fluid .Had tory As a group of small boys and glrls, we entered school twelve years ago under the leadersh1p of Mrs Brown and M155 Windly Travellng onward througk elementary school, we were rewarded w1th many more good teachers N158 Dlxon, M1ss Thlgpen, Mrs Gr1mes, M1ss Spain, M1ss Ward, and Mrs L1tt1e F 1 n a l l y we reached that dreamed of day Hlgh School Not only d1d Pactolus have seventeen new hlgh school students, they also had a new prlncipal, Mr Forrest, and two new h1gh school teachers, Mrs Heath and Mrs Forrest Under the superv1s1on of Mrs Heath, we, a group of green freshman, elected our class Off1C13lS Peggy Bowers was selected Pres and to asslst her were Jean Johnston, V Pres , Betty Lou Tyndall, Sec k Treas and Melba heeks, reporter The tallsman Rose was chosen for our class flower, red and gold our class colors, and 'Stepp1ng Stones to Suc cessn our class motto After the flrst month, we suffered the loss of our school, which mo tlvated us to trav l to the N Y A Center 1n Greenvllle As our fresh man year was endlng, many of our students were d1S3ppe3F1Hg Among these were Claude Harrls, Lucy Buck, J J Spelght, Ruth Powell, and Mar3or1e Buck who chose to dlscontlnue the1r education MOV1ng to other schools were Hazel Nebb, Wllllam Brlley, Marletta Wllllams, and Penny Johnston Peggy Bowers, left us temporlarly to attend Gr1mesland school and LOu1Se Langley went to New Jersey to l1ve w1th her slster As the end of school rolled around, slx of us freshman were promoted to the tenth grade HdV1Hg galned R B Bowers, Cary Trlpp, Kenneth Toler John Langley, Faye Crlsp, nary Frances Dav1s, M1nn1e Oakly from the preflous vear's tenth grade and Peggy Bowers back from Gr1mesland, we began our second year of hlgh school w1th a total of fourteen memb rs Before the end of the year three of our students, Cec1l Corbett, Mary Frances Dav1s, and Mlmmie Oakly wlthdrew from school the latter preferrlng marrled l1fe to school On hay 7 l9u9, Jean Johnston, Nelba Meeks, Faye Cr1sp, Jean Lee Betty Lou Tyndall had the honor of servlng at the Jun1or senlor Banquet Although lt was a lot of work we engoyed lt very much Mrs Heath would agaln be our upervlsor Peggy Bowers was elected class Pres1dent, Betty Lou Tyndall v1ce presldent, Dorls Gray, Secretary R Treas urer, Jean Johnston, class reporter leven students comprlsed our Junlor class Tho we had one student more than the prevlous year, J1mm1e Jones, the add1t1onal member, d1SCOHU1HuBd school ln favor of a vocatlon Ie sold tobacco and ChF1Stm8S Cards to meet class expendltures Two of our boys R B Bowers and Kenneth Toler departed on November 28, l9u9 to serve w1th Uncle Sams Armed Forces After the Chr1 t mas hol1days we were rewarded wlth another member, Joyce Tr1pp from Ports mouth, V1rg1n1a Beglnnlng of the new calender year brought glad tidlngs with the arrlval of our class rlngs One of the most outstandlng act1v1t1es of our hlgh school career was the tradltlonal Junlor Senlor Banquet, wh1ch we gave on March 29, 1950 Our the me was WAlohaW 1n whlch we used Hawa11a1n decoratlons and our waltresses wore costum s of the natlve lsland g1P1S As our Junlor year was completed, we were ushered up to the twelfth grade When our Senlor year opened, we were faced wlth a new pr1nc1pal, Mr R D Plckelslmer, a new Fngllsh teacher, Mr Morr1s, and a new supervlsor, Mrs Forrest Retha Smlth, ha1l1ng from Stella, N C , golned our class to mak us a total of ten senlors Our S8HlOT class, w1th the help of a f w JUHIOFS, nlan ned to publlsh the Hlgh School Annual, TORCH Buch hard work was used in put ting th1s progect forth, but we produced a book of memor1es of which we can be proud Then caps and gowns and 1nv1tat1ons were ordered, followed by the in v1tat1on to be guests at the Junlor Senlor Banquet of 1951 and our tr1p to Wash1ngton, D C Flnally, the last step has been reached We out forward our best and last step to recelve that preclous plece of paper Our D1ploma To the faculty and adm1n1strat1on of Pactolus H1gh School, we extend our deepest and most heart felt gratltude for all the1r efforts ln helolng us to reallze our goal H1stor1an Betty Lou Tyndall P55 o .
