MARINERS SAIL OVER OCEANVIEW, 15-7 Powered by the running of Jeff Ross and Mike Gandeza, the Mariners came from behmd to upset Oceanview. Down 7-0, Pacifica drove down to the Seahawk 12 and scored on a Glenn Mayer field goal with 1:31 remaining in the first half. The Mariners went out in front to stay in the third quarter when Jeff Osterode hit on seven consecutive passes. Jeff Ross capped off the drive with a four yard Touchdown run. GANDEZA, MARINERS RUN BY FIGHTING LIONS Mike Gandeza rushed for 121 yards and one touchdown as the Mariners knocked off Westminster, 15-6. If Gandeza wasn ' t hurting the Lions outside, Jeff Ross and Pat Ogle took turns buttering up the middle. The Mariner defense was so dominating that Westminster wasn ' t able to score until the end of the first half, when they -.t:j;e i Oil a four play, two yard drive. The defense was led by the aggressive play of Mike Adelman, Doug Nahay and Eric Sibby. MARINERS COAST BY BOLSA, 31-7 Pacifica met an old friend from the old league and took care of them rather handedly, beating Bolsa Grande 31-7. Jeff Osterode completed 12 of 15 passes for 180 yards to lead the offense in the win. Alan Darien ran 14 yards for the first score and the rout was on. Osterode then hit Don Whitsel with a 36 yard scoring pass. Glenn Mayer kicked a 28 yard field goal. Andrew Massey then took in a 26 yard pass to set up Mike Gandeza ' s one yard touchdown. Jeff Ross put the icing on the cake with his four yard TD blast. MARINERS BEAT LOS AL, 28-0 The Mariners entered their first season in the Empire League in impressive fashion with a convincing win over Los Alamitos. Our gridmen racked up 194 yards in the first half, while the defense held the Griffins to 80, 66 on one play. Jeff Osterode hit Ed Brummett with a 28 yard TD pass to take the early lead. Mike Gandeza went three yards for the next score. Pat Ogle capped it with a one yard blast to make it 21-0 MARINERS SLIP, LOSE, 17-0 El Dorado spoiled Pacifica ' s hopes for an undefeated season with its sound 17-0 win over the Mariners. MARINERS SHUT OUT KENNEDY The Mariners got back on the right track defeating Kennedy 7-0 in this year ' s homecoming game. Jeff Osterode ended the defensive battle with his four yard touchdown run with 58 seconds left in the game. Don Whitsel had a key interception in the first half to keep the Irish off the board. The Mariners improved their record to 5-1 as well as finally getting due respect within the league. MARINERS TROUNCE KATELLA, 34-0 Jeff Osterode ' s two touchdown passes and the Mariner ' s opportunistic defense were too much for Katella as Pacifica advanced its league record to 3-1 with a 34-0 win over the Knights. Mike Gandeza and Bart Beasley were on the receiving end of Osterode ' s touchdown passes. Gandeza then broke the game open with this 25 yard sprint for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Aso scoring was Ed Brummett on a 19 yard pass from Kurt Wise and Steve Reynolds on a five yard run. MARINERS TOP LOARA, 19-7 The Mariners intercepted five Loara passes en route to a 19-7 win over the Saxons. Pacifica scored on its opening possession, relying on the strength of the offensive line to drive 72 yards before Pat Ogle took it in from seven yards out. Jeff Ross had two three yard touchdown runs. The win put the Mariners in the league ' s driver ' s seat with a 4-1 league mark going into the big showdown with Esperanza. MARINERS SCORE BIG UPSET, 37-14 Down 14-0 to the third ranked team in the county, things seemed a little hopeless. However the mighty Mariners showed how much character they had in coming back to beat Esperanza, 37-14. Ed Brummett led the comeback with an interception and a big 39 yard say hey reception to set up Kelly Bengford ' s tying touchdown. Glenn Mayer gave the Mariners the lead they never relinquished with a 35 yard field goal. Mike Gandeza then scored twice on consecutive runs of 23 and 20 yards. PACIFICA WINS TITLE! The Mariners capitalized on a Cypress turnover with a third quarter touchdown to add to their 3-0 lead to defeat the Centurions 10-0, and win the Empire League championship. Mike Gandeza ran eight yards for the touchdown with nine seconds left in the quarter. CIF ENDS EARLY, 6-0 In a tight defensive battle, the defense won the game. A Villa Park linebacker ended the Mariners season when he returned an interception for the only score of the game. 174
