The final checks and rechecks have been made, the last batch of copy has gone to the press, and now the staff room is silent and deserted. Looking back, it has been a crowded year with appointments to arrange, deadlines to meet, and copy to edit. The pages that follow are the fruit of that endeavor. As you thumb through these pages you will find yourself pictured in preparation for service, catching that broader spirit of PUC -progress and the forward look. Proudly we present to you this mid-century edition. Preserve it vvellg it is your key to the Past. How appropriately we pause a moment to survey the past and look forward to the future! From this rare vantage point, we are able to look back upon the first five decades of the twentieth century. In many areas phenomenal progress is evident, especially in science and technology. Supersonic speed in transportation, instant communication across great distances, vast spreading networks of power transmission lines, an endless variety of commercial products, astounding medical discoveries-these are symbols of our progress. In the realm of human relations, however, the picture is far from encouraging. These five decades are characterized by two great global wars and almost endemic international turmoil, by skepticism and lack of interest in things of the spirit, and by a worship of material entities. As we turn from the past and attempt to peer into the future, we see at first only the dark clouds of strife between two antagonistic world orders on this one small planet. We hear only the ominous sounds of plowshares being beaten into swords in preparation for a final titanic struggle for universal domination. But as we observe more closely, we can see in the distance the agencies of the all merciful one, silently, patiently working out the counsels of His own will, and we rest confident in the knowledge that the future of this world is in the hand of God. Nor do we fear for ourselves, for we are buoyed up by the assurance that God never leads His children otherwise than they would choose to be led if they could see the end from the beginning. With confidence in our God, we take up the task He has outlined for us. May every son and daughter of Pacific Union College in this Mid-Century Year so do His will that in the never-ending future of the hereafter we may meet as an unbroken family at the feet of the Master Teacher! . . may In conjunction with the Camera Clique, the DIOGENES LANTERN this year has sponsored a photo essay contest featuring some phase of college life. The first prize goes to Professor Ted Benedict whose work occupies the next eight pages. Rolland Kime was awarded second prize for his group- of pictures which appear on the last four pages of this section. The DIOGENES LANTERN follows the . . . Soon they begin to bear the distinct mark of that one year's acquaintance with all the extra-curricular activities. But when necessity calls they even study according to the rules of concentration. We vv0uldn't be able to get along without our sophomores, and so we take great pleasure in presenting them to you as they are-scattered in groups throughout the various depart- ments of Pacific Union College. The two stone Posts at the entrance to the college campus Will always remain a favorite landmark to PUC's alumni, for they are the boundaries for HThe College on the Mountain. Carolyn Collins, Edythe Santini, Rita Garner, and Roberta Rhymes smile happily when they remember all the fun they have had within this gate. No matter how conscientiously you try to avoid getting into mischief during your college career, sooner or later it falls your lot to stop by Dean VVoods' olhce in order to clarify chapel absences, or to arrange for student association projects. Leon Trupp, George Lechner, and Elfriede Koelling seem to be enjoying an ani- mated conversation with Mrs. Lewis. Dean VVoods, secretary. As a reminder that we are good American patriots, ever willing to serve our country's needs, the Stars and Stripes are hoisted over the Graf Hall oval early every morning. VVitl1 reverence and gratitude Ray Grant, Clarice Salsa, Virginia Byrd, Melvin Beglau, Bob Snawder, Dan Mayer. and Irma Proctor have just watched the flag descend. The gym is a place of reclusion and relief from the burdens of cramming for exams, working lab experiments. or just plain plugging to attain Loma Linda's goals. Dick Teghtmeyer, Glenn Anioroso, and Robin Smith are talking shop over some of the gymnasium equipment. Howell Mnuntain's public bus is not exactly a luxury liner, but it serves the purpose of getting both villagers and dormitory students down to St. He- lena to take care of their necessary shopping. Kenneth Vance, Rosemary VVilson, Marilyn Weis, Betty Jean Cochran, Dorothy Skadsheim, and Carol Cooper anticipate a ride to tlw Sanitarium. or to St. Helena. Grainger Hall steps form the Un- ion Square of Howell Mountain. Here Grainger-ites from all over the world assemble to discuss next pe- riod's chemistry quiz, last week's sports news, and present world con- dition. Sam Macoruber, Merritt Logan, and Norman Lane are watching Grainger traliic from the sidelines. VVhat fun it is to have a nice little chat after the lunch hour in Andre Hall lobby. Tl1at's the best way to renew old friendships and add new ones to the list. It is especially enter- taining When you are Frank Tuzzo- lino, and four charming ladies like Alice Garcia, Rebecca Settle, Lila