Old friends reunited and new faces found their way into our hearts. Freshman Orientation was held September 29th, 30th and 31st, From all over the country they gathered, settled, and made Pacific their new home. The upper classmen arrived and registration, on the 2nd and 3rd of September, officially marked the opening of the year, with hopes and promises and maybe a few dreams. Activities began with the opening of Pacific's doors as everyone began the movement of involvement. On the sunny days, many stu- dents found playing frisbee on the lawns a relaxing way of forgetting the hassles of classes. The first intramural tournament of frisbee was held on September 12th. The sororities and fraternities welcomed new brothers and sisters. A special dinner was weld in the Commons for the Bi-Cen- tennial Year and Saga held several picnics on the lawn between die dorms. Diana Krieger, Curtis Yokoo, Theresa Campbell and Sam Schaefer and others completed a 36-hour dance marathon to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. Larry Garland fx J P , 1 ' - ' A 1. Coach Hap Hingston got the bowling team started again in Septembert The girls volleyball team launched its season with two wins over University of Portland. The college radio station, KPUR, expanded their broadcasts to the Adult Student Housing. lVIany coffee houses were held in the Boxer Pause and offered good music and entertainment and good foodt, There were bake sales held in the University Center, a canoe trip, and rummage sales, to name a few activities. It was a time to rejoin yourself with the world around you and to tell everyone that you're alive. 'Qi ,Y sg Q 2 c Q ,fl A ., 1 HOMECOMING 1975 Activities for Homecoming 1975 started earlier than scheduled as the football team gathered in front of the University Center, Thursday, October 16th, for a rally to get the students psyched for the weekend. On Friday, a noise parade around the Grove led the students and royalty court to the sight of the bonfire at the Cannery field. Nominees for royalty were: Barb Dewey 84 Mike lVIcCabe, PRIDE, P.E. majors, Wendy Parker 84 lVlike Scott, Theta Nu Alpha, Theresa Campbell 84 IVlike Scott, Gamma Signa, Debbie IVIahoe 84 Jayme DePontes, Haumana O Hawaii, Gaynell Lavender 84 Carmon Cunningham, Concerned Black Students, Candy Dinges 84 Rob Slauson, Phi Lambda Omicron, Leslie Hildula 84 Dave Borges, Walter Hall, lVIonica Foyer, lVlen of lVIac. Elected King and Queen was Jeff Gonnason and Louise Akiyama ,J l 4 . 3,-. representing Omega Ephsilon PHI. The fire was lit and the cheerleaders led a few cheers to bring out the spirit. That night a dance was held in the IVIPR, sponsored by the Hawaiian Club, with the tradition of the freshman Hawaiians performing island dances during intermission. The Alumni sponsored a poster contest Saturday which was won by Option I wing of Walter Hall. The sororities held brunches that morning and in the afternoon was the big game against Whitworth. The spirit of the fans and the efforts of our team were well above what was expected although the victory went to Whitworth. Saturday night, about 300 alumni gathered in the commons for dining and dancing. Chi Coltrane put on a fantastic concert in the gym Sunday night to end the weekend of Homecoming. ,,1,,,m,W ,,,,, . xa- 5 E 1 , ANI. As the leaves changed color, the rains started and people became more involved with inside activities, such as the play THE IVIAN WHO CAIVIE TO DINNER . Marking the end of the term with finals on the 20th and 21st, many students returned home or went to various other places to visit with friends, until classes began again on October 27th. r:,J gl -mmf SEC S E WEEKS 12 as -Ask' est:--.,:l':nt.w ft L - - Q N. The football team played their last three games of the season and had their awards banquet the 25th of November. For Halloween, Andy Worhol's Frankenstein movie was shown along with a costume party on the lst of November. The Thanksgiving break was November 27th through the 30th, giving many students the opportunity to leave the campus for turkey dinner. On December 4th-6th, a basketball tip-off tournament was held to start off another good season for the Boxers. With the falling of snow and colder weather, the people of Pacific found their friendship bonds growing warmer and stronger. Different activities such as wing parties, dorm parties, concerts, Jesus Christ Superstar, and the 48th annual Wassail Party on December 9th, were held in honor of warming the Christmas spirit in everyone's hearts. The boar's head was carried by Dean Charles Trombley, Dean Willard Bleything carried the raisins and offering the wassail bowl was English professor, lVlr. lVlichael Steele. The procession was done after a pro- gram of music, dance and a touch of acting by students of Pacific University. Among those singing or playing Christmas carols and hymns were the Gospel Choir, the Hawaiian Club, Laird Thornton, Ed Schaefer and Doug lVlclVlickle and the Gamma Sigma fraternity. Those performing dances were Joan Walker, accompanied by Monte lVIcGovern, and John Neff and his dancers. The P.E . IVIajors Club put on a humorous skit and Santa Claus appeared after everyone joined in singing The First Noel and Joy to the World . All the girls and the advisor of Oak Leaf deserve many thanks for putting together a great show and keeping the Wassail Party a growing tradition over the years. 15 fx: lmiwr .ll My 41 .