This year, in accordance wilh nafional evenls, our yearbook has conquered our space problem which arose from our expanding Packer family and i'rs increasing inferesfs in bolh academic and recreafional areas. We resolved +o expand +he Pelican from cover +o cover. We began by adding a color piclure of sfudenls dancing in fhe garden on May Day, and we did no+ sfop un'lil we had included 'lwo newly 'Formed clubs and increased +he amounl' of space given over +o afhlelic recrealion. Our hope is +ha+ you will find pleasure in 'lhis boolc, which holds belween ils pages memorable evenis +ha+ in fhe fufure will be our bridge +o fhe past The Assislanf Edilors, Nancy Hirsch, +he heads of s+aFF, Michele Chisena and Joan Bendilcsen, and lheir commi++ees have all worked +oge+her diligen+ly fo make fhis book a success and are +herefore +o be commended. DR. SHAFER'S MESSAGE My message is an appreciafion and a wish. Firsf of all, speaking for all Paclcerifes, l fhank fhis year's Pelican sfaff for fhe i962 year bool: ifself, for fhe fhoughf and imaginafion and hard worlc fhaf made if possible. This Pelican fakes fhe friends and fhe acfivifies of fhis year, sfops acfion and fime, and makes if possible for all of us in lafer years fo see ourselves and our friends in I96I-I962. The sigh+ will be infer- esfing. We'll profesf againsf change in ourselves, we'll have forgoHen some of our friends. Buf we'll give in: fhe Pelican will be fhe record, and if will sfand! My wish is fwo-fold. The firsf is simply fhaf fhose leaving Packer 'rhis year find fhe safisfacfion fhaf comes from growfh in whafever fhey do in i962-I963.
