CLASS HISTORY CLASS OF 45 The story of th1s years Sentor Class beg ns way back V1 the dtm oast We were much the same group we are today when we entered lunror Hrgn School Way back rn 1939 A D So why shouldnt the saga of tfns carefree never to be forgotten group have tts begmmng back rn those ancrent trmes lm askrng you why shouldnt rt? You may say ttat no other class hrstory began wrth the seventh grade but the class of 45 has done so d many thvngs that were never done before that thrs lrttle ttem wrll be aurte l'IOfOt,lQt'1lY drsregarded by the crrtrcs of Parnted Post l-lrgh School Yes rt was wrth great Joy that we trudged up the tmrd fhght of starrs rn that ancrent but venerable rnstrtutron Parnted Post Grarrrnar School for the frrst trme tn our ltves durtng the fall of l939 lt was tust after the Thrrd Rerch had ruthlessly overrun Poland but our happy go lucky were aurte unaware of 1t all Lrttle drd we dream that the war wh n started on the frrst day of September l939 almost to the day comctdrng wrth our advent rnto brg trme educatlon would sttll be raglng on the day of our gradua tron and would affect drrectly or mdtrectly but always au te forcefully every srngle member of our class Rrnk Thomas was elected the frrst presrdent of the class of 45 when rn the seventh grade Phyl Lewrs Rrnks flame at the trme was chosen as vrce presrdent We were off' lrrn Wurth wolf extraordrnary of the class of 45 was handed the presrdents robes ln the erghth grade and Mary Lou Thompson was elected vtce presrdent Rrnk and Tl our two Iumor Hrgh School presrdents Jorned the Umtea States Navy together rn the summer of l944 although they were not able to graduate wrth the class both wrll long be remembered as probably the two most outstandrng members of our group Mrs Mae I-loelzer Mrs Mary Shoemaker Mrs Helen Whrtlock and Mr leo Harrrson were the patrent and long suffermg teachers who gurded our steps as we romped through lunror l-lrgh School Furthermore 1t 1S only had the good fortune to work under her on her long and hrghly regarded record as a member of the Iumor Htgh faculty Every member of the class of 45 a group whrch loved her one and all smcerely hopes that she w1ll meet wrth great success rn her future plans Were 1t posstble that the leavtng of the class of 45 was done wrth as much regret on the part of the PPI-lS faculty as IS the departure of Mrs l-loelzer the class of 45 would probably stay on a few more years We entered Hrgh School w1th that undemable rarrn to go and up an at em attttude St1ng1ng Mrss Eleanor Venus Hogue for the class advrsor shrp we elected under her capable drrectron the followrng Off1C9fS for the Freshman class of 1941 through 1942 Mr and Mrs Francrs Brown presrdent and vrce presrdent respectrvely tat the ttme they were Francrs Brown and Phyl Hedges but thmk nuthrn of rtl Don Rrnk Thomas secretary and 'Beverly Hostrander treasurer Ah yes we staged the tradrtronal gooa weather hrke wrth that ever present always mvrted Kenneth Clrcauennor provrdtng the ever present never rnvrted wtsecracks A skatmg party and shrndrg rn the weatherbeaten gymnasrum of PPHS also added to our fun whrle the laps were see-mg to rt that we would graduate wfule the Umted States was at war lt was rn December l94l at a ttm when we as com placent lrttle Freshmen were wandermg armlessly around the corrrdors of Parnted Post I-lrgh School that the laps attacked Pearl Harbor lt was durmg our Sophomore year that the class of 45 lost tts hrs' member to the armed forces Marv BeGell elected presrdent of the las for the Sophomore year left the old home town rn the sprrng for servtce wrth Uncle Sams Navy Marr has been mrssed greatly smce hrs deoartur from our ranks The other offrcers elected rn the fall of 42 were Altce Reea vrce oresrdent DeSales Apenowrch secretary and Lots Krng treasurer Mrs lean Damels gtrls gym rnstructor and at that trme Mrss Eldle was selected as class advtsor for thrs turbulent oerrod rn our hrstory I say turbulent because a most rnterestrng hay rrde C75 was emoyed by our class tn thrs perrod tAnd how whoopee woo woo sweet memorresl plus a slrgnt party rn the same dtlaprdated gym that put up wrth us as Freshmen Cf class i' 1' I - ' ' ' 1 . 