Coach Malmquist discusses strategy The Pacifica basketball program took a turn for the belter in the 1981-82 season. All four teams have compiled winning records, including the varsity, who were victorious in eight of their first twelve contests. The varsity squad ' s lone weakness was height, as their tallest starter barely stood 6 2 tall. But they made up for it in team quickness and unity. The Mariners would employ a tenacious press to force opponent ' s turnovers, then use a lightning-quick fast break to capitalize on their speed advantage. The Mariner fast break was led by point guard Mike Fcrrin, while Jon Nagcl and Ed Brummett provided the outside shooting. Wait Blakely and Todd Henson added the muscle on the boards, while Tom Koos, Dave Morse, and Rob Glisson provided the depth that every good team needs coming off the bench. 189 B

Led by starters Bill Long, Brad Schneider, Bruce Swerdfeger, Mark Bradley and Jerry Crowell, they won the Gar- den Grove tournament, were run- ners-up in the Santa Ana tourna- ment, and won four of their first seven league games. Their leading scorers were Mark Bradley and Brad Schneider, while Bill Long led in assists. Doug Lampkin, Larry VanMatre The Sophomores, while finding it hard to keep up the superb sophomore tradition, had a fine season anyway. Third-year Coach Marly Mikkelsen possessed a team with much depth and few stars. This team balance resulted in five victories in seven league games. The team was led by the three big men, Mitch Johnson, Tony Ledesma, and David Brad- ley. Joe Sakamoto and Jeff Carl- son provided the ballhandling and outside shooting. Top row: Brad Dickey, Glenn Craycraft, Jason Scherer, Tony Ledesma. Tom Kilpatrick The Freshmen, led by Coach Dave Jones, broke out early, win- ning four of their first seven league games. The team is rich in potential, and should provide for a strong future for Pacifica bas- ketball. Leading scorer Bob Long led the freshmen, who possessed a strong defense to ab.solutely deny any easy baskets. The Freshmen can look forward to a strong Sophomore team.
