But seeing the problems of men is one step toward solving them. This year the Religion classes and courses have been geared to the young generation with the concept of Ecumenism. No longer has Religion been affiliated with the established church but as a sym- bol of closer Christian-secular world association such as that of the folk- guitar mass. Scholars such as Bama- bus Ahern, C.P. and Bernard Cocke, SJ. voices have echoed to students through tapes. Advanced religion classes have studied sex education, marriage, dating and family formation. Sophomores have studied Christian values and practices, while the Fresh- man initiated the study of Salvation History. Art classes this year were the first at Pacelli to be held everyday and credited. Besides drawing and painting, the students made various art projects throughout the year. In addition, the course included the learn- ing of several different art techniques. Mechanical drawing was offered to some geometry students this year also. Techniques Stressed in It Iifistruction The new modular schedules enabled the science classes to have longer class periods this year. As a result, chemistry lab periods were held regularly once a week. Biology and Physical Science students also benefited from lab periods though not quite as often. Science teaching techniques em- ployed this year were films, the overhead projector and trans- parencies, and experiments. Experiments Give Insight et r l y Classes Specialize 111 New Math Pacelli math department has kept up to date with all the techniques of the so recently acclaimed 'New Mllthf. Teachers realize the growing importance of mathe- matical theories to students whether col- lege bound or not. Students at Pacelli receive an excellent background in math through such courses as Algebra I and ll, Geometry, Advanced Math, and Solid Geometry. 'wg ,N Wm., NNN, 1 mwikwmxmew. The Social Studies curriculum at Pacelli includes World History, American History, Economics, and Political Sci- ence. The courses this year were geared to helping the stu- dent hetter understand the world situation today by studying the past. The history student is often aided in his studies by periodicals, films, charts, and maps, The English classes at Pacelli have always given a sound basis of study bringing in all aspects of the English language. Over a course of four year, the student is well rounded in World Literature, voca- bulary, grammar, and composition. Foreign lan- guage classes bring the student to a better under- standing of life outside the boundaries of the United States. Learning is increased through such tech- niques as tapes and records. SKALD Each year it is the responsibility of the Skald staff to compile the events and emotions of the school year. The '69-'70 staff has worked hard to present all phases of Pacelli life. A total of 33500, the highest amount ever made on the ad drive, was brought in during October. This enabled the staff to add many extra features making the 1970 Skald the biggest annual Pacelli has ever had. Q . Gregg and Martha are busy preparing ad statements at weekly meeting. GLOG' ReV'eW Events of Year Pacelli's.news publications had a new look this year with the change of the format. For the past two years, the news was published once each semester as a news magazine. The staff initiated a drive to publish the 4'Viking Log three time this year using a real newspaper format. Increased emphasis on student opinion was the goal of the staff. The Editorial staff set aside space to encourage students to write letters and editorials to the editor and to participate in student polls. zitgidgqtg 'Log' page editors are 'Easy Writersf Emlilor Corry Ferrell escorted hy Gregg Gibbs in Mardi Gras lvadout. .loan discusses articles for page one.
