Dragon fans join the excitement at the Rotan send-off. egistration day was met with mixed feelings of excitement and an- ticipation for starting another school year, yet with some regret for the end of another summer. Registration was about the same with 131 total students enrolling. There were eight new students who registered for their first year at PHS. Freshman had to make a choice of which degree plan, regular or advanc- ed, they would be working for during their high school years. Seniors had their portraits made by Dick Reylea from Unique Reflec- tions in Lubbock. Registration went very smoothly because each class had their own designated time to register, and teachers helping them could concentrate on classes available to each separate grade. As freshmen, Lacy Fell, Rita Hemphill, and Ron Gilbert look over the requirements for a regular or advanced degree. Mr. Utley recruits sophomore boys for his agriculture classes. Alberto Gonzalez inquires about the home economics classes from Mrs. Tucker. bv- Robert Stotts, transfer student from Childress, checks local requirements for sophomore students. Most seniors had their portraits taken the day of registration. This is the third year Dick Fteylea has been senior photographer. Alberto Gonzalez, senior, was the very first student present to register. He gets plenty of help from Mrs. Trent, Mrs. Tucker, and Mr. Eakins. Mr. Staggs advises sophomore students on required math classes. Sabra Mayberry and Melissa Taylor compare their schedules with other classmates. The Dragons came away with a hard-fought 39-0 victory over the Memphis Cyclones on the night of Oct. 2. Spirits were high when fans and students left the stands to congratulate the players on the field. When the coaches shook hands after the game, as is customary, Memphis Coach Monzingo showed un- necessary resentment towards the Paducah win by punching Paducah Coach Tony Martinez in the face. Although Monzingo's unsportsmanlike attitude caused an uproar, good spirits prevail- ed as Paducah fans and players celebrated the Homecoming victory. But despite the many awards, honors, and achievements he has received in these sports as well as track, he has an unpretentious approach to his tremendous ability. He remains our Big Will, with a beautiful grin from ear to ear. He is a very valuable member of our high school and contributes pride, wit, and a convivial spirit to it. This past summer, a great achievement she made was getting chosen for the newly formed Sea-World Band. Carrie is as comfortable in the livestock arena as she is anywhere else. She has been active in FFA all through high school and has been its sweetheart for the last two years. Overall, Carrie is likable, capable, smart, and a fun-to-be-around person. Perhaps the marching band has made a one in the past, but it has been so long that no one can remember. However, many band members will long remember October 24, 1987. Some thought the excitment when the ratings were announced in Wichita Falls could not be topped. But then when the bus arrived home there was an out- pouring of community pride. Led into town by the Sheriffs car and the fire engine, there follow- ed a parade of cars and people waving banners and streamers. The last performance of the cir- cus was even delayed so people could welcome home a Class A - alft band. Lots of hard work, especially the last two weeks, led to the ex- cellent rating, accor- ding to new director David Eakins. r '- Sify ms, ff? People in Paducah have talked for thirty-three years about the super team of '54. Finally the long drought has ended, and now we can remember the team of '87. People often tell you that winning isn't everything, but it' sure as heck' beats the alternative. Besides, winning is fun. Every week you thought the excitement couldn't get any better, but it did. More decorations appeared, the band led impromptu rallies in the hall, orange flags were handed out at games to wave, and Orange Crush cans filled with rocks were given to fans to shake. Many memorable moments occurred during the season, recalled Coach Martinez. Little did the Dragons know that they were making history when they shut the Crosbyton Chiefs out in Crosbyton. This was a start of a long chain of shut-outs record- ed by the Dragon defense, a record that was not broken until the Dragons entered the Texas State Play-offs. The Dragons also defeated the Ouanah Indians for the first time in several years. To cap off a great season, the Dragons played in what was called one of the greatest 1A games in the state. Newspapers were calling it the OU-Texas football game of 1A football. The game featured the state's number one team, Munday, against the number two team in the state, the Paducah Dragons. The game was played in front of the largest crowd ever to enter Lion Stadium in Vernon, Texas. People ,got their money's worth as they watched one of the most exciting games ever played in the area. Even though Paducah lost, it will always be remembered as one of the greatest games ever played. With a Mogul hanging on to his foot, Shedrick Davis tries to break loose for a few extra yards. Chris Hurd attempts to dive over the stingy Munday defense. Dragons celebrate after a long awaited District Championship. 109 Victory Brings Regional Championship Things weren't looking too good for Chris Hurd as he was sandwiched between two Throckmorton Greyhounds. Allen Hurd lunges for extra yardage in the 24-0 victory over Throckmorton for the Regional Championship. 110 ,NJ V Season Successful 1. J,V. gears up their defense to face the Childress Bobcats, 2.
