E ' ARROWHEAD '68 Volume 36 Gae Irby, Editor t' , M Our World of Paducah Junior College has been composed of smaller worlds, which represent dif- ferent phases of our college life- WHERE WE WORKED, AND PLAYED, MADE FRIENDS, AND HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES. There are many mem- ories of the world in which we have been apart. Through WORKING, we have developed an understanding of self-discipline, and learned to live in an adult world. We have established an appre- ciation of college customs and traditions. Through PLAYING, we have had fun while growing inschool spirit and taking pride in being a part of PIC. Through MAKING FRIENDS, we have learned to respect opinions of other people. But most of all, it was here, in our world of PIC that we have come to realize that we belongg and it was here that we HAVE HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES. Gae Irby A Time To PADUCAH JUNIOR EQ- L. A DEDICATION IN TRIBUTE TO OUR RETIRING PR.ESIDENT, DR. R. G. MATHESON As this is the last annual to be published while Paducah Junior College is an independent community college, we wish to pay tribute to the man who has furnished the leadership and stimulus for the college's growth from one building with 26 students in 1936 to a multi-building complex with 1347 students in 1967. Dean, as he is affectionately known to thousands of former P. I. C, students, served as administrative head and academic dean of P.J.C, from 1936 until 1946. From 1946 until the present time he has served as president of the college. His dedication, his knowledge, his common sense, his humor, and his com- passion have aided Paducah Junior Co1lege's development into the kind of insti- tution that recognizes an education, not as the accumulation of memorized facts and rules, soon forgotten, but astheformation of a habit of mind, lasting a lifetime, which enables the individual to make discriminating choices and to arrive at wise decisions. Dean has given us the foundation for greatness. It will be the challenge of future leaders to build upon it. WE SALUTE YOU DEAN MATHESON . . . WHERE WE WORKED .-7' T S+ Most of the students of Paducah Junior College commute daily from throughout Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois. To each, PIC is something different. Yet, all are bound in the pursuit of one common goal - attainment of an education. This is the force which directs our lives. We work hard - in conferences with instructors, in classes, in in- dividual study, and in research projects. Before we can realize, another year has slipped away - another year in preparation for a lifetime of work. 1 f Q- 1 M, n , . , y--- vt 4, . ,M ff Q' I 1 1, ,' '-'. . This marks the thirty-fifth year of oper- ation for the college and makes it historically the first community college in Kentucky. Many changes will take place as a result of this reorganization. However, the basic philos- ophy of the institution which is to offer, under the most favorable conditions possible, an op- portunity for all students in this community to avail themselvestof quality education, will re- mainuthe same. The admissions policy will remain the same .for all Kentucky first time college freshmen and our extensive and interested counseling will be available for service to them. The student or- ganizations will be the same and all performing groups, including basketball teams, and all mus ic ensembles will continue to represent the school. The curriculum will be the same for some time and students planning to go to colleges and universities other than the University of Kentuck will have the same wide choice of required and elective subjects and counseling staff and all teachers will be as interested in the transfer of a student to any college as to those planning a University of Kentucky program. The King is dead Long live the King. A fine, proud era as an independent community college ends. A new era that can make a fine, proud tradition in the family of the Kentucky Community Colleges lies ahead. Y The Dean writing his farewell message ACADE IC DEAN DR. These courses form the major part of the Engineering program at PIC. Mathematics, the Queen of the Sciences' as well as the 'Language of the Universe', is fundamental to today's complex, technological society. Chemistry is a constantly changing science. It is important because of the principles of reasoning it teaches. Physics, one of the greatest of in- tellectual disciplines, must be regarded as one of the chief cornerstones of a gen- eral education. Geology and its associated sciences have continued to move forward to serve the progress of man in all fields. MR LEWIS BARBRE MR. WILLIAM BEASLEY MRS.