- -R 'Q Mp... Teachers were working on students nerves and vice-versa and the weather was getting colder and faster than the year before. Students became anxious for the two and a half weeks of Christmas break and found themselves not caring as much as they should have about their final grades. With the end of the second 7-week term also came the end of the year, 1975. New years always promise new hopes and horizons. It was no different with the students of Pacific as they began to anticipate a superior 1976. ,ig HQ, , 2 S5 al ,1 5 f u n V ' Ep ' 4 E iff 9 E A 15, ' -A 2 ,AH 'W ,. , 5 5 EY. Q . . 1, Q XE Qs -L.. These courses were instituted in the fall of 1973 as part of the dramatic shake-up of Paci-fic's en- tire curriculum. The purpose was to give students a chance to deal with a single prob- lem or topic lthis year, Survival D in a series of courses offered in a variety of de- partments. In the fall of 1975, it became time to choose another topic for these classes to deal with. Unfortunately, the Curriculum Committee, headed by Professor Marshall Lee, found a lack of interest in the suggesting and choosing of the new topic. Loath to dictate a topic to the campus , as the committee said, they recommended the dropping of the Common Inquiry topic and classes, effective June of 1976. The Senate approved the move in January, dropping CI from graduation requirements. N .. x E Q H gk T4 1 .X W 5 Q 55 9 x 5 . 'M' ym-1 X K is 5 if -fx E ,..,. 'Wi A ..., ai Q wil? Graduation requirements, meanwhile, are being cwanged to get students to take more courses in areas other than their major. In its report to the Senate suggesting the abolishment of Common Inquiry classes at Pacific, the Curriculum Committee said that Cl , in fact, had provoked little interdisciplinary inquiry -the original goal of the classes and single topics. While the official Common Inquiry program passes away quietly in 1976, the ideas of inquiry--and involvement--with a broad spectrum of subjects will live on in future generations of PU students. 21 ,Q-----,,. ...A .. .-un.-f-.,n,,., ,M ,-,, M. m....,,,..,,w ,,,,, ,H .L,..4.., .W,,,,, , ...M -......- ' ....-Y-, ......-.....H, 4 ........--- ,,g L ,L . 1, ,f ...ww.-..- .ww E 1 WK - QR, Q L 'X 'D ' 4 1. The basketball team continued to play very well, the swim team, gymnastics team and wrestling team kept the athletic's going strong. Among several activities planned was a casino night held in the IVIPR on February 13. Other activities throughout the term included an Artist Series concert, a Leona Boyd con- cert, movies, banjo and string guitar workshop, Blue Sun Lyric Theatre, a career plan- ning seminar and a dance featuring Brother and Friends. With the involvement of students with these activities, the seven week term went by swiftly and the 7-day break began to give students the rest and free time they needed at this time of the year. 4 ,Y 'WV' I l 7 1 Q uv 1 , Q 5 , 0' 'sink I, wk J' v 5 ,Q , I hz ? The decision was made to rebuild within the original walls, contracts were let, and most of the year was spent putting a new, copper roof on the historic structure - the second oldest building on campus. The involvement of alumni, community members and students was solicited throughout the year to cover the costs not covered by insurance - approximately half of the 1 .2 million to reconstruct and meet modern day fire codes. ss .gg w , X , Q , . fm at fs' ' -Y U17 ! Every year for the pass 30 years, Forest Grove holds a Northwest Barber Shop Ballad Contest. Thousands of people turn up for the contest and are inspired with the authentic Gay Nineties atmosphere that Forest Grove puts together. lVIarch 5-6 was the date of this year's contest. The theme was l am a Yankee Doodle Dandee in response to the nation's bicentennial year. A featured act was the Sun Tones from IVliami Beach, Florida, one of the best quartet in the U .S .A. Also a regular with the festivities is the parade through town and the dance girls. One of Pacific's professors, Albert Hingston and the Assistant Director of University Relations, George Horner, have been involved with this contest for years. Pacific girl students usually make up the line of dance girls. 27 x n 1 5. V -- -af W , i'1 ' 7 i 2 . The people of PRIDE also have many social activities through out the year such as ice-skating and skiing trips, guest speakers, a beer bust and a bottle drive. The question is, what to do about them? l When the problems are of a personal nature, if J-, V, and there's no one to talk to - it might be time yr to get involved with Pacific's Counseling Center. All year long, under the direction of Dr. J.D. Gill of the psychology department, trained students were on hand in their lVlac Hall base- ment office to talk things over. T T The results and anything brought up during f the sessions, of course, were kept confidential. One of the programs offered by the Counseling Center was an assertiveness training group, to bring people in touch with their feelings. In a busy world with classes, clubs, and organizations, and other activities coming down on the student, a Counseling Center is very needed. A place to go and talk. . .and people willing to help and get involved. PACIFIC MINISTRIES The official name for the Christian group on Pacific's campus is Pacific Nlinistries. This year the group consisted of about fifty members and met for Bible Study on Friday nights and Sunday mornings for a Sunday school program that met in the fireside lounge of the student center. About once a month the group held a fun social activity. Two retreats were also held during the year. The group's first retreat was at the beach and the second one at Mt. Hood. This group is a non-denominational group and the group leaders were R.J . Koepper and Don Rasson, both students at Western Con- servative Baptist Seminary. I I it Q CONCERNED BLACK STUDENTS The main