K DEDICATION For the past four years Coach Frank LaSan has endeavored to create a cham- pionship football team. He has devel- oped in our boys a fighting spirit and courage that is known throughout the league . . . Coach LaSan's reputation has extended much farther than is usual for a High School coach. In I960 he was chosen as defense coach for the East-West game, as well as coach of the year by the Diablo Athletic League . . . We are honored to have such an outstanding coach at Pacifica ... To you Frank LaSan we dedicate the Spartan '61. PRINCIPAL Dr. Wayne L. Henderson is unusual, unlike— we understand—the usual principal. He is a builder. He chose Pacifica seven years ago when it was but a dusty dream in someone's eye, because he had faith that here where no school existed, a School could be built. And he has been building ever since, getting the money and materials by drive and unlimited confidence that he could get them . . . Classrooms, a library, science equipment, books, an administration building, a cafeteria, gym fields, landscaping — and now more classrooms and a multi-use building . . . Students, too, he has built, welding them into a Student Body of which we are proud, and linking this and the school into a larger unit in which the Parents now can take pride. For Pacifica is their school, where sons and daughters achieve honors as well as education, and graduate to go on into a future broadened because of a principal's dream, seven years ago, that has never died. All the usual Big Time games—football, soccer, wrestling, weight lifting, track, and general athletics—had their place just for the fun of it in PE. And the competition was just as keen as on the Big Fields. In PE we gained the objective of building Pacifica bodies through both the work of calisthenics and rigorous train- ing, and through the games that were played in between times on more or less regular schedules. y I V Girls’ Physical Education Cross Country Orne Anderson, Bob Sittlcr, Ed Hasbrook. Due to his leadership and great courage shown on the football field, the Spartan Football team went on to many victories. Steve Graves was voted MojI Improved by his teammates. Steve Qnave YYloit SJmfinoved 59 PACIFICA The '60 Football season in our estimation was a highly successful season. This line had the potential of being the best line in Pacifica's history. Injuries, however, hurt us throughout the year and changed the roster from week to week because of this. Coach Frank LaSan c H E S Pacifica also had an outstanding back field lead by Kenny Lopez, a quarterback. The players had spirit and courage as did the line. These men never gave up, or quit. In our opinion Livermore and Pittsburg were the season's two outstanding games. We beat Livermore, which broke their three-year winning streak and Pittsburg for the school's first football victory over that school, the Pirates. At the season's end we placed two line men and one back on All-League teams. We hope this type of school and team spirit remains at Pacifica for many years to come. The staff, composed of stu- dents from all classes, guided by the expert advice of Mr. Woods Peters has developed a paper far superior to those published at the beginning of the year. The paper has sucessfully given to the student body the campus activities through editorials, col- umns, and general student news. Jim Ostlund Columnist Jim Cosentine Columnist Pacifica's Drill Team, after working all summer on new steps and routines, appeared in September in new uniforms and new steps that gained Spartan acclaim ,and made us very proud of them. The Drill Team performed at all football games and some assemblies, under the leadership of Kathy Bruno, Anna Graham, and Linda Pinion. Membership in the P.H.S. Band gives stu- dents the opportunity of enjoying the fine art of Music. By working together the members learned the importance of diligent practice and developed a spirit of good sportsmanship. This year the band, under the direction of Mr. Jack Carstensen, has worked to en- rich our school and community life through Music. Marching Band Band Officers DANCE BAND ! The boys in the Dance Band this year, under the di- rection of Mr. Jack Carstensen, have done a great job of representing our school. This year they have performed for many activities both in and out of school. The Girls Quintette is a group of very talented girls with fine voices, they are. left to right: Sandra Mayne, Carma Christiansen, Pat Butterfield, Cherlyn Neely, and Sherry Street. Pictured above are: Bartee, Bulick, Chism, Conkel, Costa, Dantes, Hill, Lawson, Lief, Maxwell, Meeks, Murphy, Roberts, Savage, Snyder, Sorrick, and Speare. oir A special group chosen from the choir sang at special programs like, Christmas Programs, Spring Concerts, Music Festivals, Bacaloria, and Community Organizations. The Modern Dance Club is composed of lovely girls of Pacifica High. They are selected for their gracefulness and skill in movement. They are not really a group, but in an individual moving rhythmi- cally to the music in their elegant poses. These girls have worked hard to bring you their delightful numbers on many occasions. Miss Eunice Eilau is head of the Modern Dance Club.