Fong, and Leticia Diaz smile down at you. It is a good idea to go over those important lecture notes before attend- ing the 1:15 class, because the teacher just might decide to surprise you with a test. Loren Ienkins, Lilly Yanke, Lionel Abrahams, Esther Lee, and Annie Shimizu are not taking any chances. ' It is rather impressive to enter the library door and see so many heads earnestly bent over books or Written notes, trying desperately to absorb one hundred Pages of outside reading or thirty good ideas for a term Paper. Traverse Elliott, Doreen Kitto, Edythe Thorp, and Io Helen Burner wait at the counter for library assistant Mary Higa, to hand them a reference book. Pat West, Nona Calvert, Winnifred Larsen, Audrey Fuller, Jim Stump, and Phyllis Emerson must have a significant reason for Watching the postmaster so eagerly while he ex- plains to them the daily duty of sorting the outgoing afternoon mail. Mr. Battin has been Angvvin's faith- ful postmaster for twenty-six years. The sidewalk directly adjacent to the post office serves as an adequate outlook post to survey the busy hustle of campus life delineating it- self in the form of colorful scenes- scenes of students running to class and hitchhikers trying to obtain a ride into town. Herb AcMo0dy and Edell Lust have been chatting while Phyllis Griggs and Zella Morrow Pur- chase a newspaper. Sophomores You begin the quarter by standing in line at the registrarfs oflice most of the day, waiting patiently to straighten out a completely tangled program and making vows for noth- ing-less-than-two-point-average report cards. Gertrude Fukunaga, Al Mun- son, Harold Kono, and Larry Kono- wal are talking over registration prob- lems with Mrs. Esther Warner, sec- retary to the registrar. Karl Bahr, protected by his bul- xet-proof apron, proudly displays a neatly bound book to Ione Klinger, Betty Burr, and Juanita Ballard. That the bindery delivers nothing but first-class work is evidenced by the work which comes to it from all over the state. Students or village-inhabiters desir- mg ol-lice appliances and service with a smile usually turn down the steep little road leading to PUC's book store, where Mrs. C. L. Woods gra- ciously takes care of their needs. Bonita Casey, Warren Meyer, Justine Chittenden, Emmett Cramer, and Warren Dymott give their opinions on valentines and school supplies. There arc few things more satis- fying than a well-laundered, freshly- starched white shirt, say Harley Shanko and Lloyd Sunclin as Mrs. Dawn Fuln-lore, laundry superintend- ent, hands them their week's laundry. 62 How about tasting our newest mint-covered chocolates? asks Mr. John Bauer, PUC's store manager. And isn't that Virginia Grant, Heather Sprengel, and Iris May buy- ing onions for their next feed? Mrs. Donna Mainarcl, assisted by Mr. Al Williams, is in charge of the grocery COLl1'lt'3l'. The atmoslilwre of the mill is very lively. Machines are constantly buzz- ing, and the electric saws whirr away, shaping rough wood into useful ar- ticles. Pat Scott and Torn Watson watch as Mr. Fred Anderson, mill superintendent, demonstrates with a scale model how the new gym girders will be raisecl. There are always those interested in building up muscles through active work out in the open air. For them the industrial arts have a singular attraction. At the well-managed col' lege farm Le Roy Steak, Ben Becker, and Bob Hampel receive instructions for the day's routine tasks from Mr. Clarence Krohn, the farm manager. Mr. Alex Griesman, dairy superina tendent, sees to it that PUC's milk supply is ready for delivery on time each morning. PUC's modern dairy plant also manufactures ice cream and cottage chese. Rusty Huddleston, Bob Freitas, and Shinsei Hokama Watch attentively as Mr. Griesman shows them the operation of the bottling machine. Then there is always Angwiifs great civic center, the College Mer- cantile, where young and old meet at the fountain to interrupt their heavy day's schedule by drinking n malt. Delmar Mathisen happens to be overwhelmed by seven Coeds: Jean Brown and Rosella Thiele flun- iorD both serving behind the counter, Margaret Moran. Edna Leiske, Rose- mary Halburg Raylene Duncan. and Phyllis Bergman, The Addressograpli machine facili- tates the circulation of the many pub- lications printed at PUC's press. Since Pat Miyashiro, Don Lee, and Merle Harness are eager to learn what makes this machine tick, Mr. M. Ellis, Press circulation manager, takes a few minutes off to explain its main parts and functions. One of the main duties of the Engineering Department is to produce the steam for heating campus build- ings. Walter Johnston, Kiyoshi Naka- sliima, John Sipkens, Earl Black, and Clinton Walker observe Mr. Cecil Ielfries as he changes the recording disc on the combustion analyzer of No. 1 boiler. Sophomores Senior Theology major Ernie Neu- feld demonstrates to Orlando Bergolrl, Bill Forrest, and Harry Ratzlaff one of the many machines available for laboratory practice in the machina- sliop courses. Directing the cafeteria traHic and food preparation is an enormous task, but Mother Smith with her helpers :loes a commendable job. While stand- ing around those monstrous pots, which must be cleaned three times a day, Everett Saulsbury, Bob Orser, Kenneth Wical, and Charles Duggie receive last-minute instructions. When PUC-ites are famished they join the cafeteria's meal-time line, and fill their Plates with gluten steaks, potatoes, and other delicacies. Francis Akana, George Kuniyoshi, Violet Ishakawa, and Helen Iha are no exceptions to the rule, as indicated by the eager expression on their faces. 