purpose of Concerned Black Students is to make each black students' college career as rich, rewarding and productive as possible, to serve as an informational and experiential resolurce to students by stimulating and increasing their awareness of Black aesthetics in its tota ity. One of the activities and accomplishments C.B.S . did in 1975-76 have been the production of the Obie-Award winning play, The River Niger written by Joseph A. Walker. It was the first all-black play production to be produced in Oregon and it received enormous coverage from television and newspapers. C.B.S . donated S200 to the rebuilding funds of Marsh Hall, which were proceeds from a special performance of River Niger . In other activities, C.B.S . hosted a Super-Soul Disco Extravaganza in Pacific's Boxer Pause lounge and an elegant Christmas affair at the fabulous Hilton Hotel in Portland called A Ball of Holiday Splendor . One of the major accomplishments of C.B.S . this year has been the formulation of an Academic Counseling Service, operated in cooperation with the Study Skills Center. Other activities included a Nlt. Hood snow trip, a weekend beach retreat, and Black Cultural Week with a soul food dinner and show. Officers were: Carmon Cunningham, President, Michael Jones, V. Sheridan Whiteside CLaird Thorntonl, a radio orator and famous personality is injured at a dinner party in the home of lVlr. and lVlrs. Ernest W. Stanley lSheri Fisher and Bill Lambertl. Whiteside is confined to a wheelchair and must remain in the middle class Stanley household until he recuperates. The plot unfolds as the insulting Whiteside becomes involved in everyone else's affairs, and generally creates havoc in everyone's lives. The final play of the fall term was Thornton Wilder's Our Town , a production which happened to coincide with the death of that most honored and respected playwright. Professor Ted Sizer directed and for the first time in his years at Pacific, took a major role in the drama. A number of actors from the community added a varied and professional touch to the production. A musical and a serious play with the probability of Karl lVlalden, famous actor, contributing his talents was scheduled for the spring. if fi: i , .,7. .....,,,a,. ag., ,5 A -..., 1 1 5 a Elf' x ,V , A tu ell' X STUDENT ART EXHIBIT The display of varied works of art on campus was highlighted, unfortunate- ly, by the tragic theft of an entire set of original jewelry work by student Rick Cohen from the library in September. Cohen had spent months working on Uwe jewelry under direction of Portland jeweler, David Frank. Other displays during the year included the brilliantly reflective and highly polished sculpture of Portland artist, Bruce West, in November. Chrome plating predominated in his exhibit, varied with stainless steel and brass in some pieces. lVlany students displayed the fruits of their endeavors in the library during the year, and some works were presented in the Optometry School clinic, to involve yet another group of prospective art buffs. , .,,.., -gt.X,,..5Q.,3.f,.,,,.W..,,A,,,AH.-W Wf.-f V f f f M 9-0 nm, , i5l.? INDEX Ask most Pacific Students or staff members about their Friday activities during 1975-76, and they'll probably have one thing in common - picking up the latest issue of the Index, Pacific's own journalistic endeavor. For those involved in the production of the weekly tabloid, whether for credit or as a volunteer, it was a chance to see their words or photographs in print - possibly for the first time. Dave IVIelton was chosen to lead the staff as editor for the fall semester, who passed the role to Mike Scott for the spring editions. News on events of interest to various groups were a regular part of the Index, with a weekly feature on upcoming events from activities director Aggie Baiker. Before moving into the editor position, Scott was sports editor, and his weekly lVlicrophone column gave a roundup of various sports items. The pages of the Index didn't lack their share of controversy, however, as Colleen Faulkner, Barney Lerten, and others added their opinions on the passing Pacific scene. As with any opinion, many disagreed, but their feedback was a part of the involvement of the Pacific community with its newspaper. KPUR, the Daily Bulletin, the Heart of Oak, each have their role to play. . .but the Index was involve- ment - throughout the year. Head Residents Scott 84 Nancy Pike were con- stantly in the midst of exciting and sometimes strange happenings that are characteristics of their energetic tenants. The men of lVlac have made every effort to retain the rustic atmosphere of Pacific's oldest living quarters. Contemporary furnishings are combined with older surroundings to provide a unique and comfortable setting. Though blasting stereos and tie-dye curtains sometimes contrast the dark halls and high ceilings, each is characteristic of miriad of lifestyles that makes IVlac Hall a most interesting place. Parties and games were arranged for the residents of Walter to become involved with each other and themselves. Brightening the halls with pretty pictures and filling the rooms with life and laughter, Walter Hall has proven to be a good home to many throughout the years. Mqm '1-N.. im. Among the several places in Forest Grove, many students live in the Adult Student Housing CASHJ, College Place, Allied Apartments and many other apartment buildings, and regular homes. It is required by the school to be 21 , married, a Junior, or living with parents to live off campus. For a change of scenery and a different pace of life for those who choose it, living off campus is a pleasure. z.,,.
