MARINERS WIN EMPIRE LEAGUE TITLE I The niighly Mariner foolball Icam, led by Coach Cra- ven, faced a lough challenge ahead al the outset of the 1981 season. No longer did they compete in the Garden Grove League, which they had dominated for ten years. This year it was the Empire League, along with the likes of county powers Esperanza, Loara, El Dorado, Cypress, and Kennedy. Many predicted the Mariners to finish as low as sixth in a field of eight. But behind the exper- ienced and skilled coaching of Craven, a strong running game, and an imposing crunch bunch defense, the Mariner machine proved the experts wrong. The mariner pride shone through as the gridmen rattled off four wins straight, then finished with a 10-2 record. The only set- backs from the sparkling season were at the hands of league co-champion El Dorado, and the Villa Park Spar- tans in C.I.F. The Mariners impressive offensive performances can be attributed to the strong offensive line, led by all- leaguers John VanZanten and Rob Glisson. The line opened the holes for speedy ballcarriers Mike Gandeza and Jeff Ross, and provided super protection for quarter- back Jeff Osterode. The defense was spearheaded by lineman Walt Pederson and linebacker Mike Adelman, along with a supporting cast of Pat Ogle, Don Whitsel, and Eric Sibby, among others.
