I AM THE NARRATOR FOR THE SPARTAN ’62 . . . THIS IS THE STORY of three dozen interest- ing weeks — the nine months from Sixty-One's Indian Summer to the end of Spring in 1962. It has been a busy time, not only for the record- ing staff of this pictorial record, but busy espe- cially for those of you students who, trying to complete the essential final units for graduation, found yourselves also faced with a flood of un- expected demands — assemblies, programs, senior pictures, breakfasts, the graduation re- hearsals, cap and gown measurements, the last ■'stolen playday, the increasing meetings on this and that, and — of course — the increasing demand for MONEY. There will be much you will have to just “re- member, for no book of 104 pages could re- count it all. But herein we have tried to record the more brilliant highlights, and those faces whose memory we would not wish to lose. I ' ■ ■ THE {HEME, the staff this year felt, should be not in the usual manner designed. And so, after dozens of sheets of valuable paper were scribbled and thrown aside, it suddenly dawned upon us that was that for which we and our forefathers had always struggled — the promise of Tomorrow built upon the knowledge of The Past. And so, you will remember that the Students of Pa- cifica were called upon to offer those re- cordings of our HERITAGE which had brought to them the most encouragement. You will find them scattered throughout these pages . . . excerpts of lasting value from the best minds of the ages. “Contemporary American Literature is a living record of an age that challenges our skill, our strength, our life.” from: ADVENTURES IN AMERICAN LITERATURE DEDICATION . . . In Education, it is never a problem to find dedicated people to whom a Yearbook should be dedicated; the prob- lem is to find THE ONE. You will never forget “Larry Muekey, Vice-Principal and Dean of Boys, who dispensed effective discipline so gently that over the sting was always the balm of confidence that he really cared . . . that he really had faith we could pull through. Perhaps no one will ever know how many Pacifica boys have been inspired by him to stand straighter, to walk with pride. But someday the Boys will know, and so, this year, the SPARTAN ’62 is dedicated to . . . MR. JUDICIAL (STUDENT COURT) . . . the Student Court was not al- ways a popular spot, but it was an effective one, and the penalties it levied against student culprits were a sufficiently strong deterrent to al- most run the court out of business before the year was out . . . The hopeless years have vanished. The weary nights have fled. The sullen days are banished. And Yesterday is Dead. —Alva Romanes, in The Golden Years John Moiso Elementary Education Jos. C. Heading Pacifica's administration is Dr. Wayne Henderson, without whose guidance and supervision the school would not have achieved its status today. With Pacifica since its beginning, he has built a remarkable record with both faculty and students. . . . Associated with him, and pictured on this page, are his staff members, the administrative deans, the curriculum co- ordinator, and the head counselor. Under the latter's direction is carried on, by trained men and women, the work of five counseling offices, each meeting the needs of some 150 of Pacifica's students. Pacifica's faculty has an amazing wealth of back- ground training, in both general and specialized fields. Many are widely traveled, and many have practical experience to augment and enhance the value of their work. These teachers work in the conventional fields of Readin', Ritin', and Rith- metic , and expand also into those specialized areas that add interest to a curriculum for the student: Sports, Homemaking, Drama, Publishing, Photogra- phy, Music, Art, Business, and Foreign Languages. ‘‘A sense of duty pursues us ever . . . in darkness and light our obligations are yet with us. —Daniel Webster WITHOUT THE SECRETARIES PACIFICA COULD NEVER BE THE SAME Bonnie Wolcott Asst, librarian Rose Marie Mouzakis Head Secretary Helen Costa Finance Shirley Hernandez Attendance ’ Jim Morris Vice-President Marguerite Haro Sec.-Treas.