5 The College Press-Where all the Publicity on the campus is Printed promptly and efficiently, even though on innumerable occasions every year Mr. George Ieys and his crew must work overtime. Here We find Norman Spuehler, Marvin Seibel, and Russell Nelson getting a demonstration from Milford Perrin on how to operate the linotype. W B ff. fm Y' 31 A ff 1 . Windward of Oahu -Courtesy of Kodak Hawan Four years ago this summer the Hawaiian Extension Division of PUC was inaugurated on the campus of the Hawaiian Mission Academy at Honolulu. Its purpose was to afford the S.D.A. youth of the Islands an opportunity for higher study at home. In 1949 the Extension Division was oi1icia11y renamed the Hawaiian Branch, the name by which it is known today. Keeping step with the needs of Christian education in the Is1ands, HMA has moved from 1415 Makiki Street to its Iarger home at 1438 Pensacola Street. This was ei-Iected between the autumn and winter quarters. The instructiona1 p1an has been for some member of the PUC faculty to journey to the HMA campus each quarter of the regu1ar school year and teach courses in his field to the Branch students. Co11ege Bible courses are taught the Branch enro11ees during all three quarters by Prof. Joseph Marsha11, a resident of the Is1ands. During the autumn quarter Prof. Les1ie Sargent taught Enghsh and speech to the Branch studentsg the winter quarter found Prof. Joseph I3a11on there as instructor in biology and public healthy and Dr. Raymond Moore has just comp1eted the spring quarter at HMA where he taught social studies and psychology. A Mendocino Biological Field Station A hundred miles up the coast from PUC and at the mouth of the Albion river is the camp, rugged and beaten by all kinds of weather that blow in from the Pacific. This camp, directed by Prof. H. W. Clark, is a great attraction to the students who roll up their bedding and old clothes every summer and abandon the luxuries of civilization for outdoor life. This will be the fourth summer for the Field Station at Albion. Because of its location on an ocean inlet of the northern California coast, it affords a rich store of wild animal, plant, and marine life. The camp is equipped with comfortable living quarters: eleven cabins, five army tents, laboratories, a dining room, and a kitchen. There are also two large boats and several rafts. Future plans outlined for the station will include a new laboratory, new sanitation facilities, and better electrical equipment. New Impro ements County road commissioner Charles Tarnagni cuts the tape and oFFicially opens the new road which was constructed so that traH-ic might bypass the C21'l1PllS- The iirst group of cars to pass over the new road is led by Mathisenls Buick. War Surplus boilers as they arrive from Ham- mer Field, Fresno, to take the place of the equip- ment novv in use. The boilers are being set up for use at the time when the new gym will be completed. The gym groundwork, situated west of McKib- bin Hall, shows promise of the mammoth building soon to be erected. The first of the huge frames used to support the roof is raised, and as the building' progresses it will be followed by twelve more. This will give the students of PUC recreational facilities and provide a large hall for various other extra-curricular activities. The construction of the new dairy has been an item of great interest to the community as a whole. Besides playing a vital part in supplying Angwin's milk it also forms a much needed addition to the growing Agricultural Department. W i 2 ? But why does it bear this name? ln the early days of Healdsburg College, Miss Alma Baker, at the age of sixteen, be- came a student there, and re- mained until she had completed her college work. Then she was married to Edwin McKibbin, but their happiness was short- lived, for both he and their only son died and Mrs. Mcliibbin was left alone. For years she taught church school, preparing her own Bible lessons. These were afterward published and have been stand- ard texts in both the SDA. grade schools and academies. At Healdsburg was conducted the first summer school held west of the Rockies, and Mrs. McKib- bin was one of the instructors. There she remained until thc school was moved to Angwin, Where she continued teaching for many years. ln grateful re- membrance of her long term of service and the inspiration her life has been to hundreds of young people, the academy building, erected in 1941 was named McKibbin Hall. 135 WILLARD H. MEIER, A.M. Principal's Message Pacific Union College Preparatory School does much more than to prepare students for college. lt does more even than to prepare students for useful lives as good American citizens. There are many fine public high schools doing that, and for much less than the cost of Christian education. Here, students, you are forming habits which will settle your eternal destiny as well as your usefulness in this life. You have been fortified against the forces of evil so rampant in the Worldg you have been taught to meet the issues of life squarely. Forces have been set in motion that will tend to develop that strength of character demanded by the test of the hour. Facult MARJORIE CUPPS-BEAN, A.B. DORA SCHUBERT-BULLER, LEONA BURMAN, A.M. G.
