FADS AND FASHION 1. The preppy look included pleated pants, cableknit sweaters with shin collars tucked in. lopsider shoes (without socks) and short haircuts for men This look was well groomed and clean cut. 2. Advanced technology put a big sound in a little box. Mini stereo cascttc players became popular because of their compact size. They could be conveniently hidden from teachers. Small headphones could be hidden under listener ' s hair. 3. The country was swept with pac-man fever. Pac-man and other electronic games were like slot machines for youths as well as adults, Pac-man junkies took their allowances or paychecks in quarters. 4. The prairie look, consisting of cowboy boots and calico print dresses were one of the many facets of the western look. The western look was inspired by the movie Urban Cowboy. 5. The punk movement was a strong influence on the style of the 80 s, It stessed individuality and a lack of conformity to societies ' idea of fashion. 6. The Rubik Cube presented a challenge to the young and old. This mind-boggling puzzle intrigued many minds. Several books were written on the subject offering solutions to solve the cube. The jungle look with khaki pants, camouflage, zebra, and leopard skin prints were the wildest trend. 7. Headbands were worn as an accessory to mini-skirts and knickers . 8. British styles had an influence on the punk movement in the stales. Good old 501 Levis jeans came back more popular than ever. 9. The mini-skirts of the 60 ' s had faded out in the 70 ' s, but came back again in full force in the 80 ' s. However, mini-skirts were combined with eithc leg warmers or colored tights. Mini-skirts were very seldom seen with bare legs. H ■m lO ll. springtime fashions reflected the completed this effect. 1 2, The country was in a lather over soaps. Students were rushing home from school to see Luke and Laura. the king and queen of the soap operas. General Hospi- tal was rated the number one daytime T.V. show in the country. 13, Just about everyone owned a pair of Nike tennis shoes. Sweat suits and athletic apparel became popular when the country became health conscious. 14, Taking a cue from dancers, leg warm- ers became not only practical but fashion- able.