1, ' ' A I A A A . 1 1 f . , W . . wr te up rn the Poster of 43 was nothmg less than a corny dralogue between some m1ce but the strange part about 1t IS that the m1ce have slnce deve oped rnto hrgh bred cats maybe the honorable professor Sanford can explam thrs phenomena And then now hold your breath folks came that year of all ye.trs the Iumor year' flt s about trmel We perched Lee Searfoss hrgh and dry rn the presrdents chaxr Bef Hostrander at hrs srde and kept Gerry Wrlcot and Mary Lou Seeley busrly takmg notes and addmg greenbacks as they rolled rnto our treasury Sure enough Gerry was our secretary Marr lor Seeley our treasurer and Bev our vrce presrdent for the lumor year Norm Phelps Parnted Posts ambassador of good wrll from Addrson and v1ce versa was grven the dubrous honor of advrsor to the class of 45 as 1t entered 1nto the brggest years of 1ts exrstence Mr Phelps really took rt as an honor to be advrsor to us hell1ons and through hrs untrrrng efforts we were able t make a success of the two brggest actrvrtres of any Iumor class the sa'e of Chrlstmas cards and the publ1cat1on of the yearbook No we drdnt equal the record sale of Chrrstrnas cards that the Semors at that trme boast a unmercrfully of but there rs only one reason for that Adolf l-lrtler Because of wartrme slrces rn the paper supply we were depr1ved of the brggest sale getter IH the whole Chnstmas Card racket wrapplng paper All told we d1d sell more of the cards themselves than the class that was so good at estabhshrng records As for the yearbook we completely outdtstanc ft the class of 44 rn that as well as all others before us at least we lrke to thmk so I suppose all of the classes are gutlty of th1s m1sdemeanor Al Parsons was the Ed1tor Blnk Thomas the Busmess Manager and Mr Phelps of course the boss Wrth Mr Phelps well balanced layout and some draw rngs by lack Lagerbom tossed ln for good luck the class of 45 put out yearbook revolutronary at least lf not what some people rmght thmk so around the Chrrstmas of our lun1or year and belreve 1t or not sponsored a dance' lt was some affarr and up to the trme of thts wrrtrng the clos st that our class has come to engagrng 1n th1s age old war banrshed actrvrty The year ended wrth the class well ahead rn fmances and marks and pre pared to ascend to the top of the mountain we were now Senrors ana from now on I arnt usm no more slang The electron for Semor Class offrcers resulted rn the selectron of Roger Alderman as presrdent Betsy Shumway as vrce presrdent and Alan Parsons as secretary treasurer Th1s gave our class a d1st1nct1on few can clarm nobody served two terms as presrdent and thrs goes to show what a great wealth of materral we had W1th Mr Phelps once agarn leadrng the way we entered our Senror year wrth the convlctron that we were gomg to succeed rn every way and when the frrst month s averages came out the astomshea faculty of PPHS saw a m1racle that seldom occurs We were strll on top scholastrcally as we had been for our other three years lt IS not very often that the Semor class boasts the hrghest average of the four We took the tradrtronal tnps to Womans Club and Rotary enroymg every one of them and at the same trme undertook the productror of a Senror play an undertakmg that was marked wrth the same earnestness that seems to be a part of our endeavor The Grrls Take Over was the trtle and 1t proved rn all ways a complete success Trcket sales tor thrs event swelled our treasury rmmensely Ten boys remamed rn the class of 45 when they became Sen ors as agarnst 35 grrls Thls was some reductron especrally rn the male ranks from the crowd that entered lunror l-hgh School Just one day after the world greatest conflrct had 1ts small but swrft begrnmng on the border of Poland The class of 45 numbered 73 when rt entered as Freshmen and has shrunk to rts present srze of 45 Say now rsnt that sumpln the Class of 45 has 45 members as rt graduates There are seven servrcemen that we lrke to mclude as a vrtal part of our class Thre of these have already been mentroned The other four although they mrght not have fmtshed hrgh school wrth us Chuck Klng Pete Smrth Chuck Carpenter and Henry Cramer were among our ranks as Freshmen ,Y QF X- .
