the games. Two concerts were given by the band during the year to raise money for new uniforms. The band competed in two interscholastic band meets; one invitational which was held at Victoria and the regional meet at Kingsville. At Kingsville the band participated in sight reading and concert playing. The band attended both the Bay City Rice Festival and the Houston Fat Stock Show. Barbara Gayle, Johnnie McDaniels, Mary Louise vVells, Maxine Wells, Opal Buffaloe Maxine Wells, head cheer leader, was an assistant cheer leader in Bay City. This was her first year in Palacios, and she did a wonderful job. Opal Lee Buffaloe is a senior this year, and she has been a cheer leader at Palacios High for the past two years. Opal has done a fine job, and we hate to lose such a good leader. Barbara Gayle, Johnnie McDaniels, and Mary Louise Wells were all sophomores, and this is their first year in high school. Barbara was a junior high cheer leader two years. Mary Louise and Johnnie were cheer leaders one year. They did an excellent job. All five girls showed wonderful school spirit, and did a wonderful job cheering our boys to victory. Roy Markwardt, Lou Cavallin, Jimmy Kitchens, Vadis Barrett, John Crawford and Charlotte Simons. The 1951 Sports Queen Race was sponsored by the Senior High Student Council. Two represen- tatives from each class were elected to run for a week. They were Opal Buffaloe and Lou Cavallin from the Senior class, Charlotte Simons and Charlotte Plaisted from the Junior class, and Barbara Gayle and Vadis Barrett from the Sophomore class. At the end of the week the money was turned in, and the three with less money were eliminated. The three remaining candidates ran another week. At the end of this time Vadis Barrett was named queen with Charlotte Simons and Lou Cavallin as her runners-up. The queen’s escort was Jimmy Kitchens. Charlotte Simons was escorted by Buddy Crawford and Lou Cavallin by Roy Markwardt. The two runners-up were given white carnation corsages. The queen was presented a lovely bouquet of red rose buds and a sterling silver bracelet. All these gifts were given by the student council. After the crowning of the queen, the royalties were entertained with a wedding of one of high school’s steadiest couples, Roy Wratislaw as the bride, wearing his mother’s lace curtains, and Maurilio Rodriquez as the groom, wearing a frock tail coat and tennis shoes. They finally got to the top where they belong, and where we hope they stay. The third time, or year, seemed to be Coach R. C. Shelton’s charm. •’Sharkey” and all the football boys will be remembered for many, many years for their championship year. Our boys practiced long and very hard at the beginning of the season. They had twenty six players who all took part in winning our games. Thirteen of these were seniors with nine being on the starting lineup. The “Sharks” started out by winning district championship. We won this game 40-6. For regional we went to Beeville to meet Dilly. After a hard fight, we won 6-0. To remember our 50-51 football season, we have three beautiful trophies in ole P. H. S. Also our boys have their jackets with “Regional Champs” on them. The co-captains at the end of the year were two seniors, Roy Wratislaw and Charles Bowers. BASKETBALL 1950 - 51 Even though the 1950-51 basketball season was held up by a long and victorious foot- ball season, we feel that they did very well for themselves. The Sharks won four and lost four games in district play. The Sharks also attended two tournaments, winning Consolation at the Industrial Tournament. The B’s” did very well for themselves, and we feel that they may do very well next year. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL The girls’ volleyball team, managed by Mr. W. E. Sullivan, had little time left after basketball season to practice much on volleyball. The team attended the Louise Tournament March 10, 1951, winning Consolation, and the District Tournament at Van Vleck, April 6, 1951. The captains for the team were Sue Cavallin and Joanna Hendricks.
