The 1982 Pacifica diamondmen faced many tough challenges during the sprin season. Re-aligned into what oth- er coaches described as the best base- ball league in the county, no question it was evident that the Mariners would be tested this season. But, because of the masterful coaching of Myron Pines and the fact that the Mariners have nine players with previous varsity ex- perience, they were counted on as sure contenders, while some coaches called them the team to beat. The team didn ' t apparently possess any evident strengths or weaknesses, yet its depth and balance provided for an overall sound ballclub. If there was a strength though, it would have to be pitching. Rob Glisson and Jeff Oster- ode, both starters for the 1981 squad, returned to form a strong starting nu- cleus. The infield was manned by re- turners Pat Ogle at third, Mike Ferrin at short, Don Whitsel at second, while Glenn Mayer and John Kopaczewski split time at first base. Junior Brad Schneider also saw time at second base to accomodate Whitsel ' s wish to play the outfield. The outfield was patrolled by newcomers Walt Foley, Mark Brad- ley, Scott Marskell, and Walt Blakely, while Brian Flatten did the catching with Scott Von Eps backing him up. As of this writing the club had compiled a 5-2 record, which included wins over Servite, Los Al, and previously unbeat- en county power Edison.